Audio Interview with Robertson Davies
Robertson Davies, author of Tempest-Tost, Leaven of Malice, A Mixture of Frailties, The Lyre of Orpheus , and many others, talks with Don Swaim in this 1989 interview. Davies began his career in the theater and made his way into journalism. While working as an editor, he started writing plays and eventually novels. The pair discuss journalism and writing plays. Davies explains that he does not admire journalists who write purely from their own personal experiences because they are grasping the obvious. He goes on to say that a lot of writers have the feeling of being underdogs or oppressed writers. Listen to the Robertson Davies interview with Don Swaim, 1989

45. Conversations With Robertson Davies « The Story’s Story
I’m tempted to summarize Conversations with robertson davies, a collection of interviews with the great author, but I can’t, and even if I could I’d

Conversations with Robertson Davies
Conversations with Robertson Davies , so I find his comments without a fictional scrim interesting too. One exchange particularly resonates: Robert Fulford: Books are things to be studied, judged rather than experienced. I think you once said that the heresy of the critic is that he is a judge rather than experiencer of literature.
The Deptford Trilogy The Cornish Trilogy The Cunning Man —all accomplish this goal. Cryptonomicon and Straight Man and Lord of the Rings To intersperse Elmore Leonard
Romeo and Juliet when reading it as a high school freshman. Recently I described The Bad Girl Conversations , Davies recommends reading fewer books but reading them with more depth and feeling. I hope to read with more depth and feeling, and part of the reason I write is to find both. Paul Graham explains the process well: Wow! I started the post writing about Robertson Davies, but along the way became more interested in the diversions than the original topic. And that is a good thing: one idea bumps into another, reminding me of something else, and off I go. I hope that is reading with feeling and intellect. The Elegant Variation , in discussing the maladies affecting book reporting, says Conversations I hope so. Davies wrote many reviews of varying quality, but he was also a man who knew good work when he saw it.

The examples of book production range from the fifteenth century to the present, with a particular strength in nineteenth century colour printing and publishers' bookbindings represented in the Ruari McLean Collection. The collections also include the papers of Canadian graphic designer Carl Dair. In 1981, the Library was named for the Founding Master of the College, Robertson Davies, and contains editions and translations of his writings.

48. History & Info - Daylight Saving Time Idea From Benjamin Franklin
(robertson davies, The Diary of Samuel Marchbanks, 1947, XIX, Sunday.) Sometimes people recommend a compromise, wherein clocks would be set onehalf hour
http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/c.html
Rationale and original idea The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. Countries have different change dates. Glide your cursor over the map to see how changing the clocks affects different latitudes. If you live near the equator, day and night are nearly the same length (12 hours). But elsewhere on Earth, there is much more daylight in the summer than in the winter. The closer you live to the North or South Pole, the longer the period of daylight in the summer. Thus, Daylight Saving Time (Summer Time) is usually not helpful in the tropics, and countries near the equator generally do not change their clocks. A poll conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation indicated that Americans liked Daylight Saving Time because "there is more light in the evenings / can do more in the evenings." A 1976 survey of 2.7 million citizens in New South Wales, Australia, found 68% liked daylight saving. Indeed, some say that the primary reason that Daylight Saving Time is a part of many societies is simply because people like to enjoy long summer evenings, and that reasons such as energy conservation are merely rationalizations. However, Daylight Saving Time does save energy. Studies done by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that Daylight Saving Time trims the entire country's electricity usage by a small but significant amount, about one percent each day, because less electricity is used for lighting and appliances. Similarly, in New Zealand, power companies have found that power usage decreases 3.5 percent when daylight saving starts. In the first week, peak evening consumption commonly drops around five percent.

is Comment by loricat Maria is definitely one of Davies more rounded female protagonists. Though he still does men way better, in my opinion. And Parlabane is right up there with Leisl for outrageousness, though in quite a different way. Christine, what other Davies novels have you read? Comment by azahar The Rebels Angels is brilliant. And Yerko is possibly the most hilarious character ever devised in any book, ever. His method of separating two fighting dogs had me rolling on the floor with tears in my eyes. That whole scene was genius. Comment by loricat

  • Archaeologists are rarely purchasers, Mr. Gilmartin. Scholars, you see. Not well-off.... When it comes to house-property, archaeologists rarely rise above what we call an Old World Cottage. Something half-timbered, and easily convertible to modern. Not destroying the authentic atmosphere, of course, but quaint.
