CLARK COOLIDGE'S VISUAL ARTS
INTERTEXTS 1968-1976 What I'm presenting to you this evening is a thematic or thematized excerpt from a book-length project that traces Clark Coolidge's poetic trajectory from his earliest extant writings (1962) to the beginning of what I consider his mature work (1978). Just to offer a brief overview for those unacquainted with his work: Coolidge considers himself to have come of age in the 1950s, and of the many figures or cultural phenomena of that era that Coolidge considers generative for his own poetic practice I should highlight three here. First, the work of Jack Kerouac: in the short 1982 essay "A First Reading of On the Road and Later," Coolidge writes that Kerouac made the first connection for me between my life in a suddenly more generative world and the necessity of putting words down on paper. Writing came free of the books I had read and became an actual work I could do. . . . I had thought the writer must first have it all in his head and only then put it into words, but no. I began to see how it was really excitingly done: You wrote from what you didn't know toward whatever could be picked up in the act. Poetry starts here.... I have no doubt that he is the central writer of my place and time.

    Collection Description
Papers, 1970-1984.  ca. 24,750 items  Access: Open  Carol Berge, a native of New York City, studied writing, editing and magazine production at New York University and the New School for Social Research. Her early work was featured in the classic anthology, Four Young Lady Poets , ed. Leroi Jones (1962), and she has written numerous books of poetry and prose, including Poems Made of Skin An American Romance From a Soft Angle: Poems About Women (1972) and Acts of Love: An American Novel (1973). She began writing poetry in college in the late 1940's and worked in the 1950's for several New York publishers and advertising companies. In 1959, Berge traveled to Europe and began writing full-time.  In the early 1960's, Berge became involved with the group of avant-garde New York poets who presented readings at Le Deux Magots, Le Metro Cafe, and St. Marks Church. She worked closely with the poet Paul Blackburn, among other, coordinating readings and workshops in New York City. She also attended the now famous Vancouver poetry seminar at the University of British Columbia in 1962, and wrote The Vancouver Report (1964), a comprehensive response to and report of that event. In 1970 Berge founded

Creator: Harris, Marguerite, 1898 or 9-1978 Title: Marguerite Harris Papers Dates: Quantity: 2.25 linear ft. Abstract: Spanning 1901 to 1978, the Marguerite Harris Papers comprises correspondence, writings, and memorabilia of the American avant-garde poet and editor (1898 or 9-1978). An active member of the Poetry Society of America, Marguerite Harris bridged the gap between two generations of poets: the Imagist and Surrealist writers, and the Beats. News/Events Her Life ... Contact Us Rebecca Clarke achieved what she called "my one brief whiff of fame" in 1919 when her viola Sonata tied for first place in a competition sponsored by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Clarke lived much of her life in the US, although she was born and educated in Great Britain. Striking for its passion and power, her music spans a range of 20th-century styles including Impressionism, post-Romantic, and neo-Classical. Although she wrote nearly 100 works (including songs, choral works, chamber pieces and music for solo piano), only 20 pieces were published in her lifetime, and by the time of her death in 1979, at age 93, all of these were long out of print.
The goal of the Rebecca Clarke Society, Inc. is to honor the life and work of composer and violist Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) by promoting interest in her and her music. We encourage and support performances, recordings and publications, and scholarship concerning Clarke and her music. Founded in 2000, we are a recognized 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.
