MY BOOK, THE MOVIE
Hollywood is a place where a man can get stabbed in the back while climbing a ladder. William Faulkner
Thursday, September 20, 2007
Bob Mayer is the New York Times bestselling author of over 35 books, both fiction and non-fiction.
Two of his more recent books and Agnes and the Hitman were written with Jennifer Crusie
Here Mayer explains how he and Crusie use the movies to aid their collaboration:
When Jenny Crusie and I co-write, we start with two characters. The hero and the heroine. Because we're 600 miles apart we have to help each other with the characters. So we end up picking actors and actresses to be the templates for our characters so the other person can visualize them. And not just the name, but the role they were in, because that means a lot too. So for , Jenny picked Lucy Lawless to play Lucy Armstrong, her heroine. I used Kurt Russell in the movie Soldier . For Agnes and the Hitman , Jenny picked Selma Blair and I used George Clooney from the movie The Peacemaker Read an excerpt from Agnes and the Hitman and an excerpt from , and learn more about the books at Jenny Crusie's website and Bob Mayer's website

Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Sunday, April 30, 2006 Don't Look Down is a collaboration between Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer , with a chick-lit cover and camouflage-patterned boards underneath. Lucy Armstrong has been brought to Georgia at the last minute to finish directing a movie. J.T. Wilder is a Green Beret who's been hired as a military advisor to one of the movie's stars. The original crew has left the movie set in droves, strange re-writes are being handed down from on high, a sniper and a one-eyed alligator lurk (separately) in the swamp, the CIA is poking its nose in, and black helicopters make prominent appearances. As do a dysfunctional but loving family unit, pop culture references, bantering, and sex. This was a fun backyard read up until the very end, which required a re-read, a nap, and then another re-read to make sense to me. Or perhaps I'm still misreading it, because it seems like (spoiler) is getting off awfully damn easy. Perhaps another nap is called for. Lucy's soundtrack is provided by Kirsty MacColl. The visual motifs are Wonder Woman (

[Book Review] CRAZY FOR YOU by Jennifer Crusie
Fiction/ Romance
Doris Dixon reviews CRAZY FOR YOU by Jennifer Crusie (St. Martin's Press, 1999)
There is something exhilarating about reading a writer at the top of his or her game. I’ve read novels that Jennifer Crusie published before and after 1999’s Crazy For You. This is my favorite. She knew what her readers wanted and gave it to them. According the dust jacket, Crusie analyzed the structure of women’s fiction for her Ph.D. dissertation in literature. This information makes me wonder about the years of study and practice that shaped Crazy for You, a tight, funny, satisfying romance. Here's a quick summary:
Quinn Mackenzie is sick of her life. Sick of teaching art to high schoolers. Sick of her boring, worrisome live-in boyfriend, Bill. He never listens. Things begin to change for the better when Quinn adopts an abandoned dog. Bill calmly orders her to get rid of it. She refuses and he takes the dog to the pound behind her back. After reclaiming her dog and dumping Bill, Quinn makes other changes. She pursues bad boy mechanic Nick, who was once married to her wild sister Zoe. Quinn longs to be wild, too. Nick is just the spark she needs, but Bill refuses to accept that his relationship with Quinn is over.

Anyone But You - Jennifer Crusie
Nina Askew is forty, divorced, and, much to her surprise, the proud mother of a depressed beagle/basset hound named Fred. She wanted a perky puppy; Fred's idea of perky is eating Oreos. Then one night, Fred brings home Alex Moore, the smart, funny, handsome doctor who lives below Nina. Alex is everything a woman could want and ten years younger than Nina. He's used to perky, silicone-enhanced bodies. Nina has discovered that gravity can be very cruel, indeed. Despite her long list of reasons why Alex is a Bad Idea, Nina discovers that she doesn't want anyone but him. Jennifer Crusie's beloved Anyone But You was originally released in 1996. HQN has re-released this classic title in hardcover this month. I fell madly in love with the book when I first read it, and was pleased to know that my memory didn't fail me. It is a rare romance that stands the test of time it is even rarer for a category romance to rise above the sheer volume of titles released every month. That so many of Jennifer Crusie's titles are remembered fondly is a testament to her skill as a writer and storyteller. But enough about me. Let's talk about the book:

Katie's Keepers
February 2004 :: Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie What do you do when the woman who has hired you and your sister to film her triumphant return to her small hometown (whose watertower has a definite phallic look going), is determined to turn that movie into a sequel of her breakout porn film? Sophie Dempsey has always yearned for the settled life. Her family history of skipping town two steps ahead of the law hasn't quite helped her with that dream. When Clea Whipple hires Sophie and her sister, Amy, to film a documentary of her return to her hometown, Sophie thinks it's a great idea to get out of town and put the breaks on a relationship she doesn't quite want. Sophie's not sure what to think of Clea's hometown, one with a watertower with definite phallic symbolism going on, and a welcome sign so rusted, the mayor, one Phineas T. Tucker, must be 80 if he's a day. Her perceptions of small town life, town boys, her family, and what's good for Sophie are all tested in a little town called Temptation.
