Roald Dahl (1916-1990 ) British writer, famous for his ingenious short stories and macabre children's books. Dahl's taste for cruelty, rudeness to adults, and the comic grotesque fascinated young readers, but upset many adult critics. Several of Dahl's stories have been made into films, including Matilda , dir. by Danny DeVito (1996). 'Aunt Glosspan,' the boy said, ' what do ordinary people eat that we don't?'
'Animals,' she answered, tossing her head in disgust.
'You mean live animals?'
'No,' she said. 'Dead ones.'

(from 'Pig' in Kiss, Kiss Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Wales, of Norwegian parents. His father, Harald Dahl, was the joint owner of a successful ship-broking business, "Aadnesen& Dahl" with another Norwegian. Before emigrating to Wales, Harald had been a farmer near Oslo. He married a young French girl named Marie in Paris; she died after giving birth to their second child. In 1911 he married Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg. Harald died when Dahl was four years old, and three weeks later his elder sister, Astri, died from appendicitis. The family had to sell their jewellery to pay for Dahl's upkeep at a private school in Derbyshire. When Dahl was 13 he went to a public school named Repton. His years at public schools in Wales and England Dahl later described without nostalgia: "I was appalled by the fact that masters and senior boys were allowed literally to wound other boys, and sometimes quite severely. I couldn't get over it. I never got over it..."

His life - a short description Roald Dahl described his life in two books, "Boy" and "Going Solo". The first volume deals with his childhood, the second one with his life after school. His parents were from Norway, but he was born in Wales, 1916. The family used to spend the summer holidays on a little Norwegian island, swimming, fishing and going by boat. When Roald was four years old, his father died, so his mother had to organise the trip alone for herself and her six children. After school, Roald Dahl didn't go to university, but applied for a job at the Shell company, because he was sure they would send him abroad. He was sent to East Africa, where he got the adventure he wanted: great heat, crocodiles, snakes and safaries. He lived in the jungle, learned to speak Swahili and suffered from malaria. When the second World War broke out, he went to Nairobi to join the Royal Air Force. He was a fighter pilot and shot down German planes and got shot down himself. After 6 months in hospital he flew again. In 1942, he went to Washington as Assistant Air Attaché. There, he started writing short stories. In 1943, he published his first children's book "The Gremlins" with Walt Disney and in 1945 his first book of short stories appeared in the US. His marriage with the actress Patricia Neal was unhappy. None of their kids survived, his wife suffered a stroke. When she regained consciousness, she could hardly read, count and talk. But Roald managed to nurse her back to health, so that she could act again. Nevertheless, he got divorced in 1983 and married Felicity Crosland. He recieved several awards, such as the Edgar Allan Poe Award.

Creatives (201 votes) Children’s author who sold more than 50 million books. Undoubtedly the most famous Welshman of Norwegian extraction, Roald Dahl was born into a wealthy family of Cardiff ship owners. It was at the Cathedral School in Llandaff, he later recalled, that he developed a fascination with sweets that would later provide the inspiration for one of his most famous books. Success as a writer was to come much later in life. After working as an oil salesman in Tanzania, he joined the RAF in Naorobi on the outbreak on the Second World War. Badly injured when the plane he was piloting crashed in the North African desert he was sent to Washington as Air Attaché at the British Embassy. There he met C.S. Forrester- of Hornblower fame- who was working on propaganda material. He asked Dahl to jot down some notes of his wartime experiences. Impressed by the result, Forrester had the account published unedited. “Did you know you were a writer?” he asked Dahl. From that moment on, he was. Most of Roald Dahl’s early work was written for adults. Over to You, a collection of short stories, was full of bizarre and often macabre plot twists. These and other stories were later dramatised in Tales of the Unexpected, a popular television series of the ‘seventies.
