'Jessica' by Bryce Courtenay
Fiction - paperback; Penguin; 676 pages; 2000. This best-selling novel is set in outback Australia during the early 20th Century. Jessica Bergman, the heroine of the book, is a tomboy who helps her father, a Danish immigrant, run the family farm. Meanwhile her elder sister, the beautiful but stuck-up Meg, dreams up plans, with the help of her mother, to wed the local rich boy. When a brutal murder is carried out at a neighbouring farm, Jessica helps the killer survive a lynch mob hell bent on delivering their own form of justice. This one act of compassion has long-term implications for the rest of Jessica's life - and she is banished from her family, from society and, later, from her child, who is born out of wedlock. Ultimately this is a relatively sappy and sentimental tale, albeit it an easy to read one. (I was trapped on a long-haul flight with it, and read pretty much the entire 676 pages on the plane.) While it's supposedly based on a true story, Courtenay offers no explanations, no historical footnotes or afterword to back this up. I'm inclined to think that the murder and Jessica's role in its aftermath may, in fact, be the only true elements and Courtenay has fabricated the rest, which is fine, because it's fiction after all, but as a reader I would have liked to have known what was true and what was not. That's not my only problem with Jessica . I found much of it sloppily written and in need of some strong editing. It's at least 300 pages too long.

Summary: Courtenay's son Damon was born in Australia with severe haemophilia. Along with the moving story of an afflicted but strong-spirited boy, Courtenay paints a bitter and angry picture of the Australian medical community at that time, steeped in paternalism and political expediency.
Several times a week Damon would bleed into his joints, and his father would take him to the hospital for infusion of Factor VIII to induce clotting. In other countries families were allowed to stock Factor VIII and infuse at home, minimizing both disruption to the family and permanent damage to joints. This was not permitted in Australia, to the extreme detriment of haemophiliacs and their families.
Worse than this, the screening and fractionation of donated blood in Australia did not at that time meet safety standards known and required in other countries. Damon contracted AIDS from the contaminated Australian blood supply and died of that disease on April Fool's Day in 1991.

    Talking With
    BRYCE COURTENAY
"Audiobooks," Bryce Courtenay told AudioFile, "go back to where stories all began."
At this point, the Australian author is such an inveterate storyteller that he began to tell a story—about telling stories. "It is the gloaming time, and there is a roar of a lion. In front of an early cave, a man by the fire says, ‘This is what happened. . ." Bryce’s impromptu story was full of sounds, colors, and the human voice, and, as he does with his books, he put the listener in the scene, viscerally feeling all the personal and physical elements.
In finishing his story, Bryce continued his expository comments on storytelling. "The voice is more intrinsically honest than the written word." Consequently, Bryce is a huge fan of audiobooks. He is very proud of his audiobooks because they deliver this storytelling in a powerful form.
"The audio versions extend the reach of my books." Before audiobooks were commercially available, Bryce had his books recorded for his neighbors in the remote Yarramalong Valley who do not read. He so wanted to share his books with the nonreaders that he contacted the recording service of the Royal Blind Society. In listening to his books, his neighbors became "part of the intellectual conversation." Bryce has long supported the cause of literacy and delights in the joy of a 60-year-old man who tells him he has "read" his first book. "Audiobooks are tremendous for literacy," Bryce continued. "They are such a gift. They give everyone the opportunity to understand the human condition."
