The Nigger of the Narcissus
by Joseph Conrad
Download as an .rtf file It is otherwise with the artist. It is only some such train of thought, or rather of feeling, that can in a measure explain the aim of the attempt, made in the tale which follows, to present an unrestful episode in the obscure lives of a few individuals out of all the disregarded multitude of the bewildered, the simple and the voiceless. For, if any part of truth dwells in the belief confessed above, it becomes evident that there is not a place of splendor or a dark corner of the earth that does not deserve, if only a passing glance of wonder and pity. The motive then, may be held to justify the matter of the work; but this preface, which is simply an avowal of endeavor, cannot end herefor the avowal is not yet complete. The sincere endeavor to accomplish that creative task, to go as far on that road as his strength will carry him, to go undeterred by faltering, weariness or reproach, is the only valid justification for the worker in prose. And if his conscience is clear, his answer to those who in the fullness of a wisdom which looks for immediate profit, demand specifically to be edified, consoled, amused; who demand to be promptly improved, or encouraged, or frightened, or shocked, or charmed, must run thus:My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word to make you hear, to make you feelit is, before all, to make you see. Thatand no more, and it is everything. If I succeed, you shall find there according to your deserts: encouragement, consolation, fear, charmall you demandand, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask.

Artese, Brian. "Speech Was of No Use": Conrad, a New Journalism, and the Critical Abjection of Testimony." Novel: A Forum on Fiction, Spring 2003 Berry, Robert. "Gothicism in Conrad and Dostoevsky." How Conrad and Dostoevsky combined disparate fictional genres and traditions in their work, particularly the Gothic tradition. "Though the critical establishment has long since labelled both artists as psychological, even political novelists, Conrad and Dostoevsky are also authors of what is usually called 'popular' fiction. Under this broad, notoriously problematic heading, are included such independent genres as 'adventure, thriller and detective writing'; 'romance' literature; and Gothic fiction.' Each of these literary forms, I would argue, can be claimed to exist in Conrad and Dostoevsky's complex fictional worlds." Deep South v.1 n.2 (May, 1995)

Joseph Conrad's Dark 'Victory'
By JONATHAN YARDLEY Monday, May 9, 2005; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. The extraordinary and uncommonly influential literary career of Joseph Conrad began in 1895, when he was 38 years old, with the publication of his first novel, "Almayer's Folly." It continued beyond his death in 1924 as his letters, essays and various other papers were published posthumously, but it really ended in 1915, with the publication of "Victory." Many books followed, but none came close to the high standard it set, and indeed for many years critics argued that "Victory" itself fell short of Conrad's finest work.
Joseph Conrad was a Polish sailor who became one of England's greatest prose stylists.

The novel Heart of Darkness is largely based on first-hand experiences that Joseph Conrad acquired while journeying up the Congo River during a six month voyage in 1890. The captain died during that voyage and Conrad took command of the steamboat. Heart of Darkness details the journey of Charles Marlow as he captains a ferry-boat transporting ivory downriver and develops an intense interest in Kurtz, an ivory-procurement agent stationed in the territory. Heart of Darkness is a great classic of English literature and is yet another must-read from the library at American Literature. Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent
Set-text notes compiled by Stephen Hamblin Contents : Introduction These notes are for Joseph Conrad's novel, The Secret Agent. I compiled them during my senior year of high school and decided to make them available on the web for all those who could use a little help with the book. I never actually read the novel, though I did take advantage of a variety of resources from the internet, the school library, and I got some help from a few good friends. So, by no means are these notes complete, though they should help the average student. If you have any comments or suggestions, or just find my site to be helpful, please drop me a note at steveh@ductape.net thanks. Title : The Secret Agent Genre : Novel Author : Joseph Conrad Date of Publication : Period of Literary History : Twentieth Century Major Characters : Mr. Verloc , lazy and vulgar, is assigned to spy on any possible anarchists while posing as a small business owner and operator. He is instructed to bomb GreenWich Observatory by his superiors, although he believes such action to be irration al and radical enough to spark an anti-anarchist campaign by the London police. He is eventually murdered by his wife for using her brother as a pawn in his mission, and is responsible for his death. Winnie Verloc , the wife of Mr. Verloc, married primarily to provide for the needs of her brother Stevie, whom she loves very much. After learning of her husbands contrivances dealing with her imbecilic brother, she kills Mr. Verloc and attempts to flee to the Continent, only to be deserted by her companion. After being deserted, she jumps from the steamer while in route to Calais and dies.
