He was one of seven children born to Marine Colonel Donald Conroy, of Chicago and the former Frances "Peggy" Peck of Georgia. Conroy's stories have been heavily influenced by his upbringing and by tragedies in his family over the years. His father, a military pilot who flew nuclear weapons, used both physical and psychological violence against his children, and the pain of a youth growing up in such a harsh environment is evident in Conroy's novels, particularly The Great Santini . The military life also pushed the family from post to post, and Conroy claims to have moved 23 times before he was 18. His association with Beaufort, South Carolina began when he was 15 and had already been in two high schools elsewhere. As he started again in Beaufort, he determined to change his feeling of rootlessness and make a home for himself in Beaufort. While living in Orlando, Florida

Pat Conroy
BIO
Pat Conroy was born on October 26, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, to a young career military officer from Chicago and a Southern beauty from Alabama, whom Pat often credits for his love of language. He was the first of seven children.
Since the family had to move many times to different military bases around the South, Pat changed schools frequently, finally attending the Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, South Carolina, upon his father's insistence. While still a student, he wrote and then published his first book, THE BOO, a tribute to a beloved teacher.
After graduation, Conroy taught English in Beaufort, where he met and married a young woman with two children, a widow of the Vietnam War. He then accepted a job teaching underprivileged children in a one-room schoolhouse on Daufuskie Island, a remote island off the South Carolina shore. After a year, Pat was fired for his unconventional teaching practicessuch as his unwillingness to allow corporal punishment of his studentsand for his general lack of respect for the school's administration. Conroy evened the score when he exposed the racism and appalling conditions his students endured with publication of THE WATER IS WIDE in 1972. The book won Conroy a humanitarian award from the National Education Association and was made into the feature film

B I O G R A P H Y Pat Conroy's bestselling novels have made the Atlanta-born writer one of the most highly praised, most widely-known Georgia authors of the past half-century.
Donald Patrick Conroy grew up as the oldest son of an autocratic military man and a mother who instilled in him a love of literature and language. His father's harsh emotional and physical and violence toward the family became "the central fact of my art and my life." Torn by conflicting loyalties and emotions, Conroy's heroes rebel against oppressive situations and institutions that are ruled by exclusive, rigid concepts of manhood, school and race. Meanwhile, they struggle to survive family tragedy past and present, and attempt to emerge from the emotional and external turmoils intact, with a sense wounded and imperfect of worth and belonging. Conroy has identified Thomas Wolfe as an early, influential literary model, and critics typically note how, like Wolfe, Conroy favors expansive, lyrical prose and his stories center upon family relationships that are typically laced with a strong (identifiably Southern) sense of place. When he was in high school, Conroy's family finally settled in Beaufort, South Carolina, and the low country "Coastal Kingdom" between Charleston and Savannah which the author has adopted as his home usually plays a prominent role in his works. The Boo , his first book, was an admittedly amateur effort composed as a tribute to a beloved assistant commandant at the Charleston military college that he attended, The Citadel. Conroy's second work

McAlister Field House The Lords of Discipline and I tried to think of a line or words that would sum up better than anything how I felt and how other people feel about this college. I wanted it to be something ringing and affirmative, something true, something to be true for every person who has ever gone through the long gray line. I came up with this line, "I wear the ring." I think it is the best line I have ever written and the best English sentence I am capable of writing. I love that phrase. I love that sentence. Thirty-four years ago I sat in this field house. My mother and father, my six brothers and sisters, sitting in the audience as your parents are sitting now. My parents—it was their proudest day. My mother wept when I came off [the stage] that day. She wept so hard, and I said, "Mom, what’s wrong?" And she said, "Son, you are the first person in my family who has ever graduated from college, and you did it at The Citadel." And she said, "the best college in America." Let me tell you something about that mother. Here’s is my mother’s socioeconomic status exactly. Everything you need to know about my family [you can learn] from her mother’s family name. My grandfather, Jasper Catholic Peak; his brother, Cicero. Then there’s Vashtye, Taleatha, Clyde, Pluma. And my favorite—I was cleaning up a grave with my grandmother, Stanny, and I came across this name, "Jerry Mire Peak"—okay, that’s Jerry Mire—M-I-R-E Peak. And I said, "Stanny, who is he named after?" And she said, "He is named after the prophet Jerrymire."

As a result, we know a whole lot more about the thrill of victory than the agony of defeat. Pat Conroy didn't set out to rectify that inequity by writing My Losing Season , a painfully detailed memoir of his senior year on the 1966-67 Citadel Bulldogs basketball squad that soldiered through an ignominious 8-17 season. Call it a requiem for all the runners-up who, like Conroy, turned defeat on the playing field into victory in other aspects of their lives. As a fast, street-hardened 5-foot-10 point guard, Conroy was a fiery competitor who always believed he could play above his physical limitations and frequently did. Like his teammates, Conroy didn't lose well. Unlike the others, however, he found a way to learn something from each defeat that would make him a better ballplayer. His steely resolve in the face of such a spirit-crushing season ultimately gave him the self-confidence to become one of America's best-loved writers. If losing builds character, Pat Conroy is your poster boy for also-rans.

The Collective Works of Pat Conroy Once upon a time, I had grand plans for this site. However, real life interviened and I was unable to fulfill my original vision.
And while I remain a fan of Mr. Conroy's fiction (for the most part), I find that his political drift with age makes me very sad. I understand and respect the journey that has taken him on a path of increasing conservatism, however since his deeply held political convictions were one of the things I have always loved most about his work, I feel less personal affinity towards his essential statement now than I used to... which unfortunately impacts my over-all appreciation for his work, as I am primarily a political creature by nature.
This saddens me, but I also recognize that change is a natural side effect of the human experience. Of course, despite this change, I continue wish Mr. Conroy all the best, and wholeheartedly support his literary endeavours.
