william cowper on his kitten
I have a kitten the drollest of all creatures that ever wore a cat's skin. Her
gambols are not to be described, and would be incredible, if they could. In
point of size she is likely to be a kitten always, being extremely small of her
age, but time, I suppose, that spoils everything, will make her also a cat. You
will see her, I hope, before that melancholy period shall arrive, for no
wisdom that she may gain by experience and reflection hereafter will compensate
the loss of her present hilarity. She is dressed in a tortoise-shell suit, and I
know that you will delight in her.

William Cowper Brann.
The first position he obtained was that of bell boy in a hotel. Later on he learned to be a painter and grainer, then a printer, a reporter, and finally an editorial writer. He was energetic, industrious and painstaking in whatever he undertook to do, therefore always employed. Early in his struggle he realized the need of an education, in the acquirement of which he applied himself with eager diligence. Nature had endowed him with keen perceptive powers, a retentive memory and great mental vigor, by means of which he soon accumulated considerable knowledge. Every moment that could be spared from his daily toil was spent in reading books of science, philosophy, history, biography and general literature. In this way he became thoroughly informed on almost every important subject, as will be seen by the contents of his writings. On March 3, 1877, at Rochelle, Illinois, he was married to Miss Carrie Martin, who, with their two children, Grace Gertrude and William Carlyle is now living in the beautiful home, here at Waco, from which he was buried April 3, 1898. During all the years, from the time he left the hospitable home of Mr. Hawkins, in 1868, until after he had successfully launched "Brann's ICONOCLAST," he suffered the harassing annoyances of extreme poverty, in the endurance of which he was cheerful, hopeful and diligent in the equipment of his mind preparatory to the work he always believed he would some day be able to accomplish.

VERSES SUPPOSED TO BE WRITTEN BY ALEXANDER SELKIRK This is the full text of the poem of which the first stanza is shown in the Glossary to illustrate the term, scan. It also provides an example of anapestic feet and the second stanza begins with an apostrophe.
I am monarch of all I survey,
My right there is none to dispute;
From the center all round to the sea
I am lord of the fowl and the brute. O solitude! where are the charms
That sages have seen in thy face?
While anapestic trimeter is the prevailing metrical pattern of this poem, only 20 of the 56 lines are fully anapestic; 36 lines begin with an iambic foot. Better dwell in the midst of alarms
Than reign in this horrible place. I am out of humanity's reach.
I must finish my journey alone,
Never hear the sweet music of speech;
I start at the sound of my own. The beasts that roam over the plain My form with indifference see; They are so unacquainted with man, Their tameness is shocking to me. Born in Scotland in 1676, Alexander Selkirk ran away to sea when he was nineteen. In 1704, during a privateering expedition to plunder Spanish shipping off the Pacific coast of South America, he became concerned over the seaworthiness of their ship. After a quarrel with the captain, he asked to be put ashore on the Juan Fernandez islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile. Selkirk remained alone on the island for four years and four months, until finally rescued by an English vessel in 1709.

Anti-Slavery Poems by William Cowper
William Cowper
From Charity
To associate all the branches of mankind;
And if a boundless plenty be the robe,
Trade is the golden girdle of the globe.
Wise to promote whatever end he means,
God opens fruitful Nature’s various scenes:
Each climate needs what other climes produce,
And offers something to the general use;
No land but listens to the common call,
And in return receives supply from all.
This genial intercourse, and mutual aid, Cheers what were else a universal shade, Calls nature from her ivy-mantled den, And softens human rock-work into men. Ingenious Art, with her expressive face, Steps forth to fashion and refine the race; Not only fills necessity’s demand, But overcharges her capacious hand: Capricious taste itself can crave no more Than she supplies from her abounding store: She strikes out all that luxury can ask, And gains new vigour at her endless task. Hers is the spacious arch, the shapely spire

  • William Cowper 1731-1800
    English poet, hymn writer, satirist, letter writer, essayist, and translator.
    INTRODUCTION
    Considered a transitional figure in English poetry whose works embody both eighteenth and nineteenth-century styles and concerns, Cowper was a forerunner of Romanticism in England and one of the most popular poets of his age. Known for his early comic ballad, “The Journey of John Gilpin,” which established his literary reputation, the Olney Hymns (1779), now a part of Evangelical liturgy, and his mock-heroic verse satires, Cowper is principally remembered for his discursive and conversational blank verse masterpiece, The Task (1785). A poem composed in response to Lady Austen's flippant remark that he write on the subject of her sofa, the six highly descriptive books of The Task demonstrate Cowper's contention that repose in the country lends itself to the cultivation of “piety and virtue,” while life in the city degrades humankind by its corruptive influence. The work is viewed as Cowper's lasting poetic expression on nature, society, God, and man, as it regards subjects ranging from the topical and trivial to the national and spiritual. Additionally, Cowper continues to be regarded for the spontaneity and simplicity of his nature lyrics, the earnest, personal tone of his religious poetry, and the wit embodied in his satires and correspondence.

    famous and familiar quotations
      Here are some famous and familiar quotations from William Cowper poetry:-
        O for a lodge in some vast wilderness,
    Some boundless contiguity of shade,
    Where rumour of oppression and deceit,
    Of unsuccessful or successful war,
    Might never reach me more.
        But war's a game which, were their subjects wise, King's would not play at.     Mountains interposed, Make enemies of nations who had else, Like kindred drops, been mingled into one.     He sees that this great roundabout The world, with all its motley rout, Church, army, physic, law, Its customs and its businesses, Is no concern at all of his, And says - what says he? - Caw.     There is a pleasure in poetic pains Which only poets know.     How fleet is a glance of the mind! Compared with the speed of its flight The tempest itself lags behind

    Newton, John, 1725-1807
    William Cowper, Mary Unwin, and John Newton collection. 1773-1824. 4 manuscripts (3 by Cowper and 1 by Newton) and 4 letters. William Cowper, English poet, was born at his father's rectory at Great Berkhampstead on 15 November 1731. He was educated at Westminster College and called to the bar in 1754. Following a spell of mental instability, bouts of which were to plague him for the rest of his life, he went to live at Huntingdon with the Revd. Morely Unwin, his wife, Mary (b. 1724) and their son William, who by then was away from home. On the death of Unwin, Mary moved to Olney in Buckinghamshire with Cowper. The curate in Olney, John Newton, collaborated with Cowper in the writing of the Olney Hymns (1779) after which he moved to London. Under Mrs. Unwin's influence, Cowper wrote a series of moral satires, published in 1782 as Poems . Mrs. Unwin died on 17 December 1796 while William Cowper lived for a few more years, dying on 25 April 1800.

    Any reading of Cowper's work that takes his evangelical faith seriously must deal with the issues raised by the biography. Accordingly, I present an approach to the biographical problem that into account the painful gap between Cowper's poetic proclamations of evangelical hope and private experiences of despair. Paradoxically, it is Cowper's perceived loss of salvation that makes him uniquely qualified to speak of salvation. How, though, to do so while speaking on behalf of the saved (as he does in the Satires) remained a problem. In the Satires, Cowper attempts to solve the problem by taking a position similar to that of Interpreter in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress: he directs reader attention to various edifying images of salvation or damnation, but scrupulously avoids identification with any of them.
