http://www.boydell.co.uk/jconradmain.htm

Joseph Conrad is not only one of the great writers of English – and world - literature, but was also a writer who lived a particularly full and interesting life. For the biographer this is a double-edged sword, however, as there are many periods for which documentation can be uncommonly difficult.
Zdzislaw Najder's command of English, French, Polish, and Russian has allowed him greater access to the huge range of Conrad sources than any other biographer, and his Polish background and his own experience as an exile have afforded him a unique affinity for Conrad and his milieu. When this meticulously documented biography first appeared in English in 1983, it won high praise as the best, most complete biography of Conrad.
T his new, extensively revised edition presents a wealth of new material from recently-opened former eastern-bloc archives. There is new material on Conrad's father's genealogy and his role in Polish politics; Conrad's service in the French and British merchant marines; his early English reading and correspondence; his experiences in the Congo; the circumstances of writing his memoirs, and much more. In addition, several aspects of Conrad's life and works are more thoroughly analyzed: his problems with the English language; his borrowings from French writers; his attitude toward socialism, his reaction to the reception of his books.

Joseph Conrad Hello, and welcome to my website. My name is Joseph Conrad and I have been building instruments since 1986. I studied with Dr. Carleen Hutchins, who brought to me her large volume of knowledge and understanding of instrument making and sound production. In the building of my instruments, I try to marry the best of modern techniques to the tradition of Italian craftsmanship, producing instruments that have an outstanding sound. I build violins generally of two patterns, Stradivari and Guarneri . These patterns seem to have the most predictable results. I also build instruments on commission as well as other patterns. The wood that I select for my violins is from 70-100 years old and has exceptional tonal qualities as well as being visually beautiful. My violas range in sizes from 16 3/8 inches down to 15 1/2 inches and are a combination of designs. With some select old wood, the results have been well received on concert stages across the country. They are a nice combination of playability, power and tone. My cellos are built from three patterns a Montagnana , a Gofriller and a small Stradivari pattern. These seem to yield the best of both worlds, in power and tone. I have been lucky that some fine old wood has been made available to me to build these instruments, and they have been well received.

Joseph Conrad Scholarships 18 years of The British Chevening Scholarship Programme in Poland Chevening – the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s flagship scholarship scheme is
now coming to an end in Poland. The final group of 14 scholars selected during the last recruitment process will begin studying at UK Higher Education Institutions in October this year. NOTE: CHEVENING HANSARD Society Scholars Programme is still available! Chevening is a prestigious scholarship scheme funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Scholarships are offered in over 150 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and gain skills which will benefit their countries. The Chevening programme currently provides around 2,300 new scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at UK Institutions of Higher Education. In Poland, Chevening scholarships were awarded for the first time in 1989. Since then over 240 Polish high-fliers have been given the chance to study at the best academic institutions in the UK. On their return to Poland, they actively engaged in the ambitious process of post-Communist transformation, putting the skills they gained in the UK into practice and contributing to Poland’s economic and political development. Former Chevening scholars include many prominent figures from politics, science, business and the media. As well as the main Chevening programme, there were several thematic scholarships co-sponsored by the private sector.

Joseph Conrad
Joseph Conrad, born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowki in 1857, is widely considered one of the masters of English prose. English was his third language (after Polish and German), yet he was able to write such monumental works as "Lord Jim" (1900) and "Heart of Darkness" (1902) in it.
The son of a Polish noble, Conrad was orphaned at age 12. At 16, he convinced his uncle to let him pursue his desire for a life at sea and moved to Marseilles, where he served with French merchant ships. In 1878, he landed a job with a British vessel and arrived in England for the first time. Eight years later, he became a naturalized British citizen. He continued working with the British merchant navy until 1889, when he traveled to the Congo to become captain of a river steamboat.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
Selections Annotated and Explained

Russell McNeil, PhD
Editor, Malaspina Great Books
In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)
