Stephen Crane
in Relationships
He is very sensitive, cautious, and shy about showing others his feelings. Though he may love and care for someone a great deal, Stephen Crane rarely expresses his feelings openly and freely. Very often Crane's love for someone is expressed by his wish to help him, do something tangible to benefit him or serve him in some way. It is also difficult for him to receive warmth, affection or appreciation, for he often feels that he does not really deserve it or that "they do not really mean it". Crane may therefore come across as rather cool and aloof - much more so than he feels. A deeply ingrained critical attitude often makes Stephen difficult to live with. Stephen Crane needs to learn to be gentler and less of a perfectionist with others and with himself.

What figurative language does Stephen Crane use in Red Badge of Courage
Stephen Crane consistently uses figurative language to create images that vividly describe all aspects of war in The Red Badge of Courage . The passage, "The cold passed reluctantly from the earth, and the retiring fog revealed an army stretched out on the hills, resting," is an example of personification. The cold, the fog, and the army are described as persons with specific behaviors, feelings, and needs. Personification is a type of figurative language that applies human characteristics to nonhuman entities. In The Red Badge of Courage , Crane also uses personification to create a personality for the combatants, both collectively and individually. The clauses, "brigades grinned" and "regiments laughed," are good examples. Crane uses both personification and simile in the line, "The cannon with their noses poked slantingly at the ground grunted and grumbled like stout men, brave but with objections to hurry." This line makes the weapons appear to be living creatures. The use of personification in the line, "The sore joints of the regiment creaked as it painfully floundered into position," turns the regiment into one large, tired soldier.

The Saturday Evening Post list all writers Stephen Crane - LIFE STORIES Stephen Crane: Red Badge to White Ribbon
Stephen Crane's fame comes from one, full decade: first novel at nineteen, Red Badge of Courage and his Black Riders poetry at twenty-four, dead at twenty-nine. From the start, and throughout, "He could never be told, tamed, trained or trammeled," said a classmate at one of the two universities where Crane never went to class; 'born to run,' said the other Asbury Park poet a century later. . . . Crane's New Red Badge
On this day in 1982 Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage was published by Norton and Company in "the only complete edition from the original manuscript." Previous editions had incorporated cuts and changes that had been made in 1895 changes which distorted or muddied Crane's theme, and which were perhaps forced upon him by his first editor.

Taking Advantage Of Stephen Crane
Books Review of: Hotel de Dream By BENJAMIN LYTAL
September 6, 2007 A D V E R T I S E M E N T A D V E R T I S E M E N T Stephen Crane was never afraid of historical fiction. "I have spent ten nights writing a story of the war on my own responsibility but I am not sure that my facts are real and the books won't tell me what I want to know so I must do it all over again, I guess." Although he had never seen battle — he was not born until 1871 — Crane had just written our great novel of the Civil War, "The Red Badge of Courage," a classic that is too often wasted on the young. Now Edmund White, a highly respected novelist and biographer who has recently turned to historical fiction, has published "Hotel de Dream" (Ecco, 228 pages, $23.95), a novel about Stephen Crane. It is a decent, if not essential, contribution to the genre of biopic novels, in which one novelist imagines the life of another. Some readers complain — isn't there something limited about such books? Shouldn't the novelist find a subject beyond his own favorite writers? Taking liberties with the wife of Anthony Trollope, as Mr. White did in "Fanny" (2003) may be a lot of fun. But how does an author confront the intimidating style of his predecessor? In 2004, both Colm Tóibín and David Lodge published novels that starred Henry James, and only Tóibín came close to surviving the inevitable comparison with the master.
