Psychology [Tom Hart has generously shared with the readers of the Victorian Web the preceding materials from his ongoing project, Anti-Darwin: The Literary and Philosophical Opposition to Darwininism . He welcomes comments, which can be directed to him at tehart@aol.com.] Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles , deserves credit for his belief in the possibility of the development of species. In the preface to Back to Methuselah , George Bernard Shaw, describes Erasmus Darwin as one of the originators of evolutionary theory and quotes the following passage from the first volume of Zoonomia OED cites "unrolling" as the first meaning of "evolution." This is the meaning E. Darwin intends here. The process unrolls through the divine decree, "fiat."] For if we may compare infinities, it would seem to require a greater infinity of power to cause the causes of effects, than to cause the effects themselves. This idea is analogous to to the improving excellence observable in every part of the creation; such as in the prgressive increase of the solid or habitable parts of the earth from water; and in the progressive increase of the wisdom and happiness of its inhabitants; and is consonant to the idea of our present siutation being a state of probation, which by our exertion we may improve, and are consequently responsible for our actions. [ Zoonomia , I, 509, quoted in Shaw, II, xxi] The most obvious thing in this passage is the length of the initial sentence, which is actually several sentences joined into one. Within the great length of the first sentence Darwin first proposes that reason is inferior to generation. The reasoning being that generation produces the cause of the effect rather than the effect itself. The byproducts of generation are linked in series. First, the sedimentary rocks (limestone, chalk, marble) are described as coming from the "shells of fish." Another series of minerals is linked to vegetable decomposition. The first paragraph then ends with the exclamatory phrases cited above. "The great architect," is reminiscent of Blake's frontispiece to

Erasmus Darwin was at the center of the ideas and activities that drove the industrial revolution in the late eighteenth century out of which the scientific worldview developed. His friends and fellow members of the Lunar Society make up what Francis Klingender called "a kind of general staff for the industrial revolution" (35). The core group consisted of Darwin, Dr. William Small, Matthew Boulton, John Whitehurst, Josiah Wedgwood, James Watt, James Keir, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, and Thomas Day. In addition, as Desmond King-Hele suggests, although he rarely was in the Birmingham area, Benjamin Franklin can be thought of as a symbolic founding father of the group because of ... Erasmus Darwin
Erasmus Darwin, , grandfather of Charles Darwin , naturalist. Darwin was the most important naturalist of the eighteenth century. Trained as a physician at Cambridge and Edinburgh, Darwin became famous for his radical opinions. Later he was a member of the Birmingham Lunar Society , which included Joseph Priestley , also known for his radicalism.. There he was exposed to the work of David Hartley , whose theory of psychological association proved influential in his own work. Darwin's biological writings spelled out a theory of evolution , although his notion of the evolution of species closely anticipated not that of his grandson, but of Charles Darwin's most formidable rival, Lamarck. Basing his work not on systematic research but simple observation, and drawing on theories of materialism, he presented a simple model of evolution which was quickly superseded by the more sophisticated nineteenth-century biologists. His works include The Botanic Garden ) and Zoonomia

Charles Darwin's grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was one of the leading intellectuals of eighteenth century England, a man with a remarkable array of interests and pursuits. Erasmus Darwin was a respected physician, a well known poet, philosopher, botanist, and naturalist. As a naturalist, he formulated one of the first formal theories on evolution in Zoonomia, or, The Laws of Organic Life (1794-1796). He also presented his evolutionary ideas in verse, in particular in the posthumously published poem The Temple of Nature . Although he did not come up with natural selection, he did discuss ideas that his grandson elaborated on sixty years later, such as how life evolved from a single common ancestor, forming "one living filament". He wrestled with the question of how one species could evolve into another. Although some of his ideas on how evolution might occur are quite close to those of Lamarck , Erasmus Darwin also talked about how competition and sexual selection could cause changes in species: "The final course of this contest among males seems to be, that the strongest and most active animal should propogate the species which should thus be improved". Erasmus Darwin arrived at his conclusions through an "integrative" approach: he used his observations of domesticated animals, the behaviour of wildlife, and he integrated his vast knowledge of many different fields, such as paleontology, biogeography, systematics, embryology, and comparative anatomy. This "integrative" approach is the very foundation upon which the

Renowned English medical doctor, poet, inventor, and naturalist. In his Zoonomia and Temple of Nature, he offered a speculative theory of evolution that was widely denounced for religious and political reasons. Although these arguments did not clearly enunciate the theory of natural selection sensu stricto, they did capture basic ideas such as the unity of organic life, the efficacy of sexual selection, and the importance of heredity and the struggle of existence for the evolutionary process, while avoiding any emphasis on teleology or Lamarckian inheritance. Grandfather of Charles Darwin and Francis Galton ; Erasmus' son Robert followed him in founding a lucrative medical practice, and in turn sent Charles to study medicine at Edinburgh. However, Charles showed little interest in the family profession. Erasmus founded the highly influential Lunar Society in about 1766; it included Priestly, Watt, Wedgwood (Charles Darwin's other grandfather), and other notable English intellectuals. Career:
