Joseph Conrad (born J³zef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski 3 December 3 August ) was a Polish -born English novelist . He is regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, which is even more notable because he did not learn to speak English well until he was in his 20s (albeit always with a Polish accent). Conrad is recognized as a master prose stylist. Some of his works have a strain of romanticism , but more importantly he is recognized as an important forerunner of modernist literature . His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many writers, including Ernest Hemingway D. H. Lawrence Graham Greene William S. Burroughs ... John Maxwell Coetzee as well as Jerzy Kosiński citation needed and inspired such films as Apocalypse Now (drawn from Conrad's Heart of Darkness Writing during the apex of the British Empire , Conrad drew upon his experiences in first the French and later the British Merchant Navy to create novels and short stories that reflected aspects of a world-wide empire while also plumbing the depths of the human soul.

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer, a dreamer, adventurer, and gentleman. In his famous preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' (1897) Conrad crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel it is, above all, to make you see. That and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's best-known works are LORD JIM (1900) and HEART OF DARKNESS (1902). Conrad discouraged interpretation of his sea novels through evidence from his life, but several of his stories drew the material, events, and personalities from his own experiences in different parts of the world. While making his first voyages to the West Indies, Conrad met the Corsican Dominic Cervoni, who was later model for his characters filled with a thirst for adventure. "We live, as we dream

Biography of Joseph Conrad (1857-1924)
Joseph Conrad Joseph Conrad grew up in the Polish Ukraine, a large, fertile plain between Poland and Russia. It was a divided nation, with four languages, four religions, and a number of different social classes. A fraction of the Polish-speaking inhabitants, including Conrad's family, belonged to the szlachta , a hereditary class in the aristocracy on the social hierarchy, combining qualities of gentry and nobility. They had political power, despite their impoverished state. Conrad's father, Apollo Korzeniowski, studied for six years at St. Petersburg University, which he left before earning a degree. Conrad's mother, Eva Bobrowska, was thirteen years younger than Apollo and the only surviving daughter in a family of six sons. After she met him in 1847, Eva was drawn to Apollo's poetic temperament and passionate patriotism, while he admired her lively imagination. Although Eva's family disapproved of the courtship, the two were married in 1856. Instead of devoting himself to the management of his wife's agricultural estates, Apollo pursued literary and political activities, which brought in little money. He wrote a variety of plays and social satires. Although his works were little known, they would have tremendous influence on his son.

was born in Berdichev, in the Ukraine, in a region that had once been a part of Poland but was then under Russian rule. His father Apollo Korzeniowski was an aristocrat without lands, a poet and translator of English and French literature. The family estates had been sequestrated in 1839 following an anti-Russian rebellion. As a boy the young Joseph read Polish and French versions of English novels with his father. When Apollo Korzeniowski became embroiled in political activities, he was sent to exile with his family to Volgoda, northern Russia, in 1861. After being wounded in a duel or of a self-inflicted gunshot in the chest, Conrad continued his career at the seas for 16 years in the British merchant navy. He had been deeply in debt, but his uncle discharged his debts. This was a turning point in his life. Conrad rose through the ranks from common seaman to first mate, and by 1886 he obtained his master mariner's certificate, commanding his own ship, Otago . In the same year he was given British citizenship and he changed officially his name to Joseph Conrad. Witnessing the forces of the sea, Conrad developed a deterministic view of the world, which he expressed in a letter in 1897: "What makes mankind tragic is not that they are the victims of nature, it is that they are conscious of it. To be part of the animal kingdom under the conditions of this earth is very well - but soon as you know of your slavery, the pain, the anger, the strife . the tragedy begins."

