Posted: Dec 5 1995 12:21PM TITLE: The Cunning Man AUTHOR: Robertson Davies ISBN: 0670859117 It was already my plan to review this book here, simply because it is the last book I finished, and it is a significant book by one of my favorite authors. However, I learned some very sad news today: Robertson Davies died December 2, so this review will take on a somewhat valedictory tone. For me personally, the news of Davies` death is quite depressing, doubly so because now two of my three favorite non-SF writers have died within a few weeks of each other. (Kingsley Amis having died in late October.) My third favorite non-SF writer, Anthony Powell, is older than either Davies or Amis (Amis was 73, Davies 82, and I believe today is Powell`s 90th birthday. [Actually, Powell was born on 21 December 1905.]) Oh well, on to the book. Robertson Davies was a Canadian author, arguably the finest Canadian writer ever, who wrote plays and novels on generally Canadian subjects. The novels fit generally into trilogies: The Salterton Trilogy, The Deptford Trilogy

Childhood
All mothers think their children are oaks, but the world never lacks for cabbages. Children Art is wine and experience is the brandy we distill from it. Art Authors like cats because they are such quiet, lovable, wise creatures, and cats like authors for the same reasons. Authors Fanaticism is overcompensation for doubt. Fanaticism In my experience tact is usually worse than the brutalities of truth. Tact Inactivity and deprivation of all accustomed stimulus is not rest; it is a preparation for the tomb. Idleness The love of truth lies at the root of much humor. Humor The love that dare not speak its name has become the love that won't shut up.

    INTRODUCTION
A leading figure in Canadian literature and one of the first Canadian novelists to gain international recognition, Davies is best known for the three novels that comprise The Deptford Trilogy Fifth Business The Manticore (1972), and World of Wonders (1975). Typical of his fiction, these intricate narratives incorporate religious symbolism and the supernatural, underscore the mystery and wonder of life, and are infused with a Jungian sensibility that informs the individual's quest for identity. Davies was born in Thamesville, Ontario, and attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, before enrolling in Balliol College, Oxford, England. After graduating in 1938, he served with a theater troupe for two years before returning to Canada. In 1942, Davies assumed editorship of the Peterborough Examiner , a newspaper for which he also later served as vice-president and publisher. During his twenty-year tenure at the

The Lyre of Orpheus, by Robertson Davies
October 26, 2007 by Barry The Lyre of Orpheus is the final book in the Cornish Trilogy , whose first and third books are set in and around the life of students and scholars at a fictional university in Canada. Davies has an obvious affection for academics, but he also is unsparing in his portrayal of the petty jealousies and departmental feuds that seem to be a constant part of the academic life. In this concluding title in the series, music graduate student Hulda Schnakenburg is finishing her studies by completing an unfinished opera by the noted composer E.T.A. Hoffman. The story follows her struggles to find the right voice to finish the project, and Davies has an excellent sense for writing about music and musicians (see his essay collection Happy Alchemy: On the Pleasures of Music and the Theatre The Lyre of Orpheus can be read on its on, the story is even richer if you start at the beginning with The Rebel Angels Check the WRL catalog Posted in Academic fiction Barry's Picks Books Characters ... Joan Smith reviews Judith Skelton Grant's book "Robertson Davies: Man of Myth". By Joan Smith Pages 1 T here was always something theatrical about the Canadian novelist Robertson Davies, who died two weeks ago at age 82. He began acting and writing plays as a child and was one of Canada's best-known playwrights long before his novels "The Deptford Trilogy,'' "The Rebel Angels,'' "What's Bred in the Bone'' brought him international literary acclaim. But more than most celebrities, he always cut a figure , with his formal old-fashioned clothes, his courtly accent and his flowing God-the-father hair and beard out of place (despite his Canadian settings and themes) and out of time. In this fortuitously-timed biography, Judith Skelton Grant, who has made the explication of Davies her life's work, traces for the first time, in meticulous (and often tedious) detail, the origins of the Davies myth and mythos. Davies was born in the tiny Ontario village of Thamesville (the model for Deptford) and raised by his well-read and relatively arty parents in the equally provincial town of Renfrew. His father published the local newspaper. Davies was unathletic and intellectually precocious; his schoolmates were contemptuous of his physical inadequacies and suspicious of his mental gifts. Like so many artists, he grew up feeling both superior and alone.
