His work has sold more than five million copies in nine languages. His most famous character is the rifleman Richard Sharpe – an embittered, slightly villainous career soldier whose fortunes are followed through the late 18th century and early 19th. Cornwell’s journey to writing was a long one. He was born in 1944 the illegitimate son of an English woman and Canadian airman. His mother was forced to give him up for adoption when he was a few weeks old and, after a short spell in an orphanage, he was brought up by an Essex couple who were members of the religious group “The Peculiar People”. He trained first to be a teacher and then joined the BBC as a researcher on Nationwide. He had a successful career in television but, when he met the woman he wanted to marry, he had to leave it all to join her in America. Refused a Green Card, he reassured her that he would support them both by writing historical novels – an ambition he’d held for years but had yet to realize. On the strength of the first book he was offered a contract for an entire series and, eventually, his character Richard Sharpe was brought to life by Sean Bean.

Bernard Cornwell interview
Bernard Cornwell had been a history teacher and a BBC director before his life changed with the advent of the Sharpe books. So what inspired him to write that fateful first book and just what did he really make of Sean Bean in the part? We asked the man himself... What kick-started the writing of Sharpe's Eagle, the very first Sharpe book? I was working for the BBC at the time, and was actually working on some current affairs programmes with a young Gavin Esler. The shoot involved a number of American travel agents visiting the UK, and as soon as I set eyes on one of them - a ravishing blonde - I turned to Gavin and said "I'm going to marry that woman one day!" Rather inconveniently she was actually married with kids at the time, but we struck up a friendship anyway and were able to become romantically involved after she was divorced. However, she was unable to move to the UK because of her children, so I agreed to go over to the States. The trouble was getting a work permit, but you don't need one to write novels. So I said, "Don't worry, I'll write a novel!"

Last Update: 01 September 1997 On August 29, 1997 Bernard Cornwell very kindly agreed to answer questions from members of the Bean Zine mailing list. Here are some of those questions, and his responses. Q: To what do you attribute your relatively subdued success in the USA? I think you mentioned that your books don't sell that well here so you don't often do book signing tours. I've only seen hardcover copies of the books in two libraries and a few trade paperbacks in bookstores. Since I've read everything of yours I can find, I'm curious. BC: I'm curious too, but don't really know the answer. I guess I just don't appeal to American readers as I do to British ones. That's understandable with the Sharpe series, which is very British based, and maybe that image sticks. Q: Has there ever been any Hollywood interest in making a movie from any of your works? BC: Not a nibble. Not enough children in my books, and those that there are, get killed. Q: I came across something while reading a book last week and it drove me nuts because I can't remember where I heard this before. The book was about the Napoleonic Wars and there was a chapter in there about a Captain John Kincaid and his regiment, the 95th Rifles. Was this the guy you based Sharpe on? This guy was in all the same battles as Sharpe, and sure sounded like our boy - bold, brash, brave, etc. I swear somewhere in the past year, someone, somewhere in SharpeLand has mentioned this.

The Paula Gordon Show Chaos and Order
Bernard Cornwell
... historical fiction writer. Internationally acclaimed for his "Richard Sharpe" series, the Grail Quest series, the Nathaniel Starbuck Chronicles, the Warlord Trilogy and many other novels including Redcoat Stonehenge , and Gallows Thief , Mr. Cornwell has begun a new series. In The Last Kingdom , he begins the adventures of Saxon/English King Alfred the Great, to whose time Mr. Cornwell trace his own Northumbrian family roots. He and his wife live on Cape Cod, MA. W hat do men fight over? Land and resources, says internationally admired historical novelist Bernard Cornwell. And women. That's the first layer of Mr. Cornwell's latest series, focused on King Alfred the Great. It starts with The Last Kingdom , in which he tells rousing stories of what he calls men behaving badly. He will take us through three generations. Along the way, he'll revitalize Alfred's daughter who's been lost to history even though she was a heroine and led armies against the Danes. There's a second universal theme Mr. Cornwell has set in motion in this new series. Chaos versus order. Marauding lawless warrior Danes versus pious Saxon king Alfred the law-giver and his conscript farmer-soldiers. The Cavaliers versus the Puritans. Accountants versus NASCAR drivers. It's an ago-old battle, Mr. Cornwell believes. With some apparent sense of resignation, perhaps regret, Mr. Cornwell concludes that in the end, it is the pious bores who win. Always.
