Colum was born Padraic Columb in a County Longford workhouse, where his father worked. He was the first of eight children. When the father lost his job in 1889, he moved to the United States to participate in the Colorado gold rush . Padraic and his mother and siblings remained in Ireland. When the father returned in 1892, the family moved to Glasthule , outside Dublin where his father was employed as Assistant Manager at Sandycove and Glasthule railway station . His son attended the local national school When Colum's mother died in 1897, the family were temporarily split up. Padraic and one brother remained in Dublin while the father and remaining children moved back to Longford. Colum finished school the following year and at the age of seventeen, he passed an exam for and was awarded a clerkship in the Irish Railway Clearing House . He stayed in this job until 1903. During this period, Colum started to write and met a number of the leading Irish writers of the time, including

Colum was born in Longford, where his father was workhouse master, on 8 December 1881. At seventeen he became a clerk in the Irish Railway Clearing House in Dublin, but left in 1904 determined to make a living through writing. His first poems appeared in The United Irishman , edited by Arthur Griffith. The Saxon Shillin' (1902) won a competition for a play to discourage young Irishmen from joining the British army. Colum acted with the new Irish National Theatre Society, but after his play Broken Soil was staged in 1903, he concentrated on writing. He was one of the founders of the Abbey Theatre, where his realistic peasant drama The Land (1905) was an early success. Thomas Muskerry (1910) was also staged by the Abbey, but thereafter Colum failed to fulfil his early promise as a dramatist. His first book of verse

Padraic Colum
Padraic Colum, one of the best known poets of the Irish Literary Revival throughout his long life faithfully recorded the landscape and colourful idiom of his native place. Colum was a respected man of letters, honoured by many Universities, who continued to bring the art of poetry to American students while he himself was then eighty years of age. Some of his better known poems include 'She moved through the fair', 'The Old Woman of the Roads' and 'The Drover' which begins with the following lines: 'From Meath of the pastures, to wet hills by sea, through Leitrim and Longford, go my cattle and me.' Colum has written plays, children's' lore and mythology, and biographies of his fried James Joyce and of the Irish patriot Arthur Griffith. 'She moved through the the fair' first popularized by the famous Irish John Count McCormack, has now become one of the best loved Irish lyrics. Padraic Colum was born in Longford Workhouse in 1881, where his father was Master. The family were abandoned by his father who left for the goldfields of Colorado, and Padraic was reared in North Longford where he became familiar with Granard, Colmcille, Bunlahy and Molly, place names which later occur in his literary output. In the final years of his life Colum stated 'I have always tried to use the speech of the people of Longford in my work', - the idiom he had learned at the poultry fairs in north Longford which he visited during his youth. He was born in Longford and spent his early years among the country people of the Irish midlands, who furnished the subjects, characters, themes, and language for his work. Although Colum spent most of his adult life in the United States, his writing returned to his Longford roots over and over again. When Colum was in his teens, his family moved to Dublin. Irish writer George Russell (who went by the pseudonym AE ) read his first poems and pronounced him a genius. He included some of Colum's poetry in the collection
