LIFE:

Fellow author Michael Cart has said: “Robert Cormier is the single most important writer in the whole history of young adult literature.”
Cormier was born January 17, 1925, and lived his entire life in Fitchburg and Leominster , MA, which became “Monument,” the setting for his novels. He never moved further than three miles from the house where he was born. He grew up in the French Hill neighborhood, so named for the French Canadians who had moved to the area to work in the factories around the turn of the century. His father was one of these workers, an immigrant’s son who worked “in the shops” for 44 years while raising his family.
Cormier grew up surrounded by family, living for a time in an apartment building owned by his grandfather. As his family increased – he was the second of eight children - they moved to other houses, always remaining within French Hill. Outside of his family, though, he was a bit of a loner – not particularly good at games, etc. He told one interviewer that his favorite place as a child was the library and told another, “I always felt that I didn’t belong”.
He attended St. Cecilia’s Grammar School, where he received his first outside encouragement as a writer when a seventh-grade teacher (a nun) complimented a poem that he had written, contributing to his sense of himself as a writer.

The streets were bleak. The playgrounds were bleak. But home was always warm. My mother and father had a great relationship. I always felt 'safe' there. Robert Cormier I can't remember a time when I wasn't trying to get something down on paper. Robert Cormier I can't remember a time, really, when I haven't been a writer. Tenderness, by Robert Cormier
August 24, 2007 by Todd Let’s end the week with another Cormier book, that is soon to be a major motion picture starring Russell Crowe. Eric Poole started out just killing small animals, kittens and birds, but soon finds himself in a juvenile detention center for killing his parents. Eric claims he was being abused and the murders were in self-defense. Lori Cranston, a 15 year old runaway is drawn to Eric. She met him in passing a few years before Eric was arrested and wants to meet him again upon release from the detention home. Eric and Lori are brought together and the tension begins. With a veteran police officer watching Eric, waiting for his one slip back to a life of crime Eric finds companionship in Lori and then in a Cormier-esque ending lives are shattered. Review
This is a frightening novel which, like many of Cormier's books, makes the reader as afraid to go forward as his main character is. We are with Adam as he rides his bike from Monument, Massachusetts toward a hospital in Vermont where his father is. Intersperced with the exhausting and sometimes frightening trip, we read excerpts from a taped interview between Adam and an enigmatic interviewer. Through these tapes, we find the horror that has existed for Adam and we learn of his eventual fate. It is also revealed, on those tapes, that Adam has been and is being heavily medicated, that his memories are full of gaps and that this interviewer, for reasons of his own, is helping him work his way through those gaps. Eventually we learn what the interviewer recommends for Adam's future. Our realization that all of this is still impersonal, that the powers-that-be can have acted so callously, is the deeper horror in the book.

Duel at High Noon: A Replay of Cormier's Works
Kathy Neal Headley Today's baby boomers were reared in times of romanticism. Wars were won, the American Dream was a real possibility, and even the turbulent 60s were colored with strokes of idealism. According to formula, literature for adolescents through the 50s and into the 60s was didactic and predictable, with the teenaged protagonist eventually adopting behavior that was acceptable to adults. Given such a vision of the world, one can comprehend why Robert Cormier has faced criticism for his portrayals of good versus evil in many of his works. His books are avidly read by teenagers, but many parents have difficulty with his dark view of life and negative portrayal of humanity ( Ellis, 1985 ). All too often, parents are protective and controlling of their children's lives, but kids want books to reflect reality. They know that the "good guys don't always win" ( West, 1987
