Friends of Galapagos,
Long before man discovered the Galapagos Islands, their landscapes, their plant and animal life, and the seas around them were undergoing dynamic and powerful change. The islands today are much as they were millions of years ago, and only in Galapagos can we be part of, and witness, the world as it was when life began. We must be the advocates and protectors of this spectacular place. Please join with Galapagos Conservancy and its international partners to preserve these jewels of biodiversity, this living laboratory of evolution. Sincerely,
President, Galapagos Conservancy
Galapagos Conservancy (GC), formerly known as Charles Darwin Foundation, Inc., advocates for the lasting protection of the Galapagos Islands through programs of constituency building, education, and fundraising in North America. GC raises more than $2 million annually to fund the conservation work of the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) and the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS), and supports local actors in Galapagos that work in partnership with the CDF and the GNPS. Galapagos Conservancy manages $4.5 million in endowed funds to support conservation in Galapagos. In the coming years we will focus greater attention on education and socio-economic policy work related to Galapagos, while continuing the support of our core research and management efforts implemented by the CDF and the GNPS.

Charles Darwin: The Origin of Species
What examples does Darwin give of features of nature that seem like errors ("less than perfect")? As natural selection acts solely by accumulating slight, successive, favorable variations, it can produce no great or sudden modifications; it can act only by short and slow steps. (1) Hence, the canon of "Natura non facit saltum," (2) which every fresh addition to our knowledge tends to confirm, is on this theory intelligible. We can see why throughout nature the same general end is gained by an almost infinite diversity of means, for every peculiarity when once acquired is long inherited, and structures already modified in many different ways have to be adapted for the same general purpose. We can, in short, see why nature is prodigal in variety, though niggard (3) in innovation. But why this should be a law of nature if each species has been independently created no man can explain. Many other facts are, as it seems to me, explicable on this theory. How strange it is that a bird, under the form of a woodpecker, should prey on insects on the ground; that upland geese which rarely or never swim, should possess webbed feet; that a thrush-like bird should dive and feed on sub-aquatic insects; and that a petrel should have the habits and structure fitting it for the life of an auk! and so in endless other cases. But on the view of each species constantly trying to increase in member, with natural selection always ready to adapt the slowly varying descendants of each to any unoccupied or ill-occupied place in nature, these facts cease to be strange, or might even have been anticipated.

Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin transformed the way we understand the natural world with his revolutionary ideas. But why wasn’t everyone convinced? Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882). The classic English country gentleman, Darwin seems an unlikely figure to create a controversy. He had developed a radical theory that brought him into conflict with a very traditional establishment – the Anglican Church. History has vindicated him and he is now celebrated as one of the greatest and most innovative scientists who ever lived. But, Alfred Russel Wallace, who hit upon the theory at the same time, has not received similar recognition. To this day, Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection is widely accepted, and explains the distant origins and fantastic variety of life on Earth. The young naturalist Born in 1809, Darwin was fascinated by all living things from a young age. While growing up he was an avid reader of nature books and devoted his spare time to exploring the fields around his home, collecting plants and insects.

acquired trait: A phenotypic characteristic, acquired during growth and development, that is not genetically based and therefore cannot be passed on to the next generation (for example, the large muscles of a weightlifter).
adaptation: Any heritable characteristic of an organism that improves its ability to survive and reproduce in its environment. Also used to describe the process of genetic change within a population, as influenced by natural selection
adaptive landscape: A graph of the average fitness of a population in relation to the frequencies of genotypes in it. Peaks on the landscape correspond to genotypic frequencies at which the average fitness is high, valleys to genotypic frequencies at which the average fitness is low. Also called a fitness surface.
adaptive logic: A behavior has adaptive logic if it tends to increase the number of offspring that an individual contributes to the next and following generations. If such a behavior is even partly genetically determined, it will tend to become widespread in the population. Then, even if circumstances change such that it no longer provides any survival or reproductive advantage, the behavior will still tend to be exhibited unless it becomes positively disadvantageous in the new environment.

Grant (c) Wellcome Library London Although bored at times by formal schooling, the young Charles Darwin poured enormous energy into his fascination with the natural world . As a boy, tired of Greek and Latin, he did chemistry experiments in a homemade lab with his brother Erasmus. At Edinburgh University, instead of studying medicine, he wrote his first scientific papers. And at Cambridge University, where he was sent to become a clergyman, he became so devoted to botany that he took the sole botany course three times. One scientific hobby, however, stood out above all: collecting beetles . Darwin got into a heated rivalry with another Cambridge student, Charles "Beetles" Babington, over who would acquire a new species first. And when he wasn't collecting beetles, he was writing excited letters to his cousin William Darwin Fox, confessing, "It is quite absurd how interested I am getting about the science." First Scientific Paper While at Edinburgh University, Darwin was encouraged by a free-thinking professor and early evolutionist, Robert Grant
