Jewish Religions: Atheism Einstein's Atheism http://web.archive.org/web/19981202052016/http://www.california.com/~rpcman/EINSTEIN.HTM I think part of the problem of theists wanting to believe that famous scientists such as Einstein and Hawking believe in their god comes from the common quote: "God does not play dice with the Universe." To those who already wish that Einstein believed in god, Einstein's mere mention of "god" here is all the "assurancance" they need. But to truly understand what he meant when he said that, one has to dig further into Einstein's views toward god and religion. Scientists often informally use "god" to mean the laws of nature. In a (non-religious) discussion w/ another xian, I brought up this quote: "Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper."

(As this is the last week of a month, some periodicals listed here might be succeeded by newer editions by the time you read this.) Pioneer Square Gazette. Issue #3 of this occasional business-booster tabloid is still out at some drop-off spots in the neighborhood, and includes a revealing essay by Bradley Scharf about what he considers "the wrong lessons" of neighborhood growth. Among the ideas Scharf considers to be myths in need of shattering: the notion that preserving artists' lofts from condo-conversion is a good thing. (Free from the Pioneer Square Community Council, 157 Yesler Way, #410, Seattle 98104.) Voltage. There've been industrial/goth/dark music zines here over the years, but this is easily the slickest. Issue #6 has an extensive local-music section, a review of local dystopian novelist Ron Dakron

A few notes on satire
Satire's trickythe readers must feel superior to the narrator, yet the narrator must reveal his own flaws. If the narrator seems more intelligent, then it's irony. The usual satirical device is some form of "fatal blindness" to an obvious character flaw. I'd say by these standards that Huck Finn is ironical and the Bible is satirical. Roald Dahl
While he was working for the Shell Oil Company in East Africa, World War II broke out and Roald Dahl joined Britain's Royal Air Force as a pilot. Later, one of his duties for the British diplomatic corps was spying on the US government in Washington. There, he met C.S. Forester, who encouraged him to draft a story about his most exciting adventure as a pilot, later published in the Saturday Evening Post . In 1960, he began writing bedtime stories for children, the first of which was James and the Giant Peach
