Henriette D. Avram, whose far-reaching work at the Library of Congress replaced ink-on-paper card catalogues and revolutionized cataloguing systems at libraries worldwide, died April 22 of cancer at Baptist Hospital in Miami. Mrs. Avram, 86, had recently moved to Florida from her home in California, Md. The practical effect of her complicated mathematical formulations was to make library collections more readily accessible to scholars and the general public. Her work greatly expanded interlibrary loan programs throughout the nation and allowed people to sit at computers and look through automated card catalogues at libraries everywhere. After working at the National Security Agency during the early years of the computer age, Mrs. Avram (pronounced AV-rum, with a short initial "a") joined the Library of Congress in 1965. With no background in library work, she was assigned to develop an automated cataloguing format where none had existed. Combining two complex fields, computer programming and intricate cataloguing practices, she and a small team completed the MARC Pilot Project for Machine Readable Cataloguing in 1968. The system quickly became the preferred format for libraries throughout the country and, ultimately, around the globe.

This is a brief discussion of Avram Davidson and, of course, of some books by Avram Davidson
A Few Words About Avram Davidson
Avram Davidson was a complicated and, by most standards, strange person. He has left us an oeuvre that is correspondingly complicated and strangeand, again like its makerwonderful and delightful.
Sadly, from the viewpoint of us readers, Davidson was, as one friendly critic put it, a butterfly, forever flitting from project to project as new ideas came to him. In consequence, he left unfinishedin some cases hardly startedseries whose missing members we can only lament. We must simply treasure what we have, for treasure it is.
Davidson wrote both science fiction and fantasy, but his distinctive voice is best heard in his better fantasy work, none of which can readily be mistaken for that of any other author. There are several elements to that Davidson voice, but perhaps the foremost is a sense of lethargy, deliberation, of time as molasses. In his lighter books, it is just a sort of drawing out, a sense that we are all hearing the tale while lounging in the shade of an old tree on a warm day; in his most somber work, it lends the tales the quality of feverdreams, deliriums in which disparate events flow together and single events fragment strangely.
Here is a sample of the lighter style:

The Novels of Avram Davidson by Rich Horton Avram Davidson is one of my favorite authors, but his reputation, with me as with most anyone, is founded on his short fiction (and, I suppose, to some extent on his exotic nonfiction, as with Adventures in Unhistory ). Davidson's strengths were a sharp moral sense, a fascination with curious minutiae, a quirky imagination, obfuscation to good effect, and a glorious sprung prose rhythm. All of these strengths, it seems to me, are better displayed at shorter lengths. His novels tended to be sloppily plotted, or to display signs of lost interest, or to simply not finish (as in the case of his several series begun but never completed). Thus I urge those who have not yet discovered Davidson to seek out the short fiction, recently collected in such places as The Avram Davidson Treasury The Investigations of Avram Davidson , and The Other Nineteenth Century . Highlights include the Engelbert Eszterhazy stories, the Jack Limekiller stories, "The Sources of the Nile", "The Slovo Stove", "What Strange Stars and Skies", "El Vilvoy de Las Islas", "Dragon Skin Drum", "Dagon", "The Lord of Central Park", and many more. But here we consider the novels. Several were written in the middle sixties, and published as paperback originals, probably for minimal advances, probably written fairly quickly. These show signs of being forced into rather pulpish and conventional plot frames, and the exuberance of the writing is sometimes muted. Still, the prose does break free at times, and Davidson's imagination remains compelling. (Incidentally, while my copies of the books are all old paperbacks, except for

    Avram Davidson's Afterlife
The great Muslim theologian, jurist and logician Abu Hamid al-Ghazali wrote a book on The Incoherence of the Philosophers, much of which was devoted to attacking the notion of causation along lines which would be followed several centuries later by David Hume. One of his examples was a demonstration (valid) that there is nothing logically impossible in a corpse happening to ``sit up and write learned volumes in a well-ordered script,'' though he allowed that such occurrences were not ``habitual.'' But habits change: nowadays it almost seems more unusual to not get at least one volume post-mortem from an author's pen or keyboard. Some, indeed, grow far more prolific once the tomb has cut off distractions, though I wouldn't want to have to vouch for the learning or even the penmanship of the late Ms. V. C. Andrews.
