The Life and Times of Robertson Davies He was a commanding presence, a man of many styles, many masks – newspaper editor, journalist, scholar, actor, playwright, best-selling novelist and Canada’s eminent "man of letters."
Robertson Davies In his youth, Davies was interested in the creation of illusion. He loved music and was fascinated by magic, demons, angels, guardian spirits and above all, theatre. Through his fiction, Davies integrated his many interests, all the contradictions of his rough small town background and the need for something higher, more spiritual and refined. In 1940, Davies left England and returned to Canada with his new wife Brenda Mathews. He became editor of Saturday Night magazine and then editor of the Peterborough Examiner from 1941-61. Davies also wrote plays and was active in the creation and development of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival. In 1961, he began teaching at Massey College at the University of Toronto. C In 1940, newly married, Davies returned home, serving as literary editor of Saturday Night magazine for two years before embarking on a quarter-century as editor, then publisher of The Peterborough Examiner . The small-town boy with newspapering in his blood had returned to what he knew best. During these years Davies began writing humorous essays under the pseudonym Samuel Marchbanks, published a troika of novels (the Salterton trilogy) and in 1960 began teaching literature courses at U of T. A few years later, Vincent Massey came calling, searching for the perfect person to be the founding master of the college that would be his family's namesake. In 1963 Davies moved into the master's lodgings on Devonshire Place, where he would remain until 1981. What's Bred in the Bone in 1985, he secured a worldwide readership. Man of myth
Robertson Davies was this century's great magic unrealist
by Stephen Heuser Oh, Canada. In the past two months, our northern neighbor has managed to keep Quebec and lose Robertson Davies a dismal season indeed. The loss feels doubly keen, for at age 82 the grand old man of Canadian letters was still eminently productive. His most recent novel, The Cunning Man , came out last spring, and his biography, Robertson Davies: Man of Myth , by Judith Skelton Grant, was released in America by Viking just a week before his death. Although Davies had long cultivated an imposing, even antique, physical presence really, that beard! his manner was more that of a jesting grandfather. The Economist , in its obituary, ran a formal photograph of him sticking out his tongue. In his novels and essays, Davies could tilt quickly from crusty scholar to libertine rascal as in his Deptford trilogy, set chiefly in mid-20th-century Canada and Switzerland, which is packed with loving descriptions of forgotten medieval saints and also bubbles with marital infidelity, bisexual seduction, and the darker sorts of buggery. (I didn't learn the word "catamite" from reading Davies, but his account of a traveling carnival in the third Deptford novel, World of Wonders

Davies uses a variety of approaches—including comedy, satire , myth, coming-of-age fiction, allegory , and historical romance—to depict Canadian subjects. His fiction is concerned primarily with the survival of the human spirit in his characters, who quest for their own place in the world while trying not to hurt others. Born William Robertson Davies in Thamesville, Ontario, he was educated at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and at Balliol College, University of Oxford, in Oxford, England. Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Robertson Davies Biography Robertson Davies (August 28, 1913 - December 2, 1995) was a Canadian author.
Growing up, Davies was surrounded by language. His father was a newspaper man, and both his parents were voracious readers. He, in turn, read everything he could. While Davies spent his first twenty-three working years at various newspapers in small town Ontario, his first passion was for the theatre, which is where he met and married his wife, Brenda. He was a playwright and director for many years, in England and Canada.
Davies later became the Master of Massey College at the University of Toronto (1961-1981).
His greatest novel is probably Fifth Business (1970), a curious book which draws heavily on Davies's love of myth and knowledge of small-town mores. The narrator, like Davies, is of immigrant Canadian background, with a father who runs the town paper. In a book full of singular characters, the central character is a simple, mentally defective woman named Mary Dempster, who may or may not be a saint.

His The Deptford Trilogy is made up of three novels: Fifth Business The Manticore (1972) and World of Wonders (1975). My paperback copy of this omnibus has 825 pages. The same cabal of characters inhabits all three novels although the focus of each separate novel is different. Fifth Business is told in first person and narrated by Dunstan Ramsay, a Canadian boy who grows up to be a schoolteacher and a world-renowned expert on saints. The Manticore is related as dialogue between David Staunton (son of Boy Staunton, a childhood and adult friend of Dunstan Ramsay) and his Swiss Jungian psychoanalyst. World of Wonders
The Cornish Trilogy
is comprised of The Rebel Angels (1985) and The Lyre of Orpheus (1988) and the paperback comes in at an impressive 1,136 pages. As in the earlier trilogy, the same characters populate all three novels in varying degrees.

Mrs. Bridgetower has died, and used her will as a final weapon against her son and his wife. Under the terms of it, Solomon and Pearl will not inherit until they have a son; in the meantime, the income of the estate is to be spent educating a Salterton girl in Europe. Fifth Business

In this first book of Davies' trilogy, a snowball aimed at Ramsay by his childhood friend Percy Boyd Staunton hits the pregnant Mrs. Dempster. Mrs. Dempster gives birth to Paul prematurely, and Ramsay finds himself feeling guilty over Paul's condition and Mrs. Dempster's subsequent decline. Ramsay develops an obsession with the Dempsters, although he seems unable to help them. Eventually, Paul Dempster runs away. Ramsay also leaves the small Canadian...
Leaven of Malice

A false announcement of the marriage between Solomon Bridgetower and Pearl Vambrace, to take place on November 31, is inserted into the Salterton newspaper, and things get weird for the paper's editor, Pearl, and Solly. Widening spirals of confusion touch many of the characters from Tempest-Tost. This is the second book in the Salterton trilogy, and although it can stand alone, it's better read in order. ...

When Robertson Davies became Master of Massey College in the early 1960s, he was asked to find a suitable quotation to adorn the new institution's dining hall; the quotation that he chose serves as a foundation to understanding his life and works, as well as encapsulating what he hoped to achieve at the college:
Happiness is impossible, and even inconceivable, to a mind without scope, and without pause, a mind driven by craving, pleasure or fear. To be happy, you must be reasonable, or you must be tamed. You must have taken the measure of your powers, tasted the fruits of your passion, and learned your place in the world and what things in it can really serve you. To be happy you must be wise. (Santayana)
Another building, the chapel, was considered by Davies to embody the search for self-knowledge, a quest that he asserted always ran parallel to the quest for the divine.
