Patricia Cornwell
Bio Patricia Carroll Daniels was born on June 9, 1956, in Miami. Her father, Sam Daniels, was a lawyer who had clerked for Hugo Black, a Supreme Court Justice. He passed away in 1996. Her mother, Marilyn "Pat" Daniels was a secretary. Patricia was the second child of three; she has a younger brother and an older brother. When she was five years old, Patricia's parents' marriage began to come apart. Two years later, her mother moved, with the three kids, to Montreat, North Carolina. Patricia ended up living two miles down the road from Ruth Bell Graham and her husband, evangelist Billy Graham. Ruth would eventually become a friend and mentor to Patricia, being one of the first people to encourage her to write. In high school, Patricia played No. 3 singles on the (men's) tennis team and was undefeated. After graduation, she attended King College and shortly thereafter transferred to Davidson College on a tennis scholarship. She eventually gave up the tennis scholarship and worked several jobs, including waitressing, to pay for her education. In 1979, after graduating from college, Patricia began her writing career with the Charlotte Observer. She worked as a journalistic factotum, features writer and, eventually, a police reporter. It was her crime reporting/writing which earned her several awards. In 1980, she married Charles Cornwell, an English professor 17 years her senior. He decided to quit his job at Davidson College in order to pursue a degree in divinity. With some trepidation, Patricia moved to Richmond, Virginia with her husband. In 1983, she wrote a biography of her friend and mentor, Ruth Bell Graham (wife of evangelist Billy Graham). This earned her the Medallion Award.

About Patricia (Daniels) Cornwell
(photo by John Earle) Patricia Cornwell was born June 9th 1956 in Miami, Florida to Marilyn ("Pat") and Sam Daniels. Her father was an appellate attorney, her mother a secretary. The parents divorced and Marilyn and the three children (Patricia and two brothers) moved to Montreat, North Carolina, when she was seven. Ruth and Billy Graham lived two miles down the road and it was Ruth Graham who once gave her a leather-bound journal and told her to write. She transferred from King College, Tennessee to Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. After graduating she married her former English professor (Charles Cornwell who is seventeen years her senior) and newly married she started as a reporter for the Charlotte Observer in 1979. Soon she became a police reporter and in 1984 she took a job in the Virginia medical examiner's office. For six years she worked at the morgue, first as a technical writer, then as a computer analyst. She also volunteered to be a city cop and got her first taste of community policing. In 1988 she decided she didn't want to be a preacher's wife and she and her husband divorced in 1989. In 1983 Patricia Cornwell wrote A Time for Remembering (1983), a biography of Ruth Bell Graham, wife of the evangelist Billy Graham. This was her first book and it is hard to find in second-hand book shops (I've seen a less-than-perfect copy offered for $75). A new version: "Ruth, a Portrait: The Ruth Bell Graham Story" was published by Doubleday in September 1997. ISBN: 0385488793

Telegraph Read More: Dr. Staci Gruber Patricia Cornwell Scarpetta Staci Gruber ... Comments Crime novelist Patricia Cornwell sat with the UK's Telegraph for a lengthy interview. Generally private, the best-selling author opened up about her 2005 wedding to Dr. Staci Gruber: "Like Scarpetta [Cornwell's protagonist], I finally feel rooted somewhere. I feel a sense of responsibility and stability that I didn't have before. I hadn't been in a long-term relationship since I got divorced in 1988 and it's hard to live that way. Being with someone who is smart and gives good advice adds tremendously wonderful elements to your life.
"What happened was that I went to Harvard to research neuroscience and was directed to meet with Dr Gruber because she's so eminently respected. It was one of those things: you meet someone when you're not looking. I've never been a soapbox person for gay rights, but now I'm in a same-sex marriage I tend to be more open, because I am outraged that it should be illegal in other states."
