A New Perspective
by Sarah Vales Poets in American history have struggled over time to create or find a distinct American voice among the many different cultural influences and borrowed styles. Each era of poets contributed to the search in a slightly different way, but it was the modernists that really sought to make poetry new. A group to these modernists, called the expatriates, thought that the only way to obtain a new voice would be to escape any ties with old traditions, and to leave the country that held them captive in an inspirationaless environment. Turned off by America, they left for Europe only to rediscover America, and in turn, contribute enormously to the growth and development of the American voice. Many reasons surround the great expatriate movement but the majority left because they felt America had nothing to offer but oppression. Writers in America were viewed as suspicious and were given no respect (Couteau, 1). Europe offered artistic freedom unlike the leftover American Puritanism and new commercialism that were hostile to the writer (Earnest, 254). William Carlos Williams stated that this heritage had produced "a race incapable of flower," and that America had "become the most lawless country in the civilized world...a generation of gross know-nothingism, of blackened churches where hymns groan like chants from stupefied jungles" (Earnest, 254). Ezra Pound echoed the artists' complaints in his poem The Rest

The Mandala Experience : Visions of the Center in Schizophrenic and Fictional Accounts of Disintegration Leslie Trueman Schizophrenia is commonly viewed as a paradigm of disintegration and breakdown. It may surprise some to discover that schizophrenic experience often includes visions of the center, and that these visions can provide a sense of well-being to the disoriented sufferer of psychic breakdown.

The Absolute Realism of Robert Bresson
Posted on April 30 at 10.57, 2004 by Eric Mahleb Filled under Cinema Drama Essays To attempt to define the exact meaning of realism would be a useless excercise, one that would be most likely bound to fail. Countless critics and historians have offered their own interpretations over the years, providing valuable insights into the subject, but succeeding only in offering partial explanations of the concept. Through this ‘extreme relativity of the concept of realism’[1], any effort to develop a universal definition of realism becomes trivial and secondary to the more interesting study of the various branches that a desire for capturing reality can engender in art and, specifically here, in cinema.
This confusion surrounding realism in film can be illustrated through the work of Robert Bresson, the French director who in a career lasting fifty years directed 14 films only. Are Bresson’s films realistic or are they not? Much has been said about his unusual style, the coldness and lack of emotions in his characters, his dark and pessimistic subject matter, but little has been said about the realism that he brought to his films. And when the topic has in fact been discussed, it has been done with a certain degree of ambiguity and unease. The most likely reason for this is that Bresson’s films do not fit the standard idea and convention of realism. It does not necessarily adhere to what we have come to expect when watching reality on screen. Yet, is it possible that, in spite of appearances, Bresson had mastered the purest form of realism yet, something that I will call Absolute Realism?

first draft of a paper: A Fourteenth-Century Transparent Text: the 1389 au 18 mai 1392. Robert Levine English Department Boston University 236 Bay State Road Boston 02215 Disenfranchised politically, economically, and socially, the urban proletariat appears infrequently in the literature of the Middle Ages. Only writers of fabliaux tend to assign them major parts in a text. Significantly, fabliaux until recently were considered, in effect, transparent texts, in which "events seem to tell themselves." [Hayden White's phrase, in "The Value of Narrativity in the Representation of Reality," in On Narrative , ed. W.J.T. Mitchell, Chicago, 1981, p. 3]. Learned readers tend to pastoralize the life of the peasant and of the proletariat, imagining that lower-class life is in some sense more "real," while retaining a suspicion that texts dealing with aristocrats are in some sense "false," that is, stylized, or masked in conventions. However, R. Howard Bloch recently demonstrated that such a use of these texts requires a naive submission to "the tenacious chimera of the transparent text." [R. Howard Bloch, The Scandal of the Fabliaux Gallic Salt , Berkeley, 1974, p. 11] had earlier contested the accuracy of the fabliaux: "To the core the fabliaux are burlesques, and their personages are not so much individuals as caricatures of social and psychological types. Although scholars may find them valuable sources for historical detail, they are no truer to life than the monsters who inhabit Juvenal's Rome." More recently, Gabriel Bianciotto has pointed out that the authors of fabliaux had idealizing impulses, particularly in the forty tales that contain representations of urban life ("Le Fabliau et La Ville," in

ZONES OF INTENSITY: The Case of George W. Bush by Robert Couteau "'Zones of Intensity': The Case of George W. Bush" There is a phenomena in astrocartography which I call "Zones of Intensity." In certain
astrocartography maps, Leading Planet (most-aspected) lines cross over or are found in
great proximity to the least-aspected or Primary Transcendental line. The midpoint-field
formed by these two (or more) lines creates this so-called Zone of Intensity. In my research I have found that, at the very least, these regions are extremely
challenging. Basically these zones call into question the entire task of "integration":
reining-in the Leading energy and channeling it into the Transcendental task. This is often
a very difficult thing to accomplish though, and a great number of people, when in such a
zone, either fail to accomplish this, flee the zone because of the extreme challenges it
poses, or, if they are more conscious and a bit lucky, they have certain experiences in

You may have to register to get in; it's free, and only takes a minute, and it is very much worth it. As other newspapers and journals start placing their archives online, I will be sure to flesh out these sections.
