Mesh: Sense, Sensuality, and the Poetry of Clark Coolidge
  • Genre(s): Experimental
  • Period: 1960s to the present
  • Lines: (from The Crystal Text
As electricity is homeless. Continental baseless.
Bones to a radiant inner. Coaxless stocking
the brittle tone, sash of stone without a cord.
You leave me out in weathers, the languages,
the footless mounts. ... To immerse one's self into the work of a poet who is as ephemeral and sensual as Clark Coolidge calls for the reader's questioning of the representation of the sexual, the sensual, the senses that make up the receptors of pleasure: touch, sight, smell, taste, and especially sound. Sound, or rather rhythm and cadence, lend a quality to the work of Coolidge that is both striking and alluring. One is rather seduced into the poem by his neologisms (carey, sonance) and surprising adjectives or nouns (popple, beryl). The context from which Coolidge writes is a "mesh," a twisting of our expectations so that "the evening ladder of thighs adhesive" becomes quite an arresting and suggestive image. Andrew Joron. The Cry at Zero: Selected Prose . Counterpath Press, 2007. Review by Joshua Marie Wilkinson Andrew JoronÕs new collection of writing, Selected Prose , gathers twenty short essays on poetics. Ambitious in scope, and scrupulous in its readings, Joron opens with a gargantuan question: ÒWhat good is poetry at a time like this?Ó and concludes that ÒWhere language fails, poetry begins.Ó Dissatisfied with comfortable conclusions and tried responses, JoronÕs inquiries are cutting, lyrical, weird, and varied. Surrealism, Breton, Bataille, and Adorno haunt this poetics heavily, but JoronÕs specters never obscure him from the task at hand: to probe into, open, and re-imagine the terrain of poetry in the twenty-first century from the zone of a minor literature. The Magnetic Fields , the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Novalis, Pound, Nathaniel MackeyÕs reading of Duncan, the death count in Afghanistan, H.D., Heraclitus, Kant, and the WTO protests in Seattle all appear in the first third of the book. If JoronÕs scope is the rich wellspring from which he draws oblique connections, more importantly it is what he does with these prodigious resources. All of the texts, authors, and ideas come to the aid of his variegated questions. And while IÕm suspicious of the adjective ÒreadableÓ (why seek normative forms in the service of new questions and ideas?), JoronÕs prose is stark, cogent, clear, and layered. Here are three examples:

Michael Gizzi Reads at Rust Belt
    by Michael Kelleher
Artvoice: Earlier in life you worked for over a decade as a licensed arborist. I notice the titles of your first three books all point to the natural world ( Bird As Avis Species of Intoxication ). Do you see any connection between your poetry and your life among trees? Michael Gizzi: I did work for many years as an arborist or tree surgeon, as it’s more commonly known; I knew one character who referred to himself as a dendrologist! I studied arbor culture at the Bartlett School of Tree Surgery in Stamford, Connecticut. Bartlett had its laboratories in North Carolina, as well as offices in 48 states. This was 30 years ago. Upon receiving my MFA from Brown (I had already begun apprenticing with a “tree jockey” named Dave Sweet), I continued my studies at Bartlett. Having always loved trees—living in the Northeast—and the outdoors in general, I soon got involved with athletics in a big way; one could get away from the pressures of home. After years of college I longed like Whitman to “lean and loaf at my ease.” For me this took the form of tree climbing and every facet of tree maintenance: from bark tracing to espalier to feeding and takedowns. I remember reading “The Nut Brown Maid” by John Ashbery in Poetry Chicago while taking my lunch in the cab of a big tree truck; I also got through
