An 1883 scholarly article by Edmund Gosse, originally printed in Seventeenth Century Studies.

Richard Crashaw
Critic: Edmund Gosse Source: Seventeenth Century Studies , 1883. Reprint by William Heinemann, 1913, pp. 157-90. Reprinted in Literature Criticism from 1400 to 1800 , Vol. 24 Criticism about: Richard Crashaw (c. 1612?-1649)
[A distinguished nineteenth-century English literary historian, critic, and biographer, Gosse wrote extensively on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English literature. In the following excerpt, Gosse decries Crashaw's use of "every extravagant and inappropriate image" in his poetry. Still, he maintains that Crashaw's "Hymn to St. Teresa" and other poems exhibit a fresh and true genius in style, wording, and theme.] Crashaw's English poems were first published in 1646, soon after his arrival in Paris. He was at that time in his thirty-fourth year, and the volume contains his best and most mature as well as his crudest pieces. It is, indeed, a collection of juvenile and manly verses thrown together with scarcely a hint of arrangement, the uncriticised labour of fifteen years. The title is Steps to the Temple, Sacred Poems, with other delights of the Muses

A Hymn of the Nativity, Sung By the Shepherds
    Chorus.
C OME we shepherds who have seen
Day's king deposed by Night's queen.
Come lift we up our lofty song,
To wake the Sun that sleeps too long.
He in this our general joy,
Slept, and dreamt of no such thing
While we found out the fair-ey'd boy,
      And kissed the cradle of our king;
Tell him he rises now too late,
To show us aught worth looking at.
Tell him we now can show him more
Than he e'er show'd to mortal sight,
Than he himself e'er saw before,
Which to be seen needs not his light:
Tell him Tityrus where th' hast been,
Tell him Thyrsis what th' hast seen.
    Tityrus.
      Gloomy night embrac'd the place
      Where the noble infant lay:
The babe looked up, and show'd his face,
In spite of darkness it was day.
It was thy day, Sweet, and did rise,
Not from the east, but from thy eyes.
    Thyrsis.
Winter chid the world, and sent
The angry North to wage his wars:
The North forgot his fierce intent,
And left perfumes, instead of scars:
By those sweet eyes' persuasive powers

The Flaming Heart Upon The Book And Picture Of The Seraphical Saint Teresa
(St. Teresa is usually expressed with a Seraphim beside her). The first
part of the poem is based on the conceit that the flaming cheeks and fiery
dart of the Seraph should really belong to the Saint. The poets asks
well-meaning readers to be guided by him in transposing the picture; "Read Him
for her;" one would think he had meant to paint some "weak, inferiour, woman
saint."
But had thy pale - fac't purple took
Fire from the burning cheeks of that bright Booke Thou wouldst on her haue heap't up ...

Light
Light is one of the primary metaphors in sacred poetry, suggesting the Divine not framed within a mental concept. But for genuine mystics, this light is not a mere concept; it is directly experienced.
This sense of light is more than a brightness one might experience on a sunny afternoon. This light is perceived as being a living radiance that permeates everything, everywhere, always. This light is immediately understood to be the true source of all things, the foundation on which the physicality of the material world is built.
The sense of boundaries and separation, long taken for granted by the mind as the fundamental nature of existence, suddenly seems illusory, for this light shines through all people and things. It has no edges, and the light of one is the light of another.
This light is recognized as your own Self, while simultaneously being the Self of all others. Since this light is you and, at the same time, it radiates within all, the question arises: How can there be separation? conflict? loss?

Crashaw, Richard ( c.
English religious poet of the metaphysical school. He published a book of Latin sacred epigrams, Epigrammatum Sacrorum Liber (1634). His principal sacred poems were published in Steps to the Temple Some secular poems were added to this work under the title Delights of the Muses . Later editions (1648 and 1652) contained additional poems, and others have since been added from manuscript. Crashaw was born in London and educated at Cambridge University, and he became a fellow of Peterhouse in 1636. In 1644, during the Civil War, he was, in his absence, ejected from Cambridge University by the Parliamentarians. Under the patronage of the exiled Queen Henrietta Maria in France, he was converted to Roman Catholicism. In 1646 he moved to Rome, and later became a cleric there. Crashaw's writing is often impassioned, and the imagery tasteless, but at his best, in poems like
