Susan Urban is a writer of story songs and humorous "slice of life" songs. She accompanies her singing on guitar, six string banjo, mountain dulcimer, and hand percussion instruments. Their goal in this new band is to present carefully arranged versions of old and new songs addressing the widest possible range of human experience, complete with vocal harmony, intricate instrumentation and thoughtful stagecraft. February Sky continues this tradition.

Victory In an interview from her home in Connecticut, Cooper tells BookPage she got the idea for the book after reading a true-life account of Lord Nelson's funeral. According to the report, the sailors in the funeral procession had torn apart the flag draped over the admiral's casket because they could not bear letting it be sealed into the crypt for eternity. "Their affection for him was so powerful," says Cooper. "It started me thinking, what if one of those sailors was a young boy? And what if his piece of the flag lived longer than he did and found its way to another child?" Cooper got her start as a writer at a very early age. "I was born a writer," she says. Growing up in rural England during World War II, Cooper found it easier to cope with books than with people and the world around her. During those years, writing was a very private thing to her. So much so, that when a well-meaning uncle complimented her on a book that she had written, illustrated and purposely kept hidden, Cooper burst into tears and destroyed the book. She was 10 years old at the time.

For most people, certainly in the so-called Western world, the right of women to vote on a basis of equality with men seems obvious. A century ago this was not the case, even in America, and it required a long, arduous, and sometimes painful struggle before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920. Why then, take steps to make available through the Gutenberg Project an article arguing AGAINST the right of women to votean article written by a woman? There are two reasons for doing so. The first is that Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813-1894) was no ordinary woman. She was educated in Europe and extremely well read; she was the daughter and literary assistant of James Fenimore Cooper, America's first internationally recognized novelist; and she was a naturalist and essayist of great talent whose "nature diary" of her home village at Cooperstown, published as "Rural Hours" in 1850, has become a classic of early American environmental literature. Yet Susan Fenimore Cooper argued eloquently, bringing to her task not only her deep religious feelings but also her very considerable knowledge of world history and of American society, that women should not be given the vote! Hers was not a simple defense of male dominion; her case is combined with equally eloquent arguments in favor of higher education for women, and for equal wages for equal work.
