Welcome to Scholastic.com Caroline B. Cooney Caroline Cooney knew in sixth grade that she wanted to be a writer when "the best teacher I ever had in my life" made writing his main focus. "He used to rip off covers from The New Yorker and pass them around and make us write a short story on whichever cover we got. I started writing then and never stopped!" When her children were young, Caroline started writing books for young people with remarkable results. She began to sell stories to Seventeen magazine and soon after began writing books. Suspense novels are her favorites to read and write. "In a suspense novel, you can count on action." To keep her stories realistic, Caroline visits many schools outside of her area, learning more about teenagers all the time. She often organizes what she calls a "plotting game," in which students work together to create plots for stories. Caroline lives in Westbrook, Connecticut and when she's not writing she volunteers at a hospital, plays piano for the school musicals and daydreams!

Caroline Cooney I had a wonderful sixth grade teacher. His name was Mr. Albert. All the girls wanted to grow up and marry him, and all the boys wanted to be just like him. Every Friday, he made us write a short story. He had a stack of covers from New Yorker magazines detailed and brightly colored, like cartoons. He'd pass them out and we'd have to write a short story to match the picture we got. I was the one in the class who never stopped.
I love to write. I love to make things up. I'm in a library or a bookstore most days of the week, because I love to be around other people's books, too. Reading and writing books takes up most of my life. Now I've added talking about books on school visits, which is all the fun and none of the work of writing.
The best part of school visits is meeting my readers, since my three children are grown now and I don't get to hang out with teenagers (although I still play the piano for the four choirs in our middle school). School visits are such a neat way to see America. When you're in Indiana one week, Oregon the next, and Louisiana after that, you go home astonished and honored to have met all those wonderful kids and their teachers.
"Where do you get your ideas?" Readers ask this question of every writer. I don't usually know. I just wake up with a mind full of ideas. But we all have great ideas; I could go to your school and brainstorm with your class, and we'd end up with a great plot, or ten of them. The hard part is turning the idea into a book.

Cooney keeps the shivers coming
Interview by Dee Ann Grand
Let's all admit it. We cringe a bit when we hear the word sequel. We hold our breath when buying one, half afraid we'll be disappointed. Well, Caroline Cooney fans, before you run out and get The Voice on the Radio , companion book to The Face on the Milk Carton and Whatever Happened to Janie? , there's something you can do. Exhale! Then, make arrangements for uninterrupted reading time. You'll need it. Cooney is a master at intertwining suspense with modern teenage issues and has mesmerized her readers with Driver's Ed (an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Booklist Children's Editors' Choice), Among Friends (a New York Public Library Best Books for the Teen Age), Twenty Pageants Later (an ALA Quick Pick for Young Adults), and the time travel novels Both Sides of Time and Out of Time Just hours before Cooney departed from her home in Connecticut for the starting point of her first international book tour, I pirated a spot in her schedule for an interview. Cooney, born in 1947, discovered her love for writing in college. Now an award-winning author, she visits schools all over the country, addressing young teens about her popular young adult novels.

    32. BCCB-Don't Get No Respect: Caroline Cooney
So what s the issue with caroline cooney? Is it that she doesn t write grimly enough even when addressing serious subjects? That she s too popular?
    http://bccb.lis.uiuc.edu/1199focus.html
    The Bulletin
of the Center for Children's Books:
Don't Get No Respect Each month we offer a focus on a particular author or artist. Sometimes we use this space to discuss a rising new talent or an established star, but we also like to celebrate those who now live on only in the rich legacy of their books.. See the archive for focus pieces from previous months.
    Caroline Cooney
So what's the issue with Caroline Cooney? Is it that she doesn't write grimly enough even when addressing serious subjects? That she's too popular? That she writes sequences about the same characters? Why, in short, does this effective and accessible author seem conspicuously absent from lists of respectable and respected writers? The lady certainly can yarn. Whether it be the soap opera drama of The Face on the Milk Carton and its attendant sequels (there's a fourth apparently coming this spring), the gothic-flavored suspense of the Both Sides of Time books, or the desperate adventure of Flight #116 Is Down! , the plots gallop along pulling readers pell-mell behind them. Perhaps there's some sort of guilt about this technique, as if teens (and adults) were supposed to be beyond that sort of pleasure and ought to be turning pages for more high-minded reasons. Surely enjoyment and compulsion are worthwhile motivations, however, and Cooney delivers those in spades. Yet she also addresses issues large and small.

    Cooney, Caroline B. Tune in anytime. Laurel-Leaf, 2001 [0-440-22798-4]
Sophie's life is like a soap opera. Her mother is strange.. likes fad things like pyramids and haunted stones (her father calls the mother a pyramidiot.) The father can't take it any more and falls in love with a new woman. Unfortunately is Sophie's sister's room mate at college. Now her father is divorcing her mother for another woman who is only a couple years older than she. Then of course, Sophie falls in love with a boy whose family owns the gravel pit where her mother's latest craze (circle of stones) resides. So much is happening in this 186 page book, it does feel like a soap opera where the reader can "Tune in anytime." It is a fun book but very different than Cooney's usual books.

Kliatt Jan, 2004 by Claire Rosser Random House, Dell Laurel-Leaf. 263p. maps. c2002. 0-440-22930-8. $5.99. JS * To quote the review of the hardcover in KLIATT, July 2002: This is the most ambitious novel I have read by Cooney. known for her ever-popular works like the series that starts with The Face on the Milk Carton. In this, she mines the Trojan War characters and events, concentrating on Helen and Paris, as seen by a young girl, Anaxandra. Other major characters are those from the legend: Andromache and Hector, Menelaus, Cassandra; and the minor ones: King Priam, Agamemnon, and numerous others. One of the few made-up-by-Cooney characters is Anaxandra, and she serves as a dramatic narrator of events with an exciting life of her own. She meets the principal characters of the Trojan War when she is rescued by Menelaus and taken into his household. There she sees his wife, the beautiful Helen, as Helen and the visitor Paris fall in love and elope, taking Menelaus's treasure and his young son with them in an act of treachery.
