Little (Grrl) Lost

Viking, September 2007
Little (Grrl) Lost germinated from the short story of the same title that first appeared in Firebirds Rising , but you don't need to go track that book down since the story appears as the first chapter in the novel. There are two entwined plotlines in the novel. One answers Elizabeth's question of what to do when you've got a lot of attitude, but you're a Little in a big world, standing only six inches tall. But being a Big, as Elizabeth's full-sized friend T.J. is, doesn't mean that everything in your life is automatically going to go any smoother. Especially when your Little is lost. Little (Grrl) Lost is a hardcover.

Charles de Lint has won a worldwide audience for his unique brand of urban fantasy, tales that charge the modern world with spirit and magic and open our eyes to the deep truths around us. His tales infuse modern urban life with ancient myths and mysteries; with dark portents and glittering dreams; with the magic of art, of friendship, and with the vibrant rhythms of music. Charles de Lint and his wife, the artist MaryAnn Harris, live in Ottawa.

It is often said that, along with Terri Windling , he established the genre of mythic fiction which falls somewhere between fantasy literature, and mainstream fiction with a magical realist bent. This is debatable, as John Crowley preceded de Lint with the novel " Little, Big ", which was published in , and won the World Fantasy Award the following year for its blending of classical fantasy with modern culture. In any case, de Lint can certainly be credited with popularizing the emerging genre, which is also known as "urban myth" or " urban fantasy ." De Lint's work has been called "fantasy for people who normally don't read fantasy." He was born in Bussum , the Netherlands , and emigrated to Canada at the age of four months. He now lives in Ottawa with his wife, artist and musician

Svaha Inside each of us is a tune, a rhyme, a phrase, an image, or something that has haunted us since our childhood, but something whose name we do not know. Perhaps it makes us laugh or cry, cringe in fear or swell with love. Reading The Little Country Morris players and other traditional musicians may be interested in the original fiddle tunes transcribed in the appendix. ^_^
Newford
The classic book to begin your Newford experience is Dreams Underfoot the best) short story collections I have ever read. What would you do if you woke up one morning and no one knew who you were? No, Trader isn't one of those stories that looks at what the world would be like if you'd never lived in it. Or, not exactly, although it does explore what we live for and how we choose to use what gifts we've been given. Max Trader wakes up one morning to discover he's in someone else's body, and he's not at all pleased. In the process of figuring out just what happened, and how to put things back the way they were, he meets some of the more unusual residents of town (I love Bones, aka Crazy Dog, the Kickaha fortune-teller in the park who may or may not be as crazy as he appears) and finds out just what's important in life. This is one of the books which draws on some of De Lint's repeating characters found in Dreams Underfoot and other stories of Newford, although they're supporting rather than starring roles in this case. While you don't need to have read those first, you might get a kick out of their presence if you've already met them.

But gossip, stories, anecdotes…everybody seems to have something to pass on when it comes to us. “What are you looking at?” we asked her one day. It took her a moment to focus on us and our question. “Where?” Zia asked, standing on her tip toes and trying to see. “There,” Chl¶e said and pointed, “in that hedge on the edge of Dartmoor.” Neither of us were ever particularly good with geography, but even we knew that at least half a continent and an ocean lay between us and Dartmoor. “Um, right,” I said. Other times she said she was watching ice melt in Greenland. Or bees swarming a new queen above a clover field somewhere in Florida. Or a tawny frogmouth sleeping in an Australian rainforest. “I,” she announced, “have an astonishingly good idea.” “We should open a store,” she said. “Selling what?” “And when it gets all filled up?” She grinned. “Then we open another. We just keeping doing it until we have an empire of stores, all across the country.” “That seems greedy. What do we need with things?”

Charles de Lint

I'm both grateful to Tolkien and almost wish he'd never been published. Grateful because, without the success of his books we wouldn't have had so many subsequent books, written by those inspired by his work, nor would so many wonderful classic novels have been brought back into print without the existence of a fantasy genre. My irritation has nothing to do with either Tolkien or his work, but rather the fact that because The Lord of the Rings was initially published as a trilogy when it came out in paperback in NA, it begat (in the minds of publishers, writers and readers) the idea that fantasy works best as a trilogy, or as a series, which has resulted in far too many bloated stories that would have been better served in one book. It also resulted in far too many imitations, which in turn spawned their own imitations, so that now the stores are filled with third and fourth generation bad Tolkien. But the man himself, and his writing: pure magic. Charles de Lint

An Interview with Charles de Lint
Fantasy author Charles de Lint has created a loyal fan base over the years on the strength of his breakthrough novel, Moonheart, and the long-running series of books and short stories written in his imaginary modern Canadian town of Newford. As one of the frontrunners in the urban fantasy or mythic fiction field, de Lint has consistently written about the conflicts and confusions that exist between the human world we all know and that of the faerie. The traditional Seelie and Unseelie courts rarely make appearances in de Lint's books, however ( Jack the Giant Killer and its sequel, Drink Down the Moon, are the most notable exceptions to this). He relies more on the folklore found in Native American, Celtic and other mythologies to permeate the Old World aspects of settings. In one of his new titles out this spring, Widdershins In the past de Lint has threaded Celtic influences through Moonheart , Cornish legends in The Little Country , and has retold a popular fairy tale with the female protagonist Jacky Rowan in Jack the Giant Killer . But he has relied heavily upon Native American myth as well. This open-mindedness when it comes to research and writing has allowed a great deal of mixing between ethnic mythologies in his titles and introduced readers to all sorts of storylines they would not commonly find together. One such key crossover occurs in

Novelist and Province columnist Peter Darbyshire keeps you up to date on all the latest book buzz. If it's literary and it's news, it's here.
Fantasy writer finds people the scariest creatures of all
In honour of Halloween, Kim Covert talked to Canadian fantasy writer Charles de Lint about what frightens him. The answer: people.
There’s no silver bullet, no warding spell or enchantment that can protect author Charles de Lint from the evil that he fears most, because it walks among us, unmasked but hidden from the world.
One of Canada’s pre-eminent fantasy authors, de Lint says it’s the randomness of the sociopath that sends chills up his spine.
"Because you never know. You just never know," says de Lint, known for novels such as Widdershins and The Onion Girl . "You could be asleep in bed, you could be walking down a street, you could be getting some groceries, and it just happens, someone just snaps."
Whereas there are ways to protect oneself from the more traditional beasties of nightmare, our inability to identify the sociopath means there’s no safe place to run and no way to protect ourselves, he says.
So what does he think on dark stormy nights when something goes bump?
