Despite this, her works were collected by members of the British Royal Family , and by Winston and Randolph Churchill , amongst others. Professional critics deplored her books. Her origins are not known for certain, but she was probably the illegitimate daughter of Dr. Charles Mackay and his mistress, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Mills, whom Dr. Mackay married after his first wife died. After her first book, A Romance of Two Worlds , was published in 1886, she became the best selling author in England, and the favorite of Queen Victoria , who ordered a collection of all Marie's books. Despite the savage attacks of critics, her books often broke sales records. She was the only author invited to the coronation of Edward VII, and counted among her friends Mark Twain, Ouida, the Empress Frederick of Germany, and many other writers and members of royalty. Tennyson wrote her praises for her work Ardath (1889), a book which did not sell very well relatively, but the one Marie had always considered her best. After Marie moved to Stratford-on-Avon in 1899, she crusaded to preserve Shakespeare's shrine in the Church of the Holy Trinity and worked to prevent some cottages once owned by Shakespeare's descendants from being demolished for a Carnegie library. She also helped establish Harvard House for visiting students of Harvard University. She bought and restored a 16th-century house, Mason Croft, which is now the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham. She published a pamphlet to encourage British people to visit Stratford-on-Avon.

Corelli, Marie (1855-1924) The popular English novelist Marie Corelli is now known chiefly as a camp figure who inspired E. F. Benson's Lucia. Although she strove to conceal her origins through numerous fictions, Corelli was born Mary (or Minnie) Mackay in Perth, Scotland, in 1855, the natural daughter of Dr. Charles Mackay, a minor literary figure who married her mother, a servant, in 1864. Sponsor Message.
While in her twenties, she pursued a brief career as a concert pianist and assumed the fantastic, self-created persona of Marie Corelli, "a true Italian" descended from the seventeenth-century Venetian composer Arcangelo Corelli. Subsequently, she turned to the more lucrative venture of writing fiction. Her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds (1886), combines science fiction and occultism in examining such disparate notions as out-of-body time travel, moral didacticism, and "personal electricity." After the moderate success of this initial venture, she produced, among other works, the best sellers The Soul of Lilith Barabbas, a Dream of the World's Tragedy

Marie Corelli
Profile
Novelist, daughter of Charles Mackay, a Scottish poet and song writer. Mary spent her youth in Mickleham, Surrey before moving to London in 1882. She became a talented pianist, using the name Marie Corelli for performances, but turned to writing romantic fiction using the same pseudonym. A romance of two worlds (1886) was her first published novel and she enjoyed popular success from Thelma (1887) onwards, particularly with Barabbas (1893) and The sorrows of Satan (1895). In 1901 she moved to Stratford-upon-Avon , purchasing Mason Croft, a house reputed to have belonged to the daughter of William Shakespeare. Mary Mackay, the person, was somewhat larger than life, as was Marie Corelli, the author. She became a well known figure in the town, entering into local issues with some gusto (see Marie Corelli and the Stratford-upon-Avon controversy ), and had her own gondola on the River Avon. Her knack for drawing attention to herself was coupled with her own self-determination and self-appreciation. Her constant companion, Bertha Vyver, wrote an appreciative memoir which was published in 1940. Her style has been described as over-written exotic romantic fantasy but it was immensely popular, helped by publicity courted by this colourful author. One of her most famous ardent readers was Queen Victoria who seems to have been impressed by the depth to her work. Many critics hated her and the biography written by Thomas Coates and R.S. Warren Bell, published in her lifetime, tries rather too hard to defend her:-
