Crichton's Thriller State of Fear: Separating Fact from Fiction
Michael Crichton's latest book State of Fear has characters debating data (complete with graphs and footnotes) and concepts that cast doubt on the validity of global warming evidence. This doubt is echoed in the author's message at the end of the novel and in public interviews. Readers may understandably take away some misconceptions from his book. To clear up these misconceptions, we have selected some representative cases to discuss; the list below, however, is not intended to be an exhaustive list of the errors in Crichton's book.
  • Crichton argues that C02 in the atmosphere is not closely correlated with warming trends. So why is C02 blamed as a greenhouse gas? Several times Crichton notes that glaciers are expanding not retreating. Is this accurate or only part of the story? Why do we have to act now to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels?
  • Anyone can delve into the climate literature and come to a deeper understanding of global climate change evidence. Yet the literature examples Crichton picked, and the way they are presented, seem to make a case against global warming. Climate scientists agree on the most basic key points while they continue to refine such questions as the magnitude and rate of climate change. The National Academy of Sciences, The American Geophysical Union, The American Meteorological Society, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have all issued statements affirming that climate change is underway, the impacts are significant, and humans have influenced recent climate changes.

    The admirable Crichton
February 23 2003 Michael Crichton has written many a memorable thriller - but how did he survive a violent, real-life drama? By Michael Shelden Last September, Michael Crichton thought he was going to die. In the middle of the night, he woke to find himself staring at a handgun, and two masked men standing over his bed. "They told me not to move," Crichton recalls, "and I did what they said. I didn't move an inch, not with that gun pointed at my head." The men had broken into the home of one of America's richest writers. As the creator of Jurassic Park Twister and the television drama ER , Crichton has received fabulous sums from Hollywood. According to Forbes magazine, his income in the late '90s ranged between $A100 million and $200 million a year. Obviously, he was an inviting target for thieves, but how did they get past the high walls and barred windows of his home in Santa Monica, California? Didn't alarms ring and guard dogs howl? Crichton gives a sheepish smile, and shrugs. "No, I didn't have the alarm turned on. There was no special security. It isn't that kind of house."

Jason Silverman Alfred Hitchcock made evil look like Norman Bates. Michael Crichton turns it into a computer-animation company. In his 1981 film Looker , Crichton's villain is Digital Matrix, a fictional marketing and CGI firm that hires supermodels, scans them with bleeding-edge optical machinery and then murders them. The plan: to use subliminal messaging, TV commercials and time-warp pistols to subjugate anyone who buys beer, cereal, shampoo or electoral politics. Looker , out this month on DVD, is one of four paranoiac thrillers Crichton directed during a Hollywood stint in the 1970s and '80s. These movies have many of the same elements of his more famous books, Jurassic Park Sphere Disclosure and Prey The movies are filled with high-concept ideas, purple dialogue, supremely creepy moments and nifty gadgetry. They are both implausible, sometimes to the point of being ridiculous, and a few degrees too earnest. And the primary weapon for the bad guys doctors, computer programmers, robotics experts is technological know-how. Now Crichton positions himself as an authority on global warming and enters the policy-making slipstream, advising President Bush and testifying at a congressional hearing on the nuances of climate change. Though he's become the anti-Gore in the global warming debate, Crichton also has taken less controversial

Pulp Fiction The best-selling thriller State of Fear blithely dismisses the threat of global climate change as an elaborate hoax. Can novelist turned anti-global warming crusader Michael Crichton be brushed aside as easily? By Daniel Glick Michael Crichton appears a little schizophrenic these days. Most people know him as a pop culture juggernaut: author of the Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park and Prey ; creator of the television show ER ; winner of an Academy Award, an Emmy, and a Peabody; and recipient of the true gold standard of American success—a spot on People magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People” list. More recently, though, Crichton has tried on a new, more controversial persona, as a megaphone-wielding critic of global warming science.
In January Crichton took a break from a book tour for his new best-selling anti-environmental novel, State of Fear, to lecture at the American Enterprise Institute, a neoconservative Washington think tank. Towering over the lectern (he is 6 feet 8 inches tall), Crichton looked professorial in his dark suit, reading glasses perched on his nose. He began his lecture by asserting that the research supporting the theory of human-caused global warming is “shockingly flawed.” His first PowerPoint slide depicted the famous 1998 “hockey stick” study, which graphically shows that average global temperatures have risen sharply in the past 100 years. As Crichton began to assail the graph's authors and methodology, the next slide clicked on automatically. “What, is it now just going by itself—is that what it does?” Crichton wondered, fumbling with the remote control. “I guess I have to set it down carefully,” he joked. “It's sort of like nitroglycerin.”

Michael Crichton graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1969, four years after I did. The Andromeda Strain , the first novel he wrote under his own name, was published while he was still a medical student. (He had written six previous novels under pseudonyms to help pay his way through school.) Following the success of this book, and the 1971 film based on it, he opted to write popular fiction on a full-time basis, including screenplays and the TV series ER , based on his experience as a medical student in emergency rooms, rather than practice medicine (or do research). Since then he has written 17 novels, 4 non-fiction works, and directed 7 films. Publishers have translated his books into 30 languages and have sold more than 100 million copies of them. Twelve of his books have been made into movies, with Jurassic Park (1993), at $357 million, being the fifth highest-grossing film ever.

by Michael Crichton Scientists dislike negative portrayals of scientists and scientific research in the media. However, a closer examination reveals that these media images are inevitable and probably cannot be changed. Science should turn instead to practical steps to improve its image with the public. This address was recorded at the American Association for the Advancement of Science on January 25 1999, and broadcast on the Science Show on April 3, 1999 I come before you today as someone who started life with degrees in physical anthropology and medicine; who then published research on endocrinology, and papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, and even in the Proceedings of the Peabody Museum. As someone who, after this promising beginning, turned to a life of crime, and spent the rest of his life in what is euphemistically called the entertainment business. And it is from the perspective of someone who has lived in both worlds that I want to speak to you today. Scientists often complain to me that the media misunderstands their work. But I would suggest that in fact, the reality is just the opposite, and that it is science which misunderstands media. I will talk about why popular fiction about science must necessarily be sensationalistic, inaccurate, and negative. I'll explain why it is impossible for the scientific method to be accurately portrayed in film. I will explain why I think traditional concerns about media are misplaced, and I'll suggest some steps that science can take to genuinely improve its image.

    The Admirable Mr. Crichton
For me, a highlight of this last week was reading Michael Crichton’s Next (HarperCollins). So what do I think of the novel?
First, let me warn you that Next is no Jurassic Park , nor is it another Andromeda Strain . Perhaps most importantly, neither is it a State of Fear (thank goodness). But Next is certainly an interesting tale about the perils and the benefits of genetic manipulation. The novel is structured rather like a Robert Altman film, with several intersecting characters in this case trying to understand the impact of manipulating human and animal genes, with the strands all impacting each other toward a rather bleak conclusion. Replete with explanations of cutting-edge science, Next also offers doses of pathos, as characters compete to harness genetic technology to advance the human genome toward the next level. In this propulsive yarn, we find multilingual primates, such as the speaking chimp, Dave, who is only 400 genes short of being a male homo sapien ; a talking parrot named Gerard, who possesses the IQ of a human; and California scientists rushing to patent fragments of human genomes with which they hope to cure diseases and advance human evolution. Crichton’s characters weave in and out of his plot, emphasizing that caution must be exercised when embracing this technology. One of the scientists, for instance, thinks he may have discovered a genetic cure for drug addictiononly to realize that his genetic spray has a serious dark side.
