Robert Cormier His Books Other Information Other Web Sites I n 1991, Robert Cormier received the MAE Award. The committee cited his novels: The Chocolate War I Am the Cheese , and After the First Death He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts. Cormier says, “I was a skinny kid living in a ghetto-type neighborhood wanting the world to know that I existed.” When his own children were small, he worked as a newspaper reporter and wrote at night. He writes a story over and over until he is satisfied. “With each novel, I fill a shopping bag with material that has been rewritten.” He wants to make the story as true as possible, yet censors often dislike his books, and this surprises him. The teen years, explains Cormier, are not a “peppermint world of fun and frolic.” He tries to show the “strength of young adults—their resilience, their ability to absorb the blows teenage life delivers.” One time a woman who hated his books met Cormier and instead of finding a monster, she saw who he really was—an ordinary guy trying to be “one of the good guys, sometimes failing, but trying anyway.”

Robert Cormier Robert Cormier was born in 1925 in French Hill, a French-Canadian neighborhood of Leominster, Massachusetts, and has lived in Leominster all his life. The second of eight children, Robert enjoyed a happy childhood in the nest of his close-knit family and community. His family provided him a haven from the outer world. Cormier didn't fare well in the streets of his neighborhood, where ballplaying ability counted for more than his love of books. He attended St. Celia's Parochial Grammar School, where some of the nuns gave him a terrible time. When he was in eighth grade, he watched in horror from his classroom window as his own house caught fire and burned. His teacher refused to let him go to see if his family was safe until he had said the requisite prayers. This incident enraged him for years afterward.
One of the nuns, however, made a remark that changed the way he thought of himself. His seventh-grade teacher read one of his poems and told him that he was a writer. He believed her, and continued to think of himself as one. Later, a teacher at Fitchburg State College was so impressed with one of Cormier's stories that she submitted it to a magazine; it became his first published work.

Cormier's reputation as a fine writer of Young Adult fiction is widely acknowledged. Beyond that, he deserves recognition as a major writer of the past 25 years, period. His omission from such books as The Oxford Companion to American Literature is heinous.
You've lived the whole of your life in Leominster, and have been in the same house for over 40 years. Why? I think I like that sense of security and that sense ofit sounds like a clichebut roots. When I was young growing up, I thought that to be a writer I had to travel the world, and have all these experiences. Then at some point... I think it goes back to the adventures of Tom Sawyer... that was the first book I really ever owned that wasn't a text book... my godmother gave it to me when I was 11 or 12. Tom Sawyer with his adventures, painting the fence... I sorta realised that there was drama right there in my own neighbourhood. I've thought about that since. At the time it occurred it wasn't a lightning bolt, but I've always been conscious of not having to travel that far. The legends I heard when I was a child, the strikes at the shops were very dramatic to me. Then I'd read

R OBERT DE CORMIER acted as music director of the New York Choral Society for seventeen years and under his leadership the group became renowned for its high standard of excellence in choral singing and unique variety of programming. As Music Director Emeritus he guest conducted a performance of the Verdi Requiem in 1990, the Berlioz Requiem at St. Paul's Cathedral, New York City in 1992 and the premiere of a commissioned work, the Missa Iona in 1993 at St. Bartholomew's in New York City.
In 1995 he began a two year project based on the music produced in the concentration camp in Terezin, Czechoslovakia. With funds generously provided by the Vermont State Legislature and Vermont Arts Council, the Vermont Council on the Humanities and the Spielberg Foundation (this was the first grant awarded by this Foundation), as well as many individual contributions, it was possible for Mr. De Cormier to mount and conduct productions of two operas from Terezin; Brundibar , a children's opera by Hans Krasa, and The Emperor of Atlantis , written by Viktor Ullmann. The operas toured throughout Vermont, Massachussetts, and New Hampshire, culminating in a performance at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. They were the bookends of a project whose initiation was a performance of Verdi's

American novelist, short story writer, editor, and journalist. Cormier writes of individuals in conflict with social and political forces. His protagonists often find themselves in situations which place them in direct opposition to powerful adversaries, both identified and unknown. These protagonists eventually come to realize, as does Adam in I Am the Cheese (1977), that in order to survive they must learn to stand alone. Without moralizing, Cormier's novels stress the importance of self-reliance and self-respect. His combination of realism, sensitivity, and originality has made him popular with both readers and critics and has moved him to the forefront of contemporary young adult novelists. Many of Cormier's subjects stem from his experiences as a newspaper reporter and human interest columnist. For instance, the models for Gracie of

(Tip 1) Individually or as a group, choose words that are unknown to you from the list. To help memorize, look up and write down the definition, part of speech and use the new word in a sentence of more than 6 words.
(Tip 2) Write a story, postcard, letter or journal entry using 15-25 words in context.
(Tip 3) Working individually or in a group, pair synonyms and/or antonyms. Determine how many words are adjectives, nouns and verbs.

    Robert Cormier
Robert Cormier was born on January 17, 1925, in Leominster, MA. Lucien Joseph and Irma Margaret (Collins) Cormier had eight children. Robert was their second. Lucien was a factory worker. They lived in French Hill, the French-Canadian section of Leominster, in a triple-decker. Like many families during the Depression, Cormier's family moved many times during his life but never out of French Hill. They moved frequently in order to afford rent during the Depression, and they also moved as the family grew. Even when he moved out on his own, he never lived farther than three miles from the house he was born in. Robert attended a private catholic school, St. Cecilia's Parochial School. His experiences at the school shaped his life in a few different ways. He first wrote a poem in sixth grade; a nun encouraged him to write. That was the first time he considered being a writer. When he was in eighth grade, he could see that his family's triple-decker on Laurel St. was on fire from the classroom window. The sister would not allow him to leave and check on his family until he had recited on the rosary. Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire. This incident caused him to have some bitter feelings toward the church for many years.
