From pages 8 and 9 of Tam Lin, by Pamela Dean: "Hello, Molly," said Janet. "Hi. Which of you is — oh, far out !" She lunged at the bookshelves, brought up with her nose an inch away from the book, and tilting her head sideways read her way down every spine there, nodding and exclaiming. "I hate Hermann Hesse," she said, wheeling around, "but the rest of these are my very favorites." "They're mine," said Janet, beaming at her. "So you're Janet. Can you really read Hesse?" "My best friend likes him," said Janet, "and he's very intense." "I thought he was boring," said Molly, "but never mind. What have you got in here?" She folded herself to the floor and looked expectantly at Janet. Janet . . . reached for the [box] containing the new books, the ones getting ready for college had not left her time to read. "I haven't had time to read these," Janet said. "Well, let's see," said Molly, turning the books over one by one. She had very long fingers. Till We Have Faces, All the Myriad Ways, Jack of Shadows, The Children of Llyr, More Than Human, The Daughter of Time, The Crystal Cave

Good info:
Chinaberry Catalogue. If you're looking for books for kids, this is a treasure and it's a free quarterly publication. It runs to over 100 full-size (8 1/2 x 11) pages of book reviews, carefully divided up by age levels and topics. And I mean real reviews, not just a line or two. Typically a review runs at least afull column, often with good clear photos (black and white) of the book's cover. Lots of information from the reviewers who are not professional critics, but customers about how their kids and grandkids reacted to the book in question. You can get the Chinaberry Catalogue from 2780 Via Orange Way, Suite B, Spring Valley CA 91978; the 800 number is 800-776-2242; customers not in the U.S. would call 619-670-5203.

My Book List
This page is generated from my library database, which I generated with a bar-code scanner (with some help from the Web). Yes, I really own all these books. Have I read them all? The vast majority, certainly. In this list, there are probably ten or twenty books that I don't ever intend to read. (Don't ask why I own them.) Another ten, perhaps, are books that I intend to read someday, but have never been in the right mood to pick up. And then there are recent purchases (which may not even be on this list yet). The recent-purchase pile is usually one or two books, but it can reach a height of ten or even twenty if I find a juicy new used-book store or go to a con. Then it shrinks. Any book still unread after a month, if not sooner, qualifies as "read-someday". Do I ever get rid of books? Rarely. I have a separate list of the 15 books I have sold or given away. (Please don't write and ask if you can buy books from me. The answer is generally "Sorry, no".) Do I remember what's in all of these books? Hell no. Did I enjoy these books? Mostly, yes. I don't have reviews of my collection, but I have written brief comments about the most recent acquisitions.

The search committee in charge of finding a new Dean of the Kreiger School of Arts and Sciences is on track to announce their selection by Jan. 1 of next year, said its chairman, Provost Steven Knapp. "The committee completed its first round of interviews this past Friday and will be bringing a small number of finalists to campus in the first half of December," said Knapp. "We will finish all interviews of finalists by mid-December. The interviews will all be over well in advance of Jan. 1, but we anticipate that it may take a few more weeks to finalize the appointment." The 17-member committee includes professors and administrators, as well as one graduate and one undergraduate student. The committee's make-up was "consistent with the practice Hopkins has followed for all our dean search committees in recent years," said Knapp.

The evening started off with a table-top science experiment to extract DNA from strawberries, using little more than a baggie, some test tubes, soap, alcohol, and, of course, strawberries. Redwood City science teachers Pam Keller and Deborah Wood led participants through the procedure, while eighth grade students from North Star Academy served as helpful and charming lab assistants. Next up was a lively panel discussion, moderated by KQED’s Kathryn Baron, with journalist John Merrow, Stanford University School of Education Dean Deborah Stipek, Intel executive Julie Dunkle, and Steve Westly, former State Controller and founder of the Westly Foundation. The panel explored the issues raised by the federal No Child Left Behind Act and the recently released Back to Basics study of education in California, as well as the media's treatment of education research findings.

    http://members.tripod.com/~geek_world/fantasy_interview_dyer_bennet.html
GW Talks to Pamela Dean Dyer-Bennet Pamela Dean Dyer-Bennet, author of the Secret Country books and many others, recently took the time out of her busy schedule to answer the GW fantasy interview questions! 1. How do you come up with the ideas for your stories? In other words, how do the muses work for you? I don't get ideas for plots at all often. Well, really, I don't have ideas as such come to me at all often. The only parts of a story that usually spontaneously present themselves to me in an importunate and annoying fashion are characters; and as I get to know the characters, I realize things about their worlds and their stories. I can sometimes jumpstart things when it's necessary somebody I respect has asked me for a short story, say by lifting a plot from somewhere. The short story that became the novel Juniper, Gentian, and Rosemary started when Jane Yolen asked me to write a story for a YA collection, and issued stern remarks about length. I found a very short ballad, Child #1, and just managed to stay within the length limits. This account is oversimplified, though, because that story ended up including an idea I'd had since my teens, the idea of the kids who build a time machine in the attic. Ultimately the inspiration for my books seems to be mostly other people's books and songs and poetry.
