    William Cowper worked himself into a state of madness over fear of facing an examination. Amazing Grace endures as one of the most popular pieces of music in the English language. Its universal appeal inspired journalist Bill Moyers to tell the story of this song through the people who have sung it and the words of its author.

    And rides upon the storm. William Cowper, who wrote that hymn, was born in England on this day, November 26, l73l . His life was full of personal anguish. At five, his mother died, and Cowper, a timid and sensitive child, was treated with great cruelty by an older boy. Other school experiences were also painful. At eighteen William began to study law, and fell in love with his cousin Theodora Cowper, but her father did not approve of the match. Neither of them ever married. After completing law studies he made little exertion in the field. Later he was offered a government position for which he would have to be examined. William was so terrified of having to answer questions that he worked himself into a fit of madness. At one point, he became so despondent that he attempted suicide. After time in a private asylum, he recovered his reason. Cowper moved to the country town of Olney, where John Newton, the ex-slaver, was pastor. Soon they were close friends.

A Christian's wit is offensive light,
A beam that aids, but never grieves the sight;
Vig'rous in age as in the flush of youth,
'Tis always active on the side of truth. Wit A fool may now and then be right by chance. Fools A fool must now and then be right by chance. Folly Proverbs A fool with judges, amongst fools a judge. Fools A lawyer's dealings should be just and fair; Honesty shines with great advantage there. Lawyers A life of ease is a difficult pursuit. Ease A snug and friendly game at cards. Cards Absence from whom we love is worse than death, and frustrates hope severer than despair. Absence Accomplishments have taken virtue's place, and wisdom falls before exterior grace. Wisdom Adored through fear, strong only to destroy. Adore Alas! if my best Friend, who laid down His life for me, were to remember all the instances in which I have neglected Him, and to plead them against me in judgment, where should I hide my guilty head in the day of recompense? I will pray, therefore, for blessings on my friends, even though they cease to be so, and upon my enemies, though they continue such. Forgiveness All affectation; 'tis my perfect scorn;

    Olney Hymns
    by William Cowper
      These hymns were written between 1765 and 1773 at the village of Olney (OHN'ee) where Cowper was under the influence of the Anglican Evangelical preacher John Newton. This was a period of great religious fervor within the Evangelical movement and for Cowper, and this enthusiasm is clear in the poems. Less clear, but still visible, are the lingering affects of the madness which debilitated Cowper in 1762 and to which he again succumbed in 1773. When William Cowper wrote When darkness long has veil'd my mind,
      And smiling day once more appears, he spoke from experience. The hymns show Cowper's command of direct, simple language. They also show the clarity of his mind. Each hymn is a little sermon, and most of them are preached more plainly and clearly than any you will hear from the pulpit. Bob Blair

    william cowper, 18th century English dramatist. Biography, Poetry, Study Resources.
    http://www.luminarium.org/eightlit/cowper/cowperbio.php
    WILLIAM COWPER [pronounced 'Cooper'], English poet, was born in the rectory (now rebuilt) of Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, on the 26th of November (O.S. 15th) 1731, his father the Rev. John Cowper being rector of the parish as well as a chaplain to George II. On both the father's and the mother's side he was of ancient lineage. The father could trace his family back to the time of Edward IV when the Cowpers were Sussex landowners, while his mother, Ann, daughter of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall, Norfolk, was of the same race as the poet Donne , and the family claimed to have Plantagenet blood in its veins. Of more human interest were Cowper's immediate predecessors. His grandfather was that Spencer Cowper who, after being tried for his life on a charge of murder, lived to be a judge of the court of common pleas, while his elder brother became lord chancellor and Earl Cowper, a title which became extinct in 1905.
    The poet appears to have attended a dame's school in earliest infancy, but on his mother's death, when he was six years old, he was sent to boarding-school, to a Dr Pitman at Markyate, a village 6 miles from Berkhampstead.
    From 1738 to 1741 he was placed in the care of an oculist, as he suffered from inflammation of the eyes. In the latter year he was sent to A HREF="http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/westminsterschool.htm">Westminster school

    William Cowper The Odyssey of Homer Introduction "Thou god of our idolatry, the press... Thou fountain, at which drink the good and wise; Thou ever-bubbling spring of endless lies; Like Eden's dread probationary tree, Knowledge of good and evil is from thee. ( The Progress of Error William Cowper, poet and letter-writer, was son of the rector of Great Berkhamstead in Hertfordshire and amother who died when he was only six. After an education at Westminster he trained as a lawyer and was called to the bar in 1754. As a child he was a sensitive individual who suffered at the hands of bullies and began to experience severe depression. Indeed he was so disturbed that he unsuccessfully tried to kill himself at least six times (by poisoning, stabbing and hanging) when faced with an examination for a clerkship at the House of Lords. In fact he later worked there with the help of family connections. His melancholy was worsened by his failure to marry his cousin Theodora Cowper and he had religious visions for the rest of his life, feeling cast from God's mercy. Cowper also spent some time at an 'Insanorum' in St Albans but was kept alive by his interest in evangelical Christianity and the help of the Reverend Morley Unwin with whom he lived as a kind of surrogate son. He wrote Olney Hymns in 1779 and following another suicide attempt while living with Unwin's widow to whom he became engaged he entered a more settled time. He wrote his satires at the turn of the 1780s to be published in 1782 and also some shorter poems along with

    William Cowper: The Troubled and Talented Saint
    Monday, January 14, 2008 The English poet and hymn writer William Cowper (1731-1800, pronounced Cooper) was afflicted with severe bouts of depression and haunting despair for virtually all of his life. While he was a contemporary of George Whitefield and John Wesley, and Rev. John Newton served as a mentor, many have not heard of this 18th century English writer.
    Much of Cowper’s depression and anguish stems from the death of his mother and four of his siblings all by the age of six. Cowper was then sent away to boarding school and terrorized for a number of years by an older bully. Later, he fell in love with a cousin only to have her father abruptly end the relationship. The refusal left a young Cowper deeply troubled and distraught. Cowper was pressured into law by his own father, an Anglican minister who was also the chaplain for George II. He buckled under the pressure and made several suicide attempts in the coming days. After several failed attempts by various methods he tried to hang himself with a garter, but it broke while he was unconscious on his third attempt.
    Immediately I received the strength to believe it, and the full beams of the Sun of Righteousness shone upon me. I saw the sufficiency of the atonement He had made, my pardon sealed in His blood, and all the fullness and completeness of His justification. In a moment I believed, and received the gospel. Unless the Almighty arm had been under me, I think I should have died with gratitude and joy. My eyes filled with tears, and my voice choked with transport; I could only look up to heaven in silent fear, overwhelmed with love and wonder.

Cowper is the most important English poet of the period between Pope and the illustrious group headed by Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley, which arose out of the intellectual ferment of the European Revolution. As a reformer of poetry, who called it back from conventionality to nature, and at the same time as the teacher of a new school of sentiment which acted as a solvent upon the existing moral and social system, he may perhaps himself be numbered among the precursors of the revolution, though he was certainly the mildest of them all. As a sentimentalist he presents a faint analogy to Rousseau, whom in natural
