History The Annual Symposium on Sports Medicine began as a combined effort of The Department of Athletic Medicine at the University of Texas at Austin and the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. The first meeting, held in April of 1972, was an avant-garde in the field of Sports Medicine education for physicians and athletic trainers. Unique in providing educational presentations for all members of the athletic medicine team; team physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, nurses, and physical therapists, this symposium continues to serve all groups today. In a visionary move, Coach Darrel Royal, Head Football Coach of the University of Texas , presented his belief that athletes required special medical care (probably due to the influence of legendary UT trainer Frank Medina University of Texas at Austin, was appointed Coordinator of the Athletic Medicine Program for intercollegiate athletics. Reviewed by Dennis Schwartz This film is a record of their music and good vibes and warmth and friendship and creative spirit they shared when they played together during those five years they were reunited. It includes footage from their initial reunion in the Sweetwater concert at Mill Valley, California, where they played along with bass player Jim Kerwin and percussionist Joe Craven. Garcia appears to be a creative person without pretensions. His love for many of the American musical idioms and in particular bluegrass music, shows that he was a more serious student of music than many might have thought. The film is broken up into as many as 10 titled historical/musical chapters, as it traces their friendship and musical kinship through their folk music roots by using photos, live recordings, home videos, concert footage, interviews with them about their personal recollections, and it also conducts interviews with their family and friends and associates.

[ Check our Events Calendar to see who will be reading this month. ] Since 1994, The Booksmith began offering free author trading cards of the writers who appear at our store. Modeled after baseball cards, Booksmith trading cards are designed to promote store events. On the front is a picture of the author. On the back are the "stats" - pertinent information about the writer and their book as well as the time and date of their appearance. A display at the front counter of The Booksmith showcases each month's cards. To date, more than 500 different cards have been issued since we began the series. (Click here for an illustrated, up-to-date list of cards Booksmith author trading cards have proven popular with customers and authors. Some customers carry them as a reminder of an event, while others have begun to collect the cards. One leading novelist (a Pulitzer-Prize winner who collects trading cards) requested an event at our store so he could become a Booksmith card !
