An Interview With Author,
Charles de Lint Interview by

Mr. de Lint's handling of ancient folklore to weave an entirely new pattern has never, to my knowledge, been equaled.
- Andre Norton -
Originally from the town of Bussum in the Netherlands, Charles de Lint immigrated to Canada four months after he was born on December 22, 1951. Though born in a time when the "fantasy" wasn't even a genre, de Lint spent most of his earlier years immersing himself into the worlds of legend and myth. This fascination led him to read authors such as Andre Norton, Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and Thomas Burnett Swann (one of his personal favorites even today). He also read retellings of old tales and their origins, looking into the heart of the mythic structure of legend. Though he wrote constantly, he never thought he would follow in the footsteps of his favorite authors. Instead, he wished to make a living as a musician. As luck would have it, de Lint would eventually make a living at doing both and the fantasy genre would be rewarded with an incredible new voice. The author of more than forty-three published books, in many ways Charles de Lint has helped to reinvent the fantasy genre. His unique tales incorporate the mundane world with myth and folklore, creating urban fantasies. No longer bound by the shackles of imaginary worlds, faeries and elves now sip coffee in cafes while forgotten gods beg for change on the street corner. Though the majority of his stories revolve around the fictional city of Newford, anyone can recognize the streets and alleyways of their hometown in the beautifully written prose.

Mulengro
by Charles de Lint Publisher: Orb October 1985 Printing: December 2003 ISBN: Format: Trade paperback Pages: This is an unusual book for Charles de Lint, as he warns in an introduction. It's a dark fantasy verging on horror, with far more graphic violence and bloodshed than the typical de Lint novel. Later books along these lines were written under an open pen name, Samuel M. Key, to provide some advance warning, since de Lint has such a distinctive style and is otherwise an excellent choice for someone looking for less violence in their fiction. Mulengro is about the modern Romany people, Gypsies, who have exchanged caravans for cars and tents for tenements but who still live in Ontario as a separate culture with its own ways. I have no idea how accurate de Lint's portrayal of Romany culture is, but as a culture for a novel, they form a useful bridge between the mundane world and the world of magic and spirits that drive the plot. They are being hunted here by one of their own, a sociopathic serial killer who is strong with magic and who can control the spirits of the dead. At the start of the book, he burns the house of Janfri, a rom who mingled with non-rom and sold albums of folk music. From there, the book follows Janfri's decision to leave his life, the police officers investigating the arson, a Gypsy woman who lives apart because of her magic and becomes the main defense and weapon against the killer, and their various friends and acquaintances.

Newford series by Charles de Lint
These fantasies by Charles de Lint are amazing, among my favorite books of all time. What a pleasure it is to first discover a favorite author after he or she has already produced a sizable body of work! I found out about this author in the highly worthwhile Fantasy/Sci-fi Book Club on Orkut E-mail me if you want an invitation to join orkut ; I'll be happy to invite anyone who asks.)
They are not like other fantasy. In particular, they are not that same-old-thing of Elven Kings or mind-controlled dragons. They take place in a modern-day city, Newford, which was apparently originally based upon Ottawa, but which includes elements of various other cities, such as Seattle's underground old city (in Newford the result of an earthquake, unlike Seattle's which resulted from filling in to raise the ground level to stop flooding), the US legal system and medical insurance. Each story begins in an entirely real situation, often involving serious themes such as homelessness and/or recovery from child abuse, but then reality takes an odd turn, and something impossible happens. Just as in traditional fairy tales, fantastic elements are not merely there to be amazing, but somehow serve a deeper meaning. The stories don't just stop, as so many do; they each end with a satisfying resolution.
The really cool thing about this series, for me, though, is the way characters previously seen in other stories keep popping up in new ones. They become much more real, as people, when seen from the viewpoint of different narrators. The whole city becomes a real place in the mind. I'm trying to read this series in order, but now I want to go back and reread the earlier ones, since events and details will mean more now that I know the other characters better.

I'd Love to Hear Charles de Lint's Thoughts, Too...
by Ron Hogan The Elegant Variation hosts an essay by Daniel A. Olivas about short stories that fall under the category of cuentos de fantasma "Novelist/short story writer Kathleen Alcalá asserts that cuentos de fantasma serve 'as a bridge between traditional storytelling and pulp fiction, incorporating elements of both.'  Alcalá identifies four elements common to these stories: (1) basis in oral tradition; (2) influence of folk religions; (3) use of vernacular forms; and (4) influence of life and culture from the United States side of the border.  She also notes that the fantasma 'has been used as a vehicle for conveying political and social truths that could be fatal if presented more baldly.'" Some examples of Olivas' cuentos include " The Plumed Serpent of Los Angeles " and " Monk ." Others can be found in his new collection, Devil Talk . Now, I would love to set up a dialogue between Olivas and Kelly Link , and since Kelly has a new collection of stories coming out this spring, maybe that's just what I'll do!
