Born in Florida, Patricia Cornwell was raised there as well as in North Carolina. She graduated in 1979 with a degree in literature and was both a crime reporter as well as worked auditing records in the office of the chief medical examiner of Richmond. The latter post inspired her character Dr. Kay Scarpetta (even if her first book was a 1983 biography of Ruth Graham). Her first novel, Postmortem , is the only novel to have won the Edgar John Creasey Anthony and Macavity awards as well as the Prix du Roman d’Adventure all with the same book. She also won the Gold Dagger for Cruel and Unusual in 1993. Cornwell has also created a second series, a police procedural this time, initially set in Charlotte but with the second book the set has moved to Richmond. In 2002 she published an extremely controversial non-fiction study on Jack the Ripper which is bound to be highly criticized.

By Jane Letters of Opinion Misc Happy Thanksgiving Dear Author Readers. I came across a special tribute by one Patricia Cornwell to all her fans and had to share it. website a message from Patricia Cornwell making a call to her fans to contact everyone they know and strong arm them into leaving her positive feedback on etailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble because apparently she cannot believe that the people who have left negative reviews actually dislike her work. Book of the Dead just dull, silly and pointless, with unappealing characters and run-of-the-mill lousy prose. Giving it a one-star review is generous.

HAS CRIME NOVELIST PATRICIA CORNWELL IDENTIFIED JACK THE RIPPER?
Or Defamed A Dead Artist? By JOHN W. DEAN Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 Before reading a recent New York Times editorial, I had never heard of the "19th-century Impressionist painter Walter Richard Sickert, a disciple of Whistler and friend of Degas, a frequenter of London's demimonde who painted prostitutes menaced by malevolent male figures." Sickert is the man who crime novelist Patricia Cornwell claims is the infamous Jack The Ripper. Nor am I a Ripperologist, as students of this subject call themselves. But I do have strong feelings about defaming defenseless dead people; there is a hole in American law, when it comes to this issue, that invites irresponsible history. Has Cornwell closed the case? Or defamed Sickert? It was with these thoughts in mind that I read Cornwell's new nonfiction work – Portrait of A Killer: Jack The Ripper Case Closed . It did not take long to find the answer. Cornwell's Investigation: From Scotland Yard to DNA Testing Cornwell's search was prompted by a chance visit to Scotland Yard in May 2001, she writes in her book. Her tour guide, Deputy Assistant Commissioner John Grieve, happened to be an expert in Jack the Ripper's crimes. When he offered a tour of the Ripper crime scenes, Cornwell couldn't resist.

Patricia Cornwell was born on June 9, 1956, in Miami, Florida, and grew up in Montreat, North Carolina. Following graduation from Davidson College in 1979, she began working at the Charlotte Observer, rapidly advancing from listing television programs to writing feature articles to covering the police beat. She won an investigative reporting award from the North Carolina Press Association for a series of articles on prostitution and crime in downtown Charlotte. A Time for Remembering, her award-winning biography of Mrs. Billy Graham, was published in 1983. From 1984 to 1990 she worked as a technical writer and a computer analyst at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, Virginia. Her first crime novel, Postmortem, was published by Scribner’s in 1990. Initially rejected by seven major publishing houses, it became the first novel to win the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity awards as well as the French Prix du Roman d’Aventure in a single year. In Postmortem, Cornwell introduced Dr. Kay Scarpetta as the intrepid Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1999, Dr. Scarpetta herself won the Sherlock Award for best detective created by an American author. Following the success of her first novel, Cornwell has written a string of bestsellers featuring Kay Scarpetta, her detective sidekick Marino, and her volatile niece, Lucy: Body of Evidence (1991), All That Remains (1992), Cruel and Unusual (1993) [which won Britain’s prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the year’s best crime novel], The Body Farm (1994), From Potter’s Field (1995), Cause of Death (1996), Unnatural Exposure (1997), Point of Origin (1998), Black Notice (1999), The Last Precinct (2000), Blow Fly (2003), Trace (2004), and Predator (2005).
