The day itself is December 30, but this is really a terrible day to try to have a party. We managed the wedding itself, and a small party for the 10th anniversary, but every other year we've just shaken our heads. Twenty-five years, however, seems worth celebrating, so we are just waiting a little.

David took this photograph while the second copy of the manuscript of Going North was being printed. I was much too focused and flustered to think of asking for a photo, but he is always good at knowing when there should be one. I'd meant to link to it earlier, but my brain is not yet grown back.

May 26, 2000
Here we are. I have taken down from the door of my office the millennial cartoon in which a young woman asks, "Is it the future yet?" to which an older woman replies, "No, it is still the present." For today the future has arrived. It has become the present. It is irresistible. And it is beautiful. I am looking at it. It is you, 2000. It is you. Good morning to you all. Good morning, President Walsh. Trustees. Faculty. And everyone in Student Life who is here today to acknowledge and applaud the women in the Class of 2000. Good morning - and welcome - to the extended families and significant others, the grandparents, and especially the parents, of the Class of 2000 - you who have loved and encouraged these seniors-about-to-be-graduates before we even knew them. Thank you for the gift of your daughters these past four years. Thank you for trusting us with the responsibility for their education, their well-being and their transformation into the company of educated women you see before you. Thank you for coming here today, from all over the country and the world, to celebrate with them, and with us, this day of culmination and commencement. And finally, good morning, dear Seniors - radiant in the awareness of what you have learned, what you have contended with, what you have overcome, what you have accomplished these past four years. Each of your diplomas is the emblem of that learning, the struggle, and that accomplishment.

Petersgate: Day 10
August 17 After sending the same response to dozens of students, alumni and taxpayers, Central Michigan University is sending out a new response to complaints about Gary Peters.
Interim Dean Pamela Gates, who has been tasked by university President Michael Rao with handling Petersgate, is still sending the generic letters, which read:
August 15, 2007
Dear Mr. Whitney: I have been asked to respond to your concerns with regard to the appointment of Gary Peters to the Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government. I hope, as well, that you would not be surprised to learn that we also have received a number of positive comments over his appointment. The concerns about his appointment, as I have come to understand them, have to do with whether or not Mr. Peters is qualified to hold a faculty appointment at CMU; whether he ought to choose between jobs; whether it is appropriate that Michigan taxpayers pay his salary; and whether he will be able to maintain a non-partisan stance while engaged in a bi-partisan race. Let me begin by assuring you that the Political Science Department, the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the University as a whole are all committed to delivering the best teaching and learning experiences possible to all of our students.

Case Western Reserve University names dean of medical school
Interim Dean Pamela Bowes Davis, expert in cystic fibrosis research and member of the Cleveland Medical Hall of Fame, becomes permanent dean
Pamela Bowes Davis, M.D., Ph.D. Pamela Bowes Davis, M.D., Ph.D., interim dean and vice president for medical affairs and vice dean for research at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, has had the "interim" title removed and been named dean of the school, effective September 14. Davis has served as interim dean since September 2006, when former Dean Ralph I. Horwitz left to take a position at Stanford University. Davis, an internationally-renowned expert in cystic fibrosis research, has maintained multiple responsibilities at the medical school and at Rainbow Babies and Childrens' Hospital of University Hospitals Case Medical Center since her arrival in 1981. She holds the Arline H. and Curtis F. Garvin, M.D. Research Professor chair at the school of medicine and also is a professor of pediatrics, physiology and biophysics and a professor of molecular biology and microbiology. Davis also served recently as chief of the pediatric pulmonary division at Rainbow. "It's an honor to be chosen to lead Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine," Davis said. "My objective is to bring to fruition many of our current initiatives and to create new opportunities for our faculty, staff and students. We have a solid foundation on which to build."

An opening luncheon on Friday featured guest speaker Will Willimon, dean of the Chapel, followed by a plenary session with reports by DAA's departing president John A. Schwarz III '56, and Edith Sprunt Toms '62, Alumni Affairs' assistant director in charge of Alumni Admissions Advisory Committees (AAAC). Toms noted that admission to the Class of 2003 was offered to 53 percent of daughters and sons of alumni who applied. The overall admit rate was 25 percent of this year's pool of 13,846. The meeting was recessed at two o'clock so that members of the DAA board could join Duke University Retirees Outreach (DURO) for a community service project at Lakewood Elementary School. Some took part in landscaping, cleaning, and painting outside while others organized and shelved books in the library. DAA's Community Service Committee chair Page Murray '85 and board member and DURO president William J. Griffith '50 made the arrangements. On Saturday, the Reunions Committee, chaired by Ruth Wade Ross '68, praised the reunions staff for its success in the planning and consolidation of three fall reunions into one grand spring reunion. Reunions director Lisa Dilts '83 then presented a series of color slides of the gala reunion weekend.

live animal labs
*UPDATE* According to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Dean Pamela B. Davis, M.D., Ph.D., the use of dogs, cats, and ferrets in student courses has been eliminated. However, Case Western continues to use live pigs in an elective surgery course. The school has stated that it plans to eliminate the use of pigs as well, but this should and can happen before the next lab is scheduled to take place this spring. Twenty years ago, live animals were commonly used in physiology, pharmacology, and surgery classes at medical schools. A standard lab involved anesthetizing the animal, followed by injecting pharmaceuticals or practicing surgical techniques. After the class, the animal was killed. Today, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is one of only ten medical schools (out of 126) that still uses animals in these cruel and unnecessary exercises. Between January and June 2008, six live pig labs are scheduled to take place at Case Western as part of a laparoscopic surgery elective. Fortunately, most schools have eliminated live animal labs from their curricula altogether. Innovations in medical simulation technology, availability of alternatives, increased awareness of ethical concerns, and a growing acknowledgement that medical training must be human-focused have all facilitated this shift.

Action Alert: Stand up for the Constitution right here in Michigan
    By Nick , Section News
Posted on Mon Dec 03, 2007 at 11:33:10 AM EST It's not every day that an opportunity like this comes along. Right here in the State of Michigan a public institution is attempting to not only infringe on the taxpayers right to get their money's worth (something few public institutions aren't adept at) but to actually restrict an individual's Constitutional rights. By this point everyone's likely well aware of Dennis Lennox and his crusade to protect the taxpayers from Central Michigan University and their decision to grant a professorship to Gary Peters, a candidate for Congress some two-hundred odd miles away in Oakland County. Lennox has become a thorn in Peters' side and a constant migraine headache for the school administration which backs the Democrat candidate one-hundred and ten percent. They've harassed Lennox, they've threatened him with expulsion and they've questioned his mental state all because he has the audacity to follow the good professor around with a video camera when he's on public property asking legitimate and reasonable questions. Dean Pamela Gates went so far as to physically assault Lennox when he tried to serve a FOIA request for records relating to Peters.
