Extant are some 25 short biographies and some scattered fragments. Although a Roman, the bulk of his surviving lives are of Greek historical figures. Nepos is generally taken to task for poor composition and factual errors. His treatment is never as full as that of Plutarch or Suetonius. The fact remains, however, that his are the earliest biographies to survive from antiquity. He always preseves a few facts not found elsewhere, and where other sources are lacking, his lives are often critical. I might add that he is very easy and pleasant to read, in English as in Latin. Nepos offers an enriching experience to the student of Latin. He also, however, leaves more pitfalls for the translator than one might expect. Although it is most welcome that Nepos' latest translator, Michaela Pfeiffer [Pf.], has now brought him into the well-known German series Sammlung Tusculum , the translation under review is regrettably a disappointment. Sammlung Tusculum is the German equivalent to the Loeb Classical Library . Each volume offers a Latin text with facing German translation followed by an Anhang consisting of an introduction to the author, endnotes to the translation, bibliography, and an index of names. I will discuss them in order. The source of Pf.'s Latin text is nowhere revealed. To judge by the passages I compared, the text is not completely consistent with any of the editions listed in the bibliography (417). If Pf. has taken it upon herself to produce a new edition, she says nothing to alert the reader to the fact. Pf. does not include the fragments of Nepos' lost works.

His book, De viris illustribus (c. 34 b.c.e., before 27 b.c.e.; On Famous Men , 1853), which survives in part, contains biographical sketches rather than critical history. Originally, it consisted of at least sixteen books: eight pairs, of which one book was on Roman characters and the other on non-Roman characters. The pairs of books included such categories as generals, historians, and kings. The works were designed to praise the subjects and elucidate morals. Of these lives, only twenty-four remain, including the lives of historians Titus Pomponius Atticus and Cato the Censor .
