home SF book reviews Dani Zweig's Belated Reviews In July 2003, George H. Armstrong emailed me, after reading belated review #016. He wrote a letter to Dani after reading the review because he couldn't find Dani he then emailed it to me I think it interesting enough to post here (with George's permission).
Belated Reviews #16: "Lest Darkness Fall"
and L. Sprague de Camp
Is it fair to just dismiss an important author's corpus so lightly? I think so. The point of these reviews is to identify works of past decades which may be particularly worth reading. An attempt to give every author lengthy and balanced consideration would sabotage this effort. The fact remains that while there are a good number of de Camp books that I've enjoyed, the only one I'd seriously recommend to newer readers is "Lest Darkness Fall." "Lest Darkness Fall" (***+), published in 1939, is a seminal alternate-history novel. It is the story of Martin Padway, an modern archeologist who finds himself in the Rome of 535 AD. This presents him with three problems. Theshort-term problem is that of making a living. He has a bit of money (1939 being back in the days when people typically had some silver in their pockets), borrows more, and proceeds to introduce friends, Romans, and countrymen to modern amenities such as brandy and newspapers. I described the book as 'seminal', an adjective which should be used with caution. Obviously the book owes a tremendous debt to Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", in which another American finds himself a few decades away from Padway, and a bit to the north-west. By the time of de Camp's novel, time travel had been used extensively, both within the genre and in the mainstream. (For anyone interested in reading up on this, the introduction to my copy of "Portrait of Jenny" recommends the article "Space-Time in Literary Form", by Margaret Walters, in the June 1942 issue of Tomorrow magazine.)

Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy L Sprague de Camp, Nov 27, 1907 - Nov 6, 2000 L(yon) Sprague de Camp, noted science fiction and fantasy writer of the Golden Age, born in New York City on November 27, 1907, passed away on November 6, 2000 in Plano, Texas. Formerly a resident of Villanova, Pennsylvania, Sprague and his late wife Catherine called Plano, Texas their home since 1989. Catherine Crook de Camp, Sprague's wife of 60 years preceded him in death on April 9, 2000. He is survived by his sons, Lyman Sprague de Camp and Gerard Beekman de Camp; and brother Lyman Lyon de Camp. L. Sprague de Camp, who served as a Lieuteannt Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve during the Second World War, will be cremated; and his ashes, together with those of Catherine, will be laid to final rest at the Arlington National Cemetery. L. Sprague de Camp was educated during his early years in New York City. He earned his BS in Aeronautical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1930 and his MS in Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1933. Although he worked as an educator, lecturer, engineer, patent expert, and publicity writer, Sprague de Camp devoted most of the last half century to writing over 100 science fiction, and fantasy novels. His other work also includes historical novels; biographies of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard; and recognized non-fiction pieces that include "The Ancient Engineers"; "The Day of the Dinosaur"; "Great Cities of the Ancient World"; and "The Great Monkey Trial" among others.

Review: L. Sprague De Camp's Rogue Queen
L. (Lyon) Sprague De Camp, 1907- . Rogue Queen This was pretty interesting sf, but annoying as hell. Even for the early 50s. Some of the reviews on the cover of the edition I read (Bluejay Books, April 1985; ISBN 0-312-94396-2) said "An amusing parallel between theoretical communism and the beehive is shown in this fantasy of an otherworld race of oviparous humans organized in a bee-like social structure. Mr. de Camp instills a lot of subtlety in his story of their conversion to the social mores of Earthmen as the outcome of the visit of a spaceship from Earth." Hartford Courant . Subtle? I beg to differ. The Female Man The funny thing is that this story is such a satire of itself, now, that if it were written today it would be targeted as a "political correct satire." One final campy note: the illustrations of the spaceship are screamingly phallic, and the title on the spine was mistyped: Rouge Queen lq, 7/5/00

Executive summary: Lest Darkness Fall Science fiction and fantasy author L. Sprague de Camp is remembered as one of the major authors of the Golden Age of science fiction literature. Responsible for continuing the Conan the Barbarian saga begun by friend Robert E. Howard , de Camp also produced a broad rage of other fiction and non-fiction works, including biographies of both Howard and H. P. Lovecraft as well as a variety of popular science works. Many of the latter were aimed at debunking non-scientific beliefs and included such titles as The Ancient Engineers The Great Monkey Trial (1968) and Lost Continents: The Atlantis Theme in History, Science, and Literature (1970). Some of de Camp's most popular works of fiction include

BOOK: L. Sprague de Camp, "The Ragged Edge of Science"
L. Sprague de Camp: The Ragged Edge of Science . Philadelphia, PA: Owlswick Press, 1980. 0913896063. x + 244 pp. L. Sprague de Camp was primarily a science fiction author, but he also wrote several popular science books and articles. Last year I read his Citadels of Mystery , and some time before that I also read his Lost Continents : The Atlantis Theme in History, Science, and Literature . I quite enjoyed both of them, so when I noticed The Ragged Edge of Science on eBay, I didn't hesitate much before deciding to buy it and read it. This book is basically a collection of articles, on various subjects, all of which he had previously published in various magazines, mostly during the 1950s and 60s (and a few in the early 70s). Thus, I guess that some of these articles are probably fairly out-of-date by now, but on the other hand, many of them are about topics where a few decades more or less probably don't make such a big difference. The common thread is that these are skeptical takes on subjects that are often muddled by paranormal and pseudoscientific claims. Ancient civilizations The first part of the book is about various ancient civilizations, with an emphasis on the various pseudoscientific theories that have been proposed about them.

The four long novellas and one shortish novel that comprise this volume have a fairly complicated publishing history, into the full bibliographical abysses of which it is probably wisest not to venture. The first three "The Roaring Trumpet", "The Mathematics of Magic" and the novel The Castle of Iron were first published in Unknown in 1940-41; of these the first two were loosely fixed up as a single "novel" called The Compleat Enchanter (1975). The other two of the five "The Wall of Serpents" and "The Green Magician" originated over a decade later, in 1953 and 1954 respectively, and were likewise released in book form as a fixup, The Wall of Serpents (1960; vt

His most famous SF work consists primarily of planetary romances , particularly in the Krishna and Viagens settings, although neither is properly speaking a series. He was married to Catherine Crook de Camp , who is credited as co-author on several of his later books but who actually had collaborated with him on previous books without being credited. The Krishna stories in particular were good natured, light adventures with frequent humorous twists.
