Whitethorn
Bryce Courtenay
Reviewer: Jill Murphy Tom Fitzsaxby is a young orphan at a boys farm in rural South Africa. It is 1939, and South Africa has weighed in on the side of the Allies against Nazi Germany. For its Afrikaaner community, this is not a popular move. It brings to the fore the old wounds of the Boer War and its murder-by-concentration-camp. High in the mountains hatred for the British runs high, and Tom, as the only child at the Boys Farm with an English name, becomes a target for bullying and abuse - not only by the other boys, but also by the staff. His miserable existence is made bearable by his only friend Mattress, a Zulu farm boy and his dog, a rescued fox terrier named Tinker. And even these two are under threat... Whitethorn is a pretty straightforward bildungsroman. It follows Tom Fitzsaxby from the nightmare years at the Boys Farm, through school and university right up until he is thirty years old and finally able to put the ghosts of his past to rest. It's very well-written. Courtenay has the most wonderful ear for dialogue and very strong, ironic sense of humour. It takes great skill to write about the kind of unrelenting, vicious abuse suffered by Tom in such a way as to make the reader laugh, without ever diminishing the pain and the loneliness. And laugh I did. Tom's major concern is to avoid getting into "the deep shit", but try as he might, "the deep shit" looms large every single day and his childish attempts to avoid it lead to some hilarious adventures. The staff at the Boys Farm are bullies to a man, and their self-important posturings are also exceedingly funny but at the same time shocking and utterly horrific. Tom is an absolutely delightful child and Courtenay creates an immediate and very strong emotional attraction to him. It's all very Dickensian.

The Classic Novel of South Africa- "The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay. $5.00 or best offer.
"In 1939, as Hitler casts his enormous, cruel shadow across the world, the seeds of apartheid take root in South Africa. There, a boy called Peekay is born. His childhood is marked by humiliation and abandonment, yet he vows to survive and conceives heroic dreams–which are nothing compared to what life actually has in store for him. He embarks on an epic journey through a land of tribal superstition and modern prejudice where he will learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the power of one."

31. Smokey Joe's Cafe By Bryce Courtenay

http://maorinews.com/writings/books/smokey.htm
Book Review:
"Smokey Joe's Cafe"
by Bryce Courtenay, Penguin, Australia, 2001 A group of Australian diggers, veterans of the Vietnam war, get together to hatch a scheme to get their own back on an ungrateful government. This is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad yarn about some of the survivors of the Battle of Long Tan. Thommo returns from Vietnam, unloved and unwanted by his country, and develops complicated physical and mental problems which officialdom refuses to attribute to his war service. He marries Wendy who stoically puts up with his behaviour, and they have a daughter. At three years of age she develops leukaemia, and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive, and again the government refuses to acknowledge that it might be a result of his Vietnam service. Angry and alone, seeking moments of peace in the bottle and the weed, he meets with ten of his mates, most of the remnants of his old platoon who survived Long Tan, and they hatch their plan. They are joined by an ex-Viet Cong whose comrades and family suffer the same symptoms from the same war, and by Wendy, who adds logic and passion to their sometimes fuddled thinking. She helps moulds them, and a large cast of supporting vets, into a unit fighting for justice and maybe a bit of revenge.

Chicken Soup Farts
(from Bryce Courtenay's The Potato Factory and with thanks and appreciation to Maggie Owens for calling my attention to this reference.)
In this saga of Australia's beginnings, Bryce Courtenay tells the story of Ikey Solomon, an English criminal in the first half of the 19th century, who makes the harsh journey from London to the convict settlement of Van Dieman's Land in Australia. It is when Ikey flees London and temporarily lands in New York City that he and the author reflect on their assumptions of what it means to be Jewishincluding the birthright of chicken soup: As an English Jew Ikey had assumed that he would fit in snugly enough. After all, the Jews of his world were street traders and merchants and of a naturally talkative and friendly disposition with the inclination to congregate together, marry among themselves, and on those several pious occasions such as Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kuppur to share their faith. They would also attend synogogue on the Sabbath as brothers according to the ancient laws of Abraham, the prophets and the rabbinical creed. Being a Jew, while being a matter of religion and orthodoxy, was also one of temperament. A Jew does not expect any but his own kind to understand him. Being Jewish is not something you wear outwardly like a badge, rather it is something you feel inwardly. It is as if your heart beats to a different cadence. This is as true of the Jew who is a villain as it is of one who is a rabbi. The smell of a chicken soup fart with noodles is absolutely one hundred per cent unmistakably Jewish. If you should be making chicken soup, delicious chicken soup, and you wish to make it Jewish, maybe you could try making these noodles.

MORE ON MONDAY: The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
This week's More on Monday isn't a book I've just read - it's my favourite book of all time: Bryce Courtenay’s first novel The Power of One It's the story of Peekay, a white boy growing up in South Africa in the 1940s. We meet him first aged five and at boarding school where he is mercilessly bullied (‘I had had no previous warning that I was wicked and it came as a fearful surprise’ ), his only friend a rooster he names Granpa Chook. You won’t be surprised to hear that the chicken doesn’t make it to the end of the book. But Peekay - Peekay becomes a champion boxer - and I, for one, fell completely in love with him. I have two memories of reading this book. The first: on a train, breathless and shocked by the brutality of Peekay’s first boxing match, glancing around the carriage expecting the other passengers to look as bright-eyed and enthralled as me. The second: lying on my bed forcing myself to slow my reading and savour the last few pages, but still finishing all too soon and in tears. I dreamt about Peekay after finishing the book - the first, last and only time I’ve dreamt about a fictional character.
