FAKING IT
Jennifer Crusie

St. Martin's Press
Fiction
ISBN: 0312983824
Meet the Goodnight family, a disarming group of art forgers who have many secrets hidden beneath the surface of their schizophrenic lives. Gwenie, the mother and owner of the art gallery her husband created is fed up - her only interest is in doing acrostics. Eve, her oldest daughter, is divorced from her gay husband Andrew, who lives with her and keeps his male lover close by; their teenage daughter, Nadine, is a smart, savvy kid who rolls her eyes with each new tidal wave that splashes across the canvas of their lives. And when close brushes with catastrophe arise, Tilda, the youngest Goodnight daughter and lynchpin of the group, goes into "save the family" mode.
Tilda paints murals. She has built a business and reputation by turning walls into canvases upon which she paints "forgeries" of great art. "Matilda Goodnight stepped back from her latest mural and realized that of all the crimes she'd committed in her thirty-four years, painting the floor to ceiling reproduction of van Gogh's sunflowers on Clarissa Donnelly's dining room wall was the one that was going to send her to hell. 'I gave you a nice talent,' [God] was going to say to her on Judgment Day, 'and this is what you did with it.'" The moment that thought passes through Tilda's mind her cell phone rings and she is immediately drawn into the latest Goodnight debacle. Her niece, Nadine, sold a "Scarlet," and the world as it had been, is never to be the same again. From this point on, Jennifer Crusie's fifth novel goes into an offbeat tale about an eclectic collection of kooky characters who live their lives "faking it."

Weekend Quickie: Don't Look Down by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer
Apparently, there's at least one male reader of this blog who's been interested in my book posts. If you're thinking of picking up a romance(ish) novel that a guy might like, try this one.
    Back cover blurb:
She is a director of dog food commercials who's just been recruited to finish a four-day movie shoot. But as soon as Lucy Armstrong arrives on set, she discovers that the staff is in chaos, the make-up artist is suicidal, and the stunt director just happens to be her ex-husband. That, and the temperamental lead actor has just acquired a Green Beret who has the aggravating habit of always being right.

Author Read-Alike: Jennifer Crusie
Romantic comedy best describes Crusie's stories, and by introducing elements of mystery and suspense, she broadens her appeal. These are fast-paced, upbeat, heartwarming, humorous stories that address issues in human relationships - among lovers, families, and friends. Snappy dialog, steamy sex, and amusing dogs are all part of the package, as is the usually urban but definitely Midwestern setting and feel. To get a feel for Crusie's trademark humor and racy romance, try Welcome to Temptation
Fellow Midwestern romance writer Susan Elizabeth Phillips shares many qualities with Crusie: spunky heroines with modern values, strong but vulnerable heroes, humor in characters and situations, snappy dialog, and an emphasis on the relationships among characters. Try her first hardcover title, This Heart of Mine
Millie Criswell makes another good suggestion for Crusie readers. Criswell's books are also Midwestern in setting, humorous, and feature quirky characters. Recipes are an added draw. The Trouble With Mary is the first of her series of linked titles.

really, really wants to see her. And really, nobody says no to the cute kid, especially in a romance novel. What disappoints me even more is that previous Crusie novels have featured protagonists who fall in love incredibly fast, and I bought into those scenarios with little problem. Both Manhunting and Getting Rid of Bradley Other conflicts in this book, especially the tensions between Lucy and Daisy, were resolved in what feels like a similarly slap-dash fashion. (Be warned: Here Lie Spoilers, so highlight the area for the Supah-Secret text): The action/suspense portion of the book is a blast, and somewhat more convincing than the love story. I know nothing about the military, guns, tracking enemies or killing people, but I have a sneaking suspicion Bob Mayer does, and it shows. "Was it good for you?"

Totally Charmed
(BenBella, 2005)
I've never watched much Charmed . But I'm gonna. As a reviewer, I had a chance to see the original pilot, starring Lori Rom as Phoebe, long before the series actually aired. Then I received the new pilot, with Alyssa Milano in the role, and I enjoyed watching for differences in the way scenes were shot. But that, frankly, was as far as my interest went. Now, I want to see more. I want to decide for myself who's better, Prue (Shannen Doherty) or her replacement sister, Paige (Rose McGowan). I want to see if they really have fashion sense as bad as people say. I want to watch the transformation of cautious Piper (Holly Marie Combs) into the group's decision-making leader. I want to see romances unravelled, babies born, demons vanquished and more. Heck, I want to see three beautiful women kick some demon butt. Why? Because I read , edited by Jennifer Crusie. The book compiles a gaggle of essays on the facts, fans, flaws and fallacies of Charmed . The chapters are written by a variety of fantasy, science fiction and romance novelists, modern witches, essayists, columnists, film critics, scientists and more.

Moving On . . .
Argh Ink has a new home.
I know it's a pain when somebody shifts a blog to a new place, the RSS feeds go screwy and all the links break, I know . I'm really, really sorry.
But I did it anyway.
So Argh Ink is now here at http://www.arghink.com. All the old posts are there. Nothing's missing. Really.
The look is a little spare at the moment. We're redecorating. Again. I get bored easily. But there's a new post. A long one. With TWO pictures. Because I'm off the road and I have time again.
I'm really sorry but if you'll just change your feeds and your bookmarks and your links or whatever this one time , I'll probably never do this again. And if you don't have any feed or bookmarks or links, hey, sorry about the extra click.
Please go here.
