May 2006 faculty, staff and community interact to educate students for life FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jill Frye East Central University In 1978 Fenton and his wife Becky moved from Ada to McAlester after he bought his first dealership, not knowing that the prime interest rate soon would climb to 18 percent. "I was too young and naive to know what a horrible time it was to go into business," he said with a chuckle. Today, Fenton owns dealerships in Ada, McAlester, Poteau, Ardmore, Oklahoma City and Stillwater in Oklahoma; and in Pampa, Waco and Dumas, Texas; and Wichita, Kan. He is in the process of buying a Hyundai dealership in Dallas. He moved his corporate headquarters a few years ago from McAlester to Oklahoma City. He has about 500 employees and a broad group of franchises, including General Motors, Ford, Lincoln-Mercury, Nissan, Honda, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. "We sell about 1,000 vehicles retail each month," he said, "half new and half used." Fenton said the Internet, with all the information it offers customers, is starting to make a significant difference in how to do business.

Youth Mentoring YOUTH MENTOR PROGRAM Documents for Printing: Scholarship Application Mentor Registration Form Several years ago, the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame recognized that involving potential future career agriculturists would be a perfect complement to the existing awards gathering. The Hall of Fame had been effective in identifying those who were truly worthy of recognition due to their monumental impact upon Florida agriculture and the state as a whole. The Hall was successfully attracting several hundred agriculturists to the banquet to share and reinforce the honor of selection for the recipients. However, if agriculture was to remain relevant for future generations, it would be important to involve the next generation of agriculturists and encourage them to consider agriculture as a viable, honorable and hugely important career option. What better way to accomplish this objective than to provide an immersion opportunity where youngsters can see the tremendous impact that single dedicated individuals can produce? What better way is there to legitimize a vocation than to have a collection of hundreds of agricultural leaders from around the state that have already chosen agriculture as a vocation and are successful in their own right? Every year, FAHF searches for the state’s treasure of agricultural youth and offers to provide them with the opportunity to glance into their future. The agricultural community donates enough support for the program to place a youngster at each of the 80-100 tables filled with agriculturists for the event. These youngsters come to the Florida State Fairgrounds early and assemble as a group, allowing time for networking with their peers. Here they are given suggestions as to how they can get the most from their evening. They also have the opportunity to meet and hear from a previous inductee of the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame. Those who have also submitted an application for a Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame scholarship learn if they are one of the ten or so selected for a $500 boost for their educational quest toward their future career.

The story of how I ended up on this trip is worth mentioning, so I'll start with that. One night a few months ago I was reading Revolution in World Missions (an amazing book) on the Spicer couch and I had this strange desire to go on a mission trip this Christmas. Ok now I know all of you LH people just went "did you actually READ the book?" I know. The whole book is about supporting native missionaries. Like I said, it was strange. Anyway, I just put the book down and asked the Lord to open a door if He really wanted me to go. The next day I emailed asking for info about a trip I had been getting emails about through the school. I got an email back from a girl saying she thought that the trip was full, but I could email another lady if I wanted to double check. I didn't. So that was that. A few weeks later I got an email from a girl that was supposed to go on the trip, asking if I was interested in going. She and her husband had some family issues come up, and she really felt like she wasn't supposed to go on the trip and had heard that I was looking for a spot. I emailed her back and got some details, and then she tells me this "they need a decision by Friday." This was Wednesday night.
