Lindsey Davis speaks to Ayo Onatade for Shots Ezine
Lindsey Davis was born in Birmingham and received an English Language and Literature degree at Oxford. A former civil servant, she has been writing for over fifteen years. She has always wanted to write historical novels and began her publishing career with romantic serials about the Civil War for Woman’s Realm . She is also a former Chair of the Crime Writers Association of Great Britain. Her series featuring a 40s gumshoe style character living in First Century Rome has a devoted following all over the world and has been translated into a number of different languages.
Ayo:
Who were your influences when you decided to start writing and what books influenced you as well?
Lindsey:
Well, this is a bad start, but I am going to refuse to answer this question. I was brought up to look at what makes an author distinctive, not to corral them into sets of followers. When I started writing I deliberately chose to use my own material and to write in my own style. (I shouldn’t have to say this myself but nobody else seems to understand it): the reason my books are popular is that they are specifically NOT like any others.
Ayo:
What was the very first crime novel that you read and who introduced you to the genre?

In her Marcus Didius Falco series, she covers the known world, with her gumshoe traveling to England, as well as the Roman provinces of Asia and Africa. The first five in Davis' Falco series deal with metals: silver, bronze, copper, iron, and gold.

well-informed about the empire Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Davis is the author of the Marcus Didius Falco mysteries, set in the Roman Empire in the days of Emperor Vespasian (circa AD 70). Falco is a Roman citizen; he's also a member of the lowest class, and a paid informer to boot, all of which should make him socially untouchable. He investigates stolen art, straying spouses, missing persons, and the occasional job for his occasional patron, the emperor himself. His missions take him all over Rome, and to the farthest corners of the Empire: Britain, Germany, North Africa, and the Middle East. Falco is surrounded by an excellent cast of continuing characters: his old army buddy, Petronius Longus, now an officer of the "vigiles", a sort of combined police and fire department; Helena Justina, daughter of Senator Camillus Verus, Falco's beloved; Falco's extended family, beginning with his bossy mother and his absent father; spiteful Anacrites, the chief spy; Thalia the snake dancer; and a host of others. The series is written in chronological order, each book picking up the thread of the previous, and would likely be best read that way. I did the opposite, starting with a book right in the middle and picking up the other volumes as I could find them. It worked out all right; Davis is a dab hand at conveying the important background material from the previous books without being obvious about it, and without giving anything important away.

Lindsey Davis - An Interview
by Nicholas Newman 14 September 2007
I talked with Lindsey Davis, the famous authoress, in the lounge of Rome’s Hotel Forum near the ancient Forum that plays such a vital setting for many of her Falco detective novels. Lindsey Davis is busy at work on a short story commissioned by BBC Radio 4, in a new initiative, which pairs writers with reading groups in the central England region; it will be broadcast in 2008. Then she next turns to the nineteenth novel of her highly successful historical comic detective series set in the first century AD of the Roman Empire under Emperor Vespasian. It will be set in Roman Alexandria and Lindsey comments, 'The challenge is to avoid all mention of Pharaohs!'
Falco
Davis’s Falco detective books are certainly popular, being sold throughout world, translated into many European languages and dramatised on the BBC. Her hero, Marcus Didius Falco, was voted recently by BBC listeners as the most appealing character in fiction. Davis herself has been awarded a string of honours, including the Ellis Peters Historical Dagger Award and the Sherlock Award for best comic detective. Her first Falco detective novel Silver Pigs (1989) was about a plot to overthrow the Emperor Vespasian rule (AD 69 to 79), and her eighteenth

Davis, Lindsey
- 'Saturnalia'
Hardback: 352 pages (Feb. 2007) Publisher: Century ISBN: 1846050340 This eighteenth volume in the Falco series takes the Roman holiday of Saturnalia as its backdrop. The Didius Falco family are back in Rome, following their sojourn in Greece in the last volume, and it's here that Falco operates at his best, among the various shady characters of the city. He is summoned to the palace and requested to hunt for an escaped captive who is loose in the city. The escapee is no other than Veleda, the German warrior priestess whom Falco first met in THE IRON HAND OF MARS. Then, Justinus, Falco's brother-in-law, dallied briefly with the priestess in her forest domain. Now she is loose in Rome and Falco must find her before the end of the Feast of Saturnalia. Oh, and he's supposed to work alongside the Emperor's Chief Spy - his arch-nemesis Anacrites. But then Justinus goes missing too and Falco is under even more pressure from his family to restore Justinus to his wife before he does something really stupid. The main plot cracks along in typical Falco style, with many twists and turns, and humorous situations, all set among the festival of Saturnalia, which shows many aspects similar to those of modern day Christmas - unwanted presents, hated family gatherings etc. The vigiles annual Saturnalia party is a cracker! There is also a sub-plot concerning the deaths of several vagrants in the city, giving Falco even more to handle.

Arms of Nemesis
Steven Saylor
Ballantine Books 1992 A book review by Danny Yee The Silver Pigs and Arms of Nemesis are both mystery novels set in ancient Rome. The Silver Pigs is a fast-paced political and underworld thriller whose hero is one Marcus Didius Falco, a private informer tracking down a conspiracy against Vespasian in 70 A.D. Arms of Nemesis is a more classical murder mystery set during the Spartacist revolt in 70 B.C., with Crassus as one of the main characters. Both Davis and Saylor write cleanly and engagingly but, while they have done their historical research accurately enough, neither of them really shines as a historical novelist; the setting is used more for effect than anything else, and the dialogue, plotting and characterisation could just as well be set in 20th century London. The Silver Pigs and Arms of Nemesis will appeal to devotees of detective fiction rather than lovers of historical novels. Both novels are part of an ongoing series, so there is more available for those who enjoy these. 30 June 1994

Saturnalia by Lindsey Davis
"The top ten bestseller. It is the Roman holiday of Saturnalia. The days are short, the nights are for wild parties. A general has captured a famous enemy of Rome, and brings her home to adorn his Triumph as a ritual sacrifice. The logistics go wrong; she acquires a mystery illness - then a young man is horrendously murdered and she escapes from house arrest. Marcus Didius Falco is pitted against his old rival, the Chief Spy Anacrites, in a race to find the fugitive before her presence angers the public and makes the government look stupid. Falco has other priorities, for Helena's brother Justinus has also vanished, perhaps fatefully involved once more with the great lost love of his youth. Against the riotous backdrop of the season of misrule, the search seems impossible and only Falco seems to notice that some dark agency is bringing death to the city streets..."
