This is actually one of my favorite lists because the author of the list justifies each book, with mostly interesting comments. This is the list I would most likely go to after the Random House List. 1. Nabokov, Vladimir. Pale Fire
The most audaciously conceived novel of the centuryand the most perfectly executethis is also the book whose existence could have been the most difficult to anticipate in the year 1900. 2. Joyce, James. Ulysses
Not so much the beginning of anything as the culmination of the great 19th century symbolic realist tradition 3. Pynchon, Thomas.
Like Ulysses 4. Coover, Robert. The Public Burning
A book controversial enough that its publisher almost immediately took it out of print (where stayed for over 15 years), this novel featured a surprisingly sympathetic Richard Nixon as its principle narrator and used the Rosenberg case as a means of examining just about everything worth examining about America during the McCarthy era; excessive and encyclopedic, dazzling in its range of styles, bitterly angry and bitingly humorous, this is the most brilliant and original "political novel" ever published in America.

Bombonera, the Candybox, they seemed to have sold ten tickets for every square foot of space. We had to go an hour and a half early just to squeeze in at all. No way to sit, no chance to go for drinks, by the time the matches started it was even hard to breathe. My teenaged son spent one entire game hanging over an exit from a stair railing. Each day we said: if it's not bloody sensational, we'll go to a bar somewhere and watch it on TV, this is crazy. And each day we stayed.
It is perhaps this passionate commitment, together with that peculiar but universal tendency of a people to identify its national interest with the success or failure of its soccer team, that most reminded us of the last time we were sitting up here, in the wind and rain, watching that night game that was more than a game between the destape (the popping of the cork, the lifting of the lid) which saw the almost instantaneous nationwide demolition of the structures of Francoism, broad political amnesty, the legalization of the Communist Party, free trade unions, the publishing explosion and the Pornographic Revolution, the first general elections since the days of the Republic, and in Catalunya the new cultural

    About This Page
Regrettably, I have been spared little time of late for the development of this site. While I hope and expect that I will be returning to a heavier commitment to it soon now, in the meantime I thought to augment the site with a list of authors and books that I suspectfrom considerable examination of others' comments on them (and on who those "others" are and how credible they are)might plausibly end up, once I have read them, being added to the main lists at this site. Let me make it clear that I am not exactly "prejudging" these books, and that in consequence this list is unlike the main lists, in that it is not a list of recommendations but rather just a list of intriguing possibilities . As time (and, in the case of some rarer books, budget) allows, I will read these and either add them to the actual "recommended" lists or just discard them. I set forth this list only to assist those fewif anywho occasionally look to this site for some hints on new realms to explore in their reading. This list is basically just a prettified and annotated copy of my personal "buy and read" list, but that list has some nuancing worth mention. Although I intend to examine everything on this list, I do not reckon equal probabilities of success for everything on it. Some authors soundto the extent that we can deduce reliably from existing comment and reviewlike they are virtual locks; most just sound pretty interesting; and a few I am more or less skeptical about, but will examine owing to the total weight of others' critical approval. I have used color coding, explained farther below, to mark out each author's status in this list. While it may seem curious, or even hypocritical, to segregate authors whose works I admittedly have not personally reviewed, the distinction is of value, at least to me, in that it creates a triage order in which to attack the list; and having set up those distinctions, I simply pass them on for what they may, or may not, be worth to others.

Critical Article Issue III Contents Articles This Collapsing of Boundaries: Fiction and Reality in Robert Coover’s “The Phantom of the Movie Palace” and Buster Keaton’s Sherlock, Jr. Nina Zehr Daemen College Amherst, NY While discussing his admiration for Buster Keaton’s work in his 1927 silent film, Sherlock, Jr. , Robert Coover observes that: Most filmmakers are unabashed tricksters, bunkoing their gullible audiences with their cunning optical hocus-pocus, not least among their wiles the illusion of the frame . . . . But in his famous frame-within-a-frame sequence in Sherlock Junior , [Buster] Keaton [hangs] the frame in the light, and moreover he disturbs its integrity, jumping in and out of it, challenging not only its reality but the reality of the world in which it, in another frame, exists. ("Phantom" 69) The sequence Coover refers to depicts a movie projectionist, played by Keaton, who falls asleep while projecting a film and dreams that he has entered it; fiction and reality merge as a real character exists within a fictional context. Coover pays homage to Keaton’s movie, and this sequence in particular, in his short story “The Phantom of the Movie Palace,” exploring the theme of fiction and reality colliding using many of the same techniques that Keaton employed.

The End of Books By ROBERT COOVER @NYTimes n the real world nowadays, that is to say, in the world of video transmissions, cellular phones, fax machines, computer networks, and in particular out in the humming digitalized precincts of avant-garde computer hackers, cyberpunks and hyperspace freaks, you will often hear it said that the print medium is a doomed and outdated technology, a mere curiosity of bygone days destined soon to be consigned forever to those dusty unattended museums we now call libraries. Indeed, the very proliferation of books and other print-based media, so prevalent in this forest-harvesting, paper-wasting age, is held to be a sign of its feverish moribundity, the last futile gasp of a once vital form before it finally passes away forever, dead as God. Which would mean of course that the novel, too, as we know it, has come to its end. Not that those announcing its demise are grieving. For all its passing charm, the traditional novel, which took center stage at the same time that industrial mercantile democracies arose and which Hegel called "the epic of the middle-class world" is perceived by its would-be executioners as the virulent carrier of the patriarchal, colonial, canonical, proprietary, hierarchical and authoritarian values of a past that is no longer with us.