The Year of Joseph Conrad has Begun! Festivities at Warsaw's Royal Castle started off the "Year of Joseph Conrad" in Poland, led by honorary master of ceremonies President Lech Kaczynski. The Polish author of such classics as Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim was born exactly 150 years ago, on 3 December 1857. The anniversary of Conrad's birth has even managed to make it into UNESCO's calendar.
Though Conrad wrote in English and is generally classified under British literature, the writer was born Teodor Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski in Berdyczow, Poland (now Berdychiv, Ukraine), and lived both in Krakow and Warsaw , including in the house at 47 Nowy Swiat pictured below.
Conrad's roots are distinctly Polish: he was born to a Polish noble family, and a highly patriotic one at that; so much so that his father, a patriotic writer and translator, participated in organizing the January Uprising of 1863-64, an act for which he was arrested for in 1861 by the Russian authorities. His parents were sent to Siberia, where his mother died and his father became ill, eventually dying in Krakow and leaving young Joseph an orphan at age eleven.
After living under the care of his uncle in Krakow for several years, Joseph decided to pursue a life at sea. Party to escape conscription into the Tsarist army, partly to satisfy his adventurous personality, Conrad left for France at age 16 and became a seaman. His voyages would soon take him all over the world, and would become the settings for many of his stories. Ever the adventurer, he was even involved with gunrunning and smuggling for a time and acquired a gambling debt that almost ended his life. After he lost his position with the French merchants, he began to sail with the British Merchant Marine.

Joseph Conrad: The Sense of Self
Joseph Conrad's stories The Secret Sharer Heart of Darkness , and The Shadow Line share a number of themes. All three stories deal with a process of maturing that involves the loss of youthful illusions, a process usually precipitated by an actual "trial" that challenges the protagonist's professional skills as well as his assumptions about his identity and sanity. In successfully dealing with the crisis, the protagonist reconstructs his identity and develops moral ideas rooted in acknowledgement of his own and others' human weaknesses and thus of men's necessary interdependence. Each story is related from the point-of-view of one narrator: Marlow in Heart of Darkness and an unnamed captain in his first command in both The Secret Sharer and The Shadow Line . All exhibit a naive or idealized view of the world. Marlow chooses to go to the Congo because, since a boy, that part of Africa had always "charmed him." When the narrator of The Shadow Line unexpectedly wins the command of a ship as a replacement for a newly deceased captain, he looks forward to going "out to sea. The sea-which was pure, safe and friendly" (96). Likewise, the narrator of The Secret Sharer prematurely delights in "the great security of the sea" (23).

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) , Polish-born English author and master mariner wrote Heart of Darkness “. . . No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one’s existence—that which makes its truth, its meaning—its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream—alone. . . .” (Part 1) With haunting verse Conrad has crafted a chilling tale laden with lush imagery and symbolism describing the ambiguity between good and evil. “He was obeyed, yet he inspired neither love nor fear, nor even respect. He inspired uneasiness. That was it!” —(ibid) With characters as anti-hero he examines man’s moral complexities and capacity for corruption and evil, and the dark depths of the human psyche; Anything approaching the change that came over his features I have never seen before, and hope never to see again. Oh, I wasn’t touched. I was fascinated. It was as though a veil had been rent. I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror—of an intense and hopeless despair. Did he live his life again in every detail of desire, temptation, and surrender during that supreme moment of complete knowledge? He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision—he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath. (ibid, Part 3)

I. FAMILY BACKGROUND AND EARLY YEARS
Joseph Conrad was born as son of Apollo Korzeniowski and Ewa nee Bobrowska, in Berdyczow (now Berdychiv, Ukraine) on 3 December 1857. Both parents were Polish, members of the local szlachta, landowning gentry-nobility (there was no legal distinction between these two classes in Poland); both were devout Roman Catholics. Until the partition of Poland between Russia, Austria-Hungary and Prussia at the end of the 18th century, Central and Western Ukraine constituted a part of the multinational Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; most of the szlachta were ethnic Poles; most of town-dwellers were Jewish; most of the peasantry Ukrainians ("Ruthenians"). Conrad paternal and maternal ancestors settled there in late 17th century.
Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski (he was to use only his third given name), the only son of Apollo and Ewa, was born in Berdyczow (now Berdychiv) on 3 December 1857.
