Pierre Clostermann Pierre Clostermann was educated in Paris and then studied aeronautical engineering in France and America. He was only seventeen when he aquired his pilot's licence. In 1941 he joined the Free French Forces (341 'Alsace' Squadron) as a fighter pilot. First in Scotland but later from Biggin Hill, he flew with Mouchotte, who was his commanding officer. The following year he was transferred to the RAF. He served in Spitfire and Tempest squadrons where he flew no less than 420 operational sorties, was credited with the destruction of 33 enemy planes and was awarded the DSO and DFC and Bar in addition to French, Belgian and American decorations. After the war he went into politics; he was a strong supporter of the European Union. He flew again in the French-Algerian war in 1956-57.

Google returned its page to the default logo by 2 p.m. after contributors to Web logs criticized the timing of the decoration, which also coincides with the birthday of Dahl. The company acknowledged that it took down the decoration — known as a Google Doodle — in response to complaints raised by members of the Jewish community. " Google has decided to remove its Doodle of Roald Dahl based on user concerns," a spokeswoman for Google said in a statement.

    Roald Dahl
'The Landlady' was originally published in Roald Dahl's set of short stories 'Kiss Kiss', and contains all the ingredients of a typically Dahlesque story. Innocence is coloured with suggestion and innuendo; the cosy comfort of a warm sitting room on a winter's nights laced with the macabre. Young Billy Weaver is looking for a place to stay in the city of Bath and seems to have found the perfect spot, but is the landlady the sweet, friendly and 'slightly dotty' person she appears to be? Roald Dahl, born in Wales of Norwegian parents, was one of the most prolific writers of children's stories in the twentieth century, endearing himself to generations of children with 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'James and the Giant Peach' amongst many others. He was also a highly successful writer of short stories for adults, including 'The Landlady', all of them with a twist in the tale, most of them now collected in various volumes entitled 'Tales of the Unexpected'. Roald Dahl and the Children's Gallery
David Erskine “Roald Dahl hated museums but would have loved this,” commented Felicity Dahl on seeing the new Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery in Aylesbury. So what is the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery and how does it fit into the whole hands-on movement? The Gallery, which is part of Buckinghamshire County Museum, is unique amongst children’s museums in the way that it uses a famous author’s stories to capture the imaginations of its visitors. Roald Dahl’s much-loved characters, such as Willy Wonka, the BFG and Fantastic Mr Fox, create a magical and imaginative environment in which to learn through investigation and discovery. Aimed mainly at Key Stage 1 and 2, the interactive displays encourage children to investigate history, natural history, science and technology through practical hands-on activities relating to real museum objects. The phrase “hands-on,” however, is more strongly associated with science centres and their phenomenon-based exhibits. However, many museums and art galleries have been quietly adopting a hands-on approach to more traditional subject matter in their displays. Around the country are many excellent examples of hands-on exhibits, often low tech, that have been incorporated into perhaps more traditional displays to make them more accessible. The Dahl Gallery could be seen as one of a new breed of hybrids, a cross between a science centre and a museum, but it is much more than that and the description really does not do it justice.

R oald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Wales, the son of Norwegian immigrants. His colorful experiences as a student in English boarding schools were the inspiration for his books Boy and Danny, Champion of the World Dahl became a writer during World War II, when he recounted in a short story his adventures as a fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force. The story was bought by The Saturday Evening Post and a long, illustrious career was born. After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Dahl began writing children's stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first two novels, James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , are now considered classics and both have been made into blockbuster films. He was the winner of England's two most distinguished literary awards, the Whitbread Prize and the Children's Book Award, and seventeen of his works are perennial bestsellers. Throughout his life, Dahl took great joy in hearing from his readers. He loved nothing more than to know he was entertaining them, as well as instilling in them a love of reading and books. Dahl once said, "I know what children like." His stories are proof positive that he was right. Roald Dahl passed away on November 23, 1990.

Entertainment Biographies D Roald Dahl British writer Born: Birthplace: Llandaff, Wales One of the most popular children's book authors of all time, Dahl began his career writing adult horror stories and magazine articles, including a Saturday Evening Post series about his experiences as a World War II Royal Air Force pilot. Dahl's children's books, however, are lighthearted, often outrageous fare. His first, The Gremlins (1943), was based on a script commissioned by Walt Disney. While the first screenplay was scraped, the story was adapted for the big screen in 1984. His next children's book, James and the Giant Peach, didn't appear until 1961, and it established Dahl as a literary force. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) followed, as did the best-selling

A review by Steven H Silver
Advertisement To most adults Roald Dahl is probably best known as the author of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Actually, most adults probably best know that story from the Gene Wilder film based on Dahl's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . Those same adults might be surprised to read Dahl's original book and find out how similar and how different it is from Wilder's film version. The Roald Dahl Treasury is a fantastic book because it allows readers to discover exactly that. Moreover, it introduces the reader to the amazing worlds which flourished inside Dahl's head with excerpts, letters and essays, most of which have previously appeared, but many of which are seeing the printed page for the first time.
