Fielding Dawson ) was a beat-era author of short stories and novels, a student of the Black Mountain College Dawson was known for his stream-of-consciousness style before the term was coined. Much of his work was lax in punctuation to emphasize the immediacy of thought. Additionally, dialogue would often be used to break this up. Though conversational, much of his dialogue could often halt the metre while still staying on track. His lack of deference toward tradition in writing, other than that of the necessity to evoke humanity, often painfully raw, is what puts him in the category of many of his better-known contemporaries, such as Jack Kerouac or Allen Ginsberg Dawson was still writing up until his unexpected death in January 2002, but by then had made his name known outside of the strictly literary world. He had become a teacher, first in prisons like Sing Sing , and continuing on to work with at-risk students at Upward Bound High School in Hartwick, New York

Others have previously transcribed this data and I have noted, at the end of the document, those works to which I referred. Return to my home page It was my intent to record what the census taker wrote. It was not my purpose to correct spelling or anything I believed to be an error. I did make one exception to this general rule. The census taker used " to indicate that a box should read the same as the box directly above it. A mark sometimes called 'ditto.' I took the liberty of filling in such boxes with the proper information. This is the only way that the database can be sorted while preserving all of the data. An alpha listing, for instance, is available for viewing at this web site. Thirteen columns of information are found in the original census. For logistical reasons, I have shortened the headers of most columns. They appear on the actual census as follows: 1. Dwelling-houses numbered in the order of visitation.

After taking portraiture classes with Tanasko Milovich, Dawson enrolled at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1949, alongside Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly and Kenneth Noland, to study painting under Franz Kline and writing under Charles Olson. The College had been founded in 1933 by John Andrew Rice as an experimental community of students and teachers, defying the crippling specialisation of an industrial education. How Fielding Dawson Fielding Dawson's fiction, essays and art/literary criticism appeared in books, magazines, anthologies and newspapers in the U.S. and abroad for over thirty years. He published 23 books during his lifetime-stories, novels, memoirs and poems. His writing roots reach back to Black Mountain College in 1949, where he went to study art and stayed to write and make images. After years spent writing in New York City, he taught writing in U.S. prisons for 17 years, while also working with at-risk teenagers in alternative high schools. Fielding was chairman of the PEN Prison Writing Committee and director of the PEN Prison Writing Workshop Program. His literary archives are held by the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. American writer and painter by Wally Dobelis, reproduced with permission A prominent book editor stopped me on the street to comment, bitterly, that no one in the big press had seen fit to remark on the passing of Fielding Dawson, a local NYC resident and one of the last survivors of the literary era that is associated with Black Mountain, the Beats, and their contemporaries in other forms of art-Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Shaped Canvas-as well as early Rock.
