His books for younger readers include Waifs and Strays The Blue Girl , and Circle of Cats . Though published under a "fantasy" label, Charles and Terri Windling have come up with the term "mythic fiction" to more properly describe books such as these, which fall somewhere between fantasy literature, and mainstream fiction with a magical realist bent.
Charles was born in the Netherlands (of Dutch, Spanish and Japanese heritage), then emigrated to Canada while still an infant. Due to his father's job as a surveyor, the family lived in a number of towns in Canada and spent three years in Turkey and Lebanon. Charles had originally intended to become a full-time musician; storytelling was something he did for his own pleasure. Friends encouraged him to send out his tales, and after selling a few of these and, eventually, a novel, he began to realize that writing was his true calling (although he still plays music). We're devoting this issue entirely to Charles de Lint and his writings Paul Brandon , a friend of Charles and a well-known author in his own right, has penned an appreciation of Charles which follows these short notes; Cat Eldridge offers us an interview with him; Robert Tilendis has a career retrospective regarding his writings; and various writers such as Terri Windling, OR Melling, James Hetley and so forth pay homage to him. Oh, and there are two goodies for you to hear by Charles one performed by him, another performed by a superb Celtic group! Might there be even additional offerings to tickle your fancy? See for yourself! I'm glad there's no lectern. When the folks at Green Man So as I shrug out of my heavy coat and cross to the bar, I'm already feeling a bit better. I love the Green Man pub. It's almost as if it's a room that's slipped free from Tamson House, and it knows just what you like. For me, it's the oak panelling, the low ceilings and beams (though remind me I said that in a few hours after a couple of ales. Tall, remember), the throbbing fire and the truly astonishing array of drink. This is the one place I know where I can still get my beloved Fremlins Kentish Ale and Tasmanian Pepperberry vodka. It's kind of a shame that Charles doesn't drink, although I have a sneaking suspicion that somewhere under the bar there'll be a bag mixed with his own concoction of Starbucks coffees. Probably guarded by Hamish, the resident hedgehog here. Someone's gone to a lot of effort for this evening. All the of the usual amazing artwork has been taken down and replaced with wonderful framed prints of Charles's book covers, although the one just to my right of

Charles de Lint,
Moonheart
(Tor, 1994)
Moonheart was my very first Charles de Lint book. Subsequently, I've scoured the bookstores for any and all other books by Charles de Lint. So, merely to say that I kinda liked the book is an understatement (to say the least). The book is written in the style of urban/mythic fantasy, which means that elements of fantasy are embedded into a Real World situation. In this genre (much like Terri Windling's Bordertown series), elves, faeries, and other mythical elements are mixed in with rock 'n' roll, blue jeans and other aspects of the Real World (as we know it). In this genre, it is possible that faeries, unicorns and monsters DO walk the contemporary world with us, it's just that we refuse to see them because we don't believe. In Moonheart , de Lint not only mixes elements of the European fey, he also uses the mythical elements of Native American cultures. He meticously weaves mythical elements of the European sidhe with the manitou of the Native Americans to create a wonderful storyline of love, war, self-discovery and fantasy within a very realistic tale. The author has carefully done his research, using actual mythical elements of these cultures in keeping with their legends instead of simply throwing away the legends in favor of fanstastical creativity. This research lends a breath of realism and solid believablity to Moonheart The main storyline of Moonheart revolves around the Tamson House, a residence spanning several city blocks in the heart of Ottawa, Canada. Tamson House is where Sara and her uncle, Jamie Tams, live in some seclusion from the rest of the world. Various people come, live and go into Tamson House over the years. When Sara finds a mysterious ring and ivory chip that seems to be connected to a murder, a series of events unfold revealing that Tamson House is more than the home that Sara knows and loves, and the people that she's met are more than what they appear to be including her own uncle.

Interview with Charles de Lint
Here is our complete interview with Charles de Lint. An abridged version appears in Challenging Destiny Number 9. Note: The interview was transcribed verbatim, to retain the conversational feel. CD: How did you get started writing? CDL: CD: Could you tell us your theory of writing? CDL: You have to enjoy it I meet some writers and they say, "Oh, I hate writing." And I say, "Why are you doing it? There are so many other things you could be doing. Why spend so much of your life doing something you don't like?" But they like the peripheral stuff the marketing, meeting the fans, the small amount of fame and fortune you can get from it. That's the stuff I actually don't like. I like meeting my readers, but I do and I don't like the acclaim I find it embarrassing most of the time. I would prefer to just write and stay home. CD: Could you tell us about your next book that's coming out, and the ones that you’re working on now? CDL: I’m really bad at describing my books. Journalists like to have things like “It’s The Terminator Meets the Seven Dwarfs.” And I can’t do that with my books. If I could, I probably wouldn’t write them. Half the time with my books the main story ends three quarters of the way through the book, and the rest of the book you’re just following these characters and tidying things up. I write a review column, and I have a lot of trouble sometimes coming up with a brief way of describing what the essence of a book is.

The Little Country (novel) by Charles de Lint
The novel takes place in and around Mousehole (pronounced Mouzel) in Cornwall, and at one point a character explains why Irish traditional music and sessions figure prominently in the Cornish setting. The first 32 tunes are used as chapter titles, with the rest mentioned in the text. #19, Border Spirit is by Northumbrian piper Billy Pigg (1902-1968), the favorite musician of character Janey Little, also a piper.

    About JoMA
    • JoMA is published by the Endicott Studio , an organization dedicated to literary, visual, and performance arts inspired by myth, folklore, fairy tales, and the oral storytelling tradition.
For generations, artists have drawn upon mythic and folkloric symbolism to make contemporary works addressing the issues of their time. Our mission is to honor mythic artists of the past, support mythic artists working today, and to carry this tradition into the future.
"The job of a storyteller is to speak the truth," writes the great children's book author Alan Garner. "But what we feel most deeply can't be spoken in words alone. At this level, only images connect. And here, story becomes symbol; symbol is myth. And myth is truth."
JoMA is a nonprofit webzine, supported by reader donations , and creative contributions from an international circle of mythic writers, artists, and scholars.
