Education Westminster School Occupation Poet William Cowper (pronounced " Cooper IPA /ˈkuːpɚ/ November 26 April 25 was an English poet and hymnodist . One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. He suffered from periods of severe depression , and although he found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity , the source of his much-loved hymns, he often experienced doubt and fears that he was doomed to eternal damnation . However, his religious motivations and association with John Newton (who wrote the hymn " Amazing Grace ") led to much of the poetry for which he is best remembered in the popular mind.

William Cowper (pronounced Cooper , English poet. Cowper suffered attacks of insanity throughout his life, and sought either treatment or retirement in an asylum early in his life. There he became interested in the predestinarian theology of John Calvin , and became devoted to evangelical Christianity. In he moved to Olney, where he wrote The Olney Hymns with the evangelical preacher John Newton. The project was interrupted by another attack of insanity, during which he was convinced of his irrevocable damnation a sense he describes in his last important poem, "The Cast-Away." In he published his most famous work, The Task , a long poem in six books. Wollstonecraft quotes from The Task in A Vindication A patriot's blood, Well spent in such a strife, may earn indeed, And for a time ensure, to his lov'd land, The sweets of liberty and equal laws; But martyrs struggle for a brighter prize, And win it with more pain. Their blood is shed In confirmation of the noblest claim To walk with God, to be divinely free, To soar, and to anticipate the skies! Yet few remember them. They liv'd unknown Till persecution dragg'd them into fame, And chas'd them up to heav'n. Their ashes flew No marble tells us whither. With their names No bard embalms and sanctifies his song: And history, so warm on meaner themes, Is cold on this. She execrates indeed The tyranny that doom'd them to the fire, But gives the glorious suff'rers little praise. He is the freeman whom the truth makes free, And all are slaves beside.

William Cowper is buried in the Chapel of St. Thomas of Canterbury (formerly St. Edmunds Chapel), St. Nicholas Church, East Dereham, Norfolk, England. (See map...ref no. 25) Cowper was the son of the Rector of Great Berkhamsted and was educated at Westminster School in London. Cowper's mother died when he was only six years old and this event had a profound effect upon his already sensitive nature. Later in life, Cowper would be inspired to write one of his finest poems when he received a picture of his mother from his cousin Ann Bodham. After leaving school Cowper became articled to a solicitor and in 1754 he was called to the bar and later took up a clerkship in the House of Commons. However, by this stage his fits of depression had became severe and he attempted suicide. Cowper was to suffer similar bouts of depression for the rest of his life and, as a result, he lived in virtual retirement. In 1765 he moved into the house of the Revd Unwin at Huntingdon. After Unwin's death Cowper moved - together with Unwin's widow Mary - to a house in Olney (now the Cowper Museum). While in Olney Cowper met John Newton and the two collaborated on the

Another figure from the Graveyard School , Cowper (pronounced "cooper") was a hymn writer and poet, a lawyer who abandoned the profession, and a sufferer from "melancholia" (depression), as was fellow boneyardist William Collins . Cowper also suffered from bouts of some more disturbing mental disequilibrium, associated in his mind with religious conviction and a deeply troubling sense of his own damnation. He is best known for his hymns, his translations from Latin and Greek (including The Odyssey ), and for the long poem The Task (1785), well-known in its day, passages of which evoke the melancholy (found also in some odes and other poems) which bring him within the purview of the graveyarders, though he's not quite as charnel in his imagery as, say, Robert Blair or Edward Young , his companions in boneyard verse...

WILLIAM COWPER (1731-1800), English poet, was born in the rectory (now rebuilt) of Great Berkhampstead Hertfordshire , on the 26th of November (O.S. 15th) 1731, his father the Rev. John Cowper being rector of the parish as well as a chaplain to George II . On both the father's and the mother's side he was of ancient lineage. The father could trace his family back to the time of Edward IV . when the Cowpers were Sussex landowners, while his mother, Ann, daughter of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall, Norfolk , was of the same race as the poet Donne, and the family claimed to have Plantagenet blood in its veins . Of more human interest were Cowper's immediate predecessors. His grandfather was that Spencer Cowper who, after being tried for his life on a charge of murder , lived to be a judge of the court of common pleas , while his elder brother became lord chancellor and Earl Cowper, a title which became extinct in 1905. Abstract
    The paper compares and contrasts these two Renaissance interpretations of the Madonna and Child. It looks at the differing stylistic elements and discusses why the paintings are significant works of art for their timeframe. The attempt to blend the real world with the spiritual is explored and the painters' different techniques in their quest to achieve that blending are studied. The paper concludes with a concise summary of the similarities and the differences between these two paintings.
    From the Paper
    "Raphael spent several years in Florence where he produced seventeen images of the Virgin Mary and Child. During that time, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were his primary teachers, which would account for his stylistic rendering of the Madonna and Child. The Small Cowper Madonna, which was done in oil on wood and was completed around 1505, reflects the innovations that he learned form his years with Leonardo. He mirrored the Florentine method of painting that concentrated on intimacy and simplicity of the setting."

    The Poems of William Cowper
    Cowper's name will always be associated with that of John Newton, his friend and pastor. Together they wrote many hymns familiar to us today. Cowper suffered from bouts of acute depression. Newton saved him from suicide several times. In fact, because his nervous system was so delicate, he was unable to hold a job. Therefore he spent his time in literary persuits, including writing poetry. His poetry was quite influential. Many people who scorned evangelicals as "Methodists" would read Cowper's poems. He addressed many social issues, such as African slavery, as well as spreading the Gospel. One of Cowper's critics says that Newton was a bad influence, causing him to "indulge and inflame his sensiblity in the dark ecstasies of Calvinism, while at the same time affronting all that was reasonable and humane in his nature." (H I Faussett) Judge for yourself. I am told that he pronounced his name "Cooper." Olney Hymns Walking With God

    An excerpt from Elizabeth Barrett Browning
    It is a place where happy saints may weep amid their praying;
    Yet let the grief and humbleness as low as silence can languish:
    Earth surely now may give her calm to whom she gave her anguish.
    O men, this man in brotherhood your weary paths beguiling,
    Groaned inly while he taught you peace, and died while ye were smiling! And now, what time ye all may read through dimming tears his story,
    How discord on the music fell and darkness on the glory,
    And how when, one by one, sweet sounds and wandering lights departed,
    He wore no less a loving face because so broken-hearted. With quiet sadness and no gloom, I learn to think upon him,
    With meekness that is gratefulness to God whose Heaven hath won him
