The Loud Silence of Francine Green Karen Cushman
Karen Cushman's books are always good, but some are better than others. Personally, I rate them like this (Tier One being the BEST): Tier One: Ballad of Lucy Whipple Catherine Called Birdy
Tier Two: Midwife's Apprentice
Tier Three: Matilda Bone Rodzina Don't get me wrong even the Tier Three-ers are better than average. But Lucy Whipple and Catherine Called Birdy are my definite faves. (I still think MA won the Newbery more on the merit of CCB than anything else. But I also don't remember what else was up that year. And I'm rambling. Sorry.) For the uninitiated, Karen Cushman writes juvenile historical fiction that doesn't feel like juvenile historical fiction in her best books, she immerses her reader in another time period without making the experience seem educational. Her characters are real people they aren't just there as an excuse to dole out a history lesson. It's an impressive talent. You know what? I've been sitting here, trying to describe

She won a Newbery Honor in 1995 for her first novel, Catherine, Called Birdy , and the 1996 Newbery Medal for The Midwife's Apprentice , both set in medieval England. Cushman has also written 19th-century historical fiction with books such as Rodzina and The Ballad of Lucy Whipple In her latest work, The Loud Silence of Francine Green Cushman's heroine, Francine Green, is a quiet, well-behaved eighth-grader as the 1949-50 school year opens. Events and her friendship with one brave, outspoken girl, Sophie Bowman, combine to change Francine and help her find her own voice. BookPage caught up with the author, who lives with her husband Philip on Vashon Island, Washington, to find out more about her much talked-about new novel for middle-grade readers. Born in Chicago, Cushman moved to California with her family when she was 10 years old. The inspiration for

Reading and Breathing
Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing. ~ Harper Lee ~

Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman
Catherine lives during the Middle Ages when her options about how she will live her life are not great. She is fourteen, old enough to be married, and her father seems to be chomping at the bit to get rid of her. She has no desire to be married off, and certainly not to the men her father keeps bringing to the house. She works hard to repulse anyone who shows up and is quite successful until she meets Shaggy Beard, who is as determined to marry her as she is determined not to marry him. Who will prevail in this battle of wills?

CUSHMAN, Karen. The loud silence of Francine Green. Houghton Mifflin, Clarion. 228p. bibliog. c2006.0-618-50455-9. $16.00. J * The past that Cushman (Newbery Medal winner for The Midwife's Apprentice) recreates in this work of historical fiction is much more recent than her medieval storieshere, two girlfriends attend Catholic school in Los Angeles in 1949. The narrator, Francine, is part of a solid family; she is conservative and "silent," yet her best friend is her opposite: Sophie challenges everything she hears and doesn't hesitate to speak out. Sophie lives with her father and they are friends with a screenwriter who is being investigated as a Communist, in danger of being blacklisted. Sophie organizes protests and she questions such horrors as the atom bombin fact she is an avid "Ban the Bomb" activist. When people's right to free speech is in danger, Sophie speaks out, even when she gets in big trouble at school with the nuns, who are about as politically conservative as they could possibly be. (These are not the days of the Catholic peace activists in the 1960s.) JRecommended for junior high school students. The contents are of particular interest to young adolescents and their teachers.
