Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl (September 13, 1916- November 23, 1990) was a British novelist and short story author of Norwegian descent, famous as a writer for both children and adults. Among his most popular books are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory James and the Giant Peach Matilda The Witches ... The BFG , and Kiss Kiss Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Wales, on September 13, 1916, to Norwegian parents, Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Dahl (n©e Hesselberg). He was named after the explorer Roald Amundsen, a national hero in Norway at the time. In 1920, when Roald was still only three years old, his seven-year-old sister, Astri Dahl, died from appendicitis. A few weeks later his father Harald died of pneumonia at the age of 57. Nevertheless, his mother was determined to keep the family in Britain rather than head back to Norway and live with her relatives, because of her husband's wish to have their children educated in English schools.

THE BOOKS Roald Dahl was born in Wales of Norwegian parents - the child of a second marriage. His father and elder sister died when Roald was just three. His mother was left to raise two stepchildren and her own four children. Roald was her only son. James and the Giant Peach but The Gremlins , which was published in 1943 and adapted from a script written for Disney. Dahl went on to write several film scripts, including the James Bond adventure You Only Live Twice and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang . He disliked many of the film adaptions of his own work which appeared in his lifetime. Dahl and his family moved back to England in 1960 and settled in Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire at Gipsy House. It was here, in a small hut at the bottom of the garden, that he would write most of his unforgettable books. By all accounts, the hut was a dingy little place but one that Roald

The Art of Vengeance

Collected Stories by Roald Dahl, with an introduction by Jeremy Treglown Everyman's Library, 848 pp., $30.00
and a relatively small but distinct body of prose fiction for adults: Over to You Someone Like You Kiss Kiss Selected Stories Switch Bitch (1974), and Eight Short Stories (1987). The Collected Stories , with an excellent introduction by Dahl's biographer Jeremy Treglown, is a gathering of forty-eight stories of considerable diversity, ambition, and quality, with settings ranging from Kenya to rural England, London, and New York City and narrative styles ranging from the realistic to the fabulist and surreal. Though a number of Dahl's most engaging stories, particularly in his early career, are cast in a realist mode, his reputation is that of a writer of macabre, blackly jocose tales that read, at their strongest, like artful variants of Grimm's fairy tales; Dahl is of that select society of Saki (the pen name of H.H. Munro), Evelyn Waugh, Muriel Spark, and Iris Murdoch, satiric moralists who wield the English language like a surgical instrument to flay, dissect, and expose human folly. As a female character says in the ironically titled "My Lady Love, My Dove": "I'm a nasty Though in his fiction for adults as in his books for children Dahl exhibits the flair of a natural storyteller, for whom no bizarre leap of the imagination is unlikely, he seems to have begun writing, at the urging of C.S. Forester, as a consequence of his wartime experiences in the RAF, which included crash-landing in the African desert and participating in highly dangerous air battles during the German invasion of Greece. Such early stories as "An African Story," "Only This," "Someone Like You," and "Death of an Old Old Man" draw memorably on these experiences and suggest that if Dahl had not concentrated on the short-story form and more or less abandoned realism for the showy detonations of plot made popular in his youth by Saki and O. Henry, he might have developed into a very different sort of writer altogether.

CHILDHOOD The Witches on his mother - it was his tribute to her. His father Harald was, as Roald recalled in Boy Boy SCHOOL Roald had an unhappy time at school. From the age of seven to nine, he attended Llandaff Cathedral School. His chief memories of this time, as described in Boy , are of trips to the sweet shop. The seeds of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Boy Going Solo THE FIRST CHAPTER: ROALD BEGINS TO WRITE In 1942, during his time in Washington, C S Forester, author of Captain Hornblower, took Roald to lunch. Forester was in America to publicise the British war effort and hoped Roald would describe his version of the war, which Forester would write up for the Saturday Evening Post Post James and the Giant Peach but The Gremlins , a picture book published in 1943 and adapted from a script written for Disney. Walt Disney had invited the 25 year-old Roald to Hollywood, given him the use of a car and put him up at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The story of The Gremlins focused on the mischievous spirits that, according to RAF legend, cause aircraft-engine failures. In the end, the project to make a movie version was abandoned but the book was published. Roald was never very keen on

Who is Roald Dahl?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Roald Dahl is a British author well known for writing books and stories for children and adults. He was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1916 to Norwegian parents and named for Roald Admunsen, a popular Norwegian polar explorer of the time. When Roald Dahl was four, his sister Astri and his father both passed away within the period of one month. His mother decided to remain in England, because Dahl's father had specified that the children be educated in British schools, which he firmly believed to be the best in the world. It was an unusual decision for the time, when women were not generally encouraged to strike out on their own. Roald Dahl started at Llandaff Cathedral School, and later went to a series of boarding schools , an experience he profoundly disliked. Roald Dahl often wrote about his experiences in boarding schools, detailing them at length in his autobiography Boy: Tales of Childhood (1984). After he graduated from school, Dahl went to work for the Shell Oil Company, which posted him in Africa. There he lived in relative luxury with a handful of other Shell employees in company housing until the outbreak of the war. As one of the British citizens in Dar-es-Salaam, Roald Dahl was pressed into service to round up the Germans living there at the outbreak of the war. This

Lamb to the Slaughter

by Roald Dahl (1916-1990)
Word Count: 3899
The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight-hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the sideboard behind her, two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey.  Fresh ice cubes in the Thermos bucket.
Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come him from work.
Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come.  There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did.  The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil.  Her skin -for this was her sixth month with child-had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen, and a few moments later, punctually as always, she heard the tires on the gravel outside, and the car door slamming, the footsteps passing the window, the key turning in the lock.  She laid aside her sewing, stood up, and went forward to kiss him as he came in.
“Hullo darling,” she said.
