Democratic Origins and Revolutionary Writers, 1776-1820: James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851)
Index James Fenimore Cooper, like Irving, evoked a sense of the past and gave it a local habitation and a name. In Cooper, though, one finds the powerful myth of a golden age and the poignance of its loss. While Irving and other American writers before and after him scoured Europe in search of its legends, castles, and great themes, Cooper grasped the essential myth of America: that it was timeless, like the wilderness. American history was a trespass on the eternal; European history in America was a reenactment of the fall in the Garden of Eden. The cyclical realm of nature was glimpsed only in the act of destroying it: The wilderness disappeared in front of American eyes, vanishing before the oncoming pioneers like a mirage. This is Cooper's basic tragic vision of the ironic destruction of the wilderness, the new Eden that had attracted the colonists in the first place. Personal experience enabled Cooper to write vividly of the transformation of the wilderness and of other subjects such as the sea and the clash of peoples from different cultures. The son of a Quaker family, he grew up on his father's remote estate at Otsego Lake (now Cooperstown) in central New York State. Although this area was relatively peaceful during Cooper's boyhood, it had once been the scene of an Indian massacre. Young Fenimore Cooper grew up in an almost feudal environment. His father, Judge Cooper, was a landowner and leader. Cooper saw frontiersmen and Indians at Otsego Lake as a boy; in later life, bold white settlers intruded on his land.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
I have found it better not to insist on Cooper's formal powers at the outset, nor even on his obvious importance as an innovator and initiator in American fiction. Rather, it is effective to invite the students to discuss the substantive issues that arise in a reading of Cooper. Their importance and typicality in the American literary experience remain alive to students in various historical transformations, and Cooper presents them in unresolved and problematic formations. While the passages selected in The Heath Anthology raise obvious and important issuesof empire, of political theory, of nature versus civilization, law, conservation, religion, race, family, American historyone Leather-Stocking novel should be studied in its entirety. Depending on where the instructor places most emphasis, The Pioneers The Last of the Mohicans , and The Deerslayer are the most accessible. In any case, any study of even the selected passages requires some "story-telling" by the instructor. The discussion of The Pioneers or other novels can become, as well, a discussion of the competing claims on the student's attention to form and content: whether form is always possible or desirable; whether the unresolved issues in history are in any sense "resolved" in works of art; how the desire for narrative or didactic closure competes with the recognition of an incomplete and problematic history and political theory. Approach questions of empire, race, progress, civilization, family, law, and power, and lead back from them to the literary issues.

Cooper, James Fenimore Biography
James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) First major American novelist, whose best-known tales of frontier adventure include THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1826), an adventure story set in the Lake Champlain. It has been filmed several times, among others in 1936 and 1992. Through his Leatherstocking series Cooper created the archetype of the 18th-century frontiersman, Natty Bumppo. He lives free, close to nature, while the settlers bring 'civilization' that destroys the wilderness. Cooper wrote over thirty novels - he considered THE PATHFINDER (1841) and THE DEERSLAYER (1840) his best works. "Few men exhibit greater diversity, or, if we may so express it, greater antithesis of character than the native warrior of North America. In war, he is daring, boastful, cunning, ruthless, self-denying, and self-devoted; in peace, just, generous, hospitable, revengeful, superstitious, modest, and commonly chaste." (from The Last of the Mohicans James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, the son of Quakers, Judge William Cooper and Elisabeth Fenimore Cooper. His father was a representative of the 4th and 6th Congress, and had attained wealth by developing virgin land. The family moved to Cooperstown, New York, which Judge Cooper had founded. James Fenimore spent his youth partly on the family estate on the shores of Otsego Lake. He roamed in the primeval forest and developed a love of nature which marked his books. Cooper was educated in the village school, and in 1800-02 in the household of the rector of St. Peter's.

US writer, considered the first great US novelist. He wrote some 50 novels, mostly about the frontier, wilderness life, and the sea, first becoming popular with The Spy (1821). He is best remembered for his series of Leatherstocking Tales The Last of the Mohicans (1826). Still popular as adventures, his novels have been reappraised for their treatment of social and moral issues in the settling of the American frontier. Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, and grew up on the family frontier settlement of Cooperstown, New York State. He was educated in Albany and at Yale University. After being expelled from Yale he travelled as an apprentice sailor to Europe. In 1811 he married the wealthy Susan DeLancey and became a gentleman farmer, but economic problems encouraged him to write. Influenced by the historical novels of Walter Scott , he wrote The Spy The Pilot In 1826 Cooper went to Paris where he continued to write novels and books on American society, including

James Fenimore Cooper Take a man as American as can be and teach him how to write. What resultsin this caseis the first great American novelist. That is the legacy of James Fenimore Cooper. Born in Burlington, New Jersey, on September 15, 1789, Cooper was one of six surviving children out of thirteen siblings. He was the son of Quakers Elisabeth Fenimore and Judge William Cooper, a representative of the 4th and 6th Congress who had attained wealth by developing virgin land. The family moved to Cooperstown, New York, named after Cooper's father. Within a few years, William Cooper acquired a judgeship, a seat in Congress as a Federalist, and a sprawling mansion. He was kind to his tenants, but less so to his political opponents. His heavy-handed tactics in dealing with his political foes contributed to the destruction of the Federalist party in New York. When young James reached school age, his parents sent him to the local Academy for a few years before transferring him to the care of an Episcopal clergyman in Albany. The Reverend Thomas Ellison's small school offered all of the advantages to which the son of a wealthy Federalist was entitled: connections to powerful people and instruction in the grand, prejudiced style of the old country.

To carry one and the same character through five several works would seem to be a wilful over drawing on the good nature of the public, and many persons may very reasonably suppose it an act, of itself, that ought to invite a rebuke. To this natural objection, the author can only say that, if he has committed a grave fault on this occasion, his readers are in some measure answerable for it. The favorable manner in which the more advanced career, and the death of Leather Stocking were received, has created, in the mind of the author at least, a sort of necessity for giving some account of his younger days. In short the pictures, of his life, such as they are, were already so complete as to excite some little desire to see the 'study,' from which they have all been drawn. Little need be said concerning the characters and scenery of this Tale. The former are fictitious, as a matter of course; but the latter is as true to nature, as an intimate knowledge of the present appearance of the region described, and such probable conjectures concerning its ancient state as could be furnished by the imagination, enabled the writer to render it. The lake, mountains, valley and forests, are all believed to be sufficiently exact, while the river, rock and shoal are faithful transcripts from nature. Even the points exist, a little altered by civilization, but so nearly answering to the descriptions, as to be easily recognised by all who are familiar with the scenery of the particular region in question.

    Introduction
The Leatherstocking Tales, by American novelist, historian, and social critic James Fenimore Cooper, relate the adventures of frontiersman Natty Bumppo. Known as Leatherstocking, Hawkeye, and Pathfinder, among other names, Bumppo is introduced as a young man in The Deerslayer, the first novel in terms of content but the last to be published. The novels tell of his adventures living a life of freedom in the wilderness of New York and of his retreat from the advance of civilization. They end with his old age and death in the Great Plains region of the West. Reflected in the series are Cooper's views on the importance of individual freedom in society. Considered classics of American literature, the Leatherstocking Tales set the pace for future writers of western and frontier stories. They have been widely translated and portions have been dramatized on "Masterpiece Theatre." Following is a list of the five Leatherstocking Tales in chronological order of their contents as given in the tenth edition of the Wilson Fiction Catalog. All editions are available from NLS network library collections.
